DEAR READER

We plan, focus and think with an eye into the future and with the objective for continuous ad-vancement. For Gruner, future development means, gaining an even better understanding of customers' needs and achieving their goals by individual and optimized solutions that combine design expertise with a precise and holistic approach of engineering. Every day, we set our-selves the goal of exceeding customers' requirements through a combination of expertise, soft skills and commitment. We constantly strive to view our activities and results through the eyes of our customers.

Challenging projects, highly motivated personalities and diverse development opportunities – this is what sets the Gruner Group apart. The over 1,000 highly qualified employees at Gruner enjoy the full trust of public- and private-sector clients in tackling ever more challenging projects in an increasingly complex national and international market environment.

This trust is highly appreciated and is an added motivation. The consistent focus of our services on customer needs will therefore remain the key driver of our success in 2016. At the same time, we will keep an eye on business trends and technological developments.

Change and stability are not a contradiction in termsThe strong Swiss franc has created a difficult international economic environment for Swiss service companies. However, we are confident for the current year. Switzerland's state-of-the-art infrastructure of well-maintained building and civil engineering structures constitutes a tre-mendous locational advantage. A reliable and sustainable energy supply network, underpinned by renewable energy sources, is every bit as essential as a stable political and economic frame-work. We are convinced that the efforts made by the world community will reduce carbon emissions and once again increase the significance of hydropower worldwide.

As the various projects featured in this annual publication illustrate, the trend towards multidis-ciplinary single-source solutions is stronger than ever. Accordingly, we will continue to invest in the recruitment of talents and specialists to strengthen Gruner's regional locations in Switzer-land and our international presence.

With all this in mind, we look forward to an enterprising, congenial and successful collaboration with our customers and partners in 2016.

A VISION BECOMESREALITY

GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL

GRUNER GROUP 2016 7

The first blasting operations at the Gotthard on November 4, 1999,

marked the start of construction for the world's longest rail tunnel.

After several years of preparatory works, the tunnel driving work

for the approx. 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel started at the

southern end in summer 2001 and at the northern end in sum-

mer 2003. The official opening ceremony will be on June 1,

2016.

The tunnel is the heart of the New Railway Link

through the Alps (NRLA) which is being operated

as a flat route. It will shorten the journey time for

passengers on the north-south axis by around

one hour. The new route will also substantially

boost the efficiency of freight traffic and, by

shifting cargo from road to rail, will make a

lasting contribution to the protection of the

Alps.

We are proud ...

... that the first visions and plans for this project

were drafted by former Gruner Group owner

Eduard Gruner 70 years ago.

... that, as industry trailblazers and upholders of the Swiss

pioneering spirit, our engineers and experts have applied their

knowledge and experience in helping to realize this once-in-a-life-

time project.

… that, as a member of the Gotthard Base Tunnel North engineer-

ing consortium, the Gruner Group played a key role from 1994

onwards in the design and construction of the Erstfeld and Amsteg

tunnel sections. The company designed and supervised works

accounting for an investment volume of around CHF 1.3 billion.

ENERGY

We must not let ourselves be "blinded" by solar technology or "blown away" by wind energy. A location-optimized elec-tricity mix featuring a variety of renewable energies, power storage and current control, plus energy-efficient use through optimized building technology are key to a reliable, long-term, eco-friendly energy supply.

SYMBIOSIS OF THE ELEMENTSThe first units of the new 1,000 MW Lim-mern pumped-storage hydropower plant in the Canton of Glarus were connected to the grid just before year-end. The (900 MW) Nant-de-Drance and (240 MW, FMHL+) Veytaux power stations are due to follow in the com-ing years. Stucky Ltd is playing a leading role in the planning and construction of all these plants.

As things stand, however, these billion-franc investments are being made in a difficult eco-nomic climate. This is due to the historically low oil prices and energy surplus in Europe, which are denting the prospects for hydro-power schemes. Yet the need for pumped-stor-

age hydropower plants to store electrical en-ergy and regulate our power grids remains undisputed and these facilities' importance is certain to grow. It is thus only a matter of time before further investments follow.

Outside of Switzerland, hydropower is experi-encing a strong resurgence in a number of regions. Stucky has been mandated to reha-bilitate and upgrade existing plants in south-ern Africa and central Asia. In Georgia, in-tense efforts are being made to harness the enormous hydropower potential along the Caucasian mountain range. Thanks to our long-standing presence in Georgia and the Stucky Caucasus branch in Tbilisi, founded in 2008, we have been involved in this develop-

ment from the very start. We are currently working on numerous projects at all stages, from feasibility study to site supervision. In Southeast Asia too, hydropower has become the key renewable energy source due to the favorable topographical and hydrological fac-tors. From our Stucky Asia branch in Bangkok, we are overseeing projects in China, Myan-mar, Malaysia and the Philippines.

GEOTHERMAL POWER: SYSTEMS INTEGRATING A WIDE RANGE OF SKILLSThe Gruner Group has many years of experi-ence in the design, modeling and installation of shallow and deep geothermal systems, in-cluding district heating.

Building technology as a key factor in the energy efficiency of buildings has evolved rapidly in recent years. The focus is on resource-efficient energy production and distribution and the minimization of con-sumption. This requires networked systems that can communicate with each other and interact intelligently to changing demands. Our innovative, integral solutions support this development, without in any way com-promising the essential features of sustain-able systems, such as simplicity and com-prehensibility.

SEIZING DIGITAL OPPORTUNITIESTo meet the ever more needs and objectives of clients and users, we take full advantage of the opportunities offered by recent advances in digital technology. With digitization now an essential element of integral building servic-es engineering, we use special algorithms to check digital drawings and documents for conflicts and accordance with the applicable data. The trend is moving away from simple drawing methods to model-oriented design and engineering. Based on the analysis of user profiles and physical properties the Building Climate Control department calcu-lates energy and costs. These forecasts then serve as a basis for integral optimization.

SUSTAINABLE AND ECONOMICALOn one hand there is the growing complexity of building technology with the additional ex-penditures for design and investments, while on the other hand there is an increased effi-ciency and diverse savings in property main-tenance and management. Innovative solu-tions stand out, because they pay back over

the entire building lifecycle. Particularly fu-ture-oriented solutions include new refrigerants such as propane, as a substitute for harmful Freon formulations, as well as CO2 heat pumps, which use CO2 within a hermetically sealed sys-tem – a technology that is being used in the new Grosspeter Tower in Basel. Progress has also been made in the interaction of building technology with timber structures. To meet the high aesthetic demands for the Swatch building in Biel/Bienne, a 3D system was used for the detailed design and development work. The outstanding architecture with the sophisticated building technology gained broad recognition.

The approach adopted for the safe use of geo- thermal energy is dictated by technical com-plexity, the high regulatory hurdles to approval, and the demands of human and environmental protection. Projects involving historic buildings and settings require great sensitivity, backed up by in-depth experience. Gruner delivers crea-tive, interdisciplinary solutions to meet contem-porary safety, fire protection and energy use requirements.

THE FOCUS ARE THE PEOPLEAll construction projects revolve around people: the clients, who award contracts in order to achieve specific goals; the users, whose needs have to be met; and the plan-ning team, who seeks to perform their allot-ted tasks with the utmost care, responsibil-ity and expertise. The better the collaboration between client, designers and the other project parties, the greater the all-important information transparency within the team.

For the Meret Oppenheim high-rise project in Basel, Gruner was tasked with reducing the overall costs and developing optimiza-tions. Intensive teamwork yielded a solution that cut the total cost by simplifying both the building technology and structural de-sign of the building.

Our projects are unique in which a precise definition of user and process requirements provides the basis for creating the optimum solution.

With its many years of experience, the General Planning Division regards itself as a center of excellence for the execution of general planning mandates. We view design and construction pro-cesses as an integral whole in which the main focus is on meeting targets, optimizing interfaces and achieving milestones.

WE ASSUMEOVERALL RESPONSIBILITYNew technological innovations and increas-ingly complex construction processes pre-sent a growing challenge for clients and in-vestors. What is the key to a successful con- struction project? Meeting deadlines and cost targets while delivering the best possible quality. And how are these goals achieved? The best answer is to cooperate with an inter-disciplinary design team with a firm grip on interfaces and design processes. What bene-fits can Gruner offer its customers in this re-spect? We provide our clients with a one-stop solution for all the necessary planning servic-es, including project management and overall responsibility.

It is our job to assemble the required expertise for the project and ensure successful project development and completion. Our in-house access to all the necessary specialists, who are readily available for consultation at short notice, offers unbeatable advantages.

This year too, our wide-ranging competencies are well illustrated by our current project port-folio. Our daily work includes new-build and refurbishment projects for residential build-ings, indoor parking lots, office and laboratory facilities, public buildings such as schools, gymnasiums and hospitals; refurbishment of historic buildings; projects requiring compli-ance with various Minergie (energy efficien-cy) standards; projects involving the use of BIM method.

ALL PROJECTS AND STAGES, ALWAYSWITH AN EYE FOR THE BIG PICTUREBuilding investments always have an eye to the future and require a high degree of trust by the client in design and construction process. In our role as independent general planner, we always act in the interests of our clients and ensure that needs and goals are successfully met. These are not always apparent at the start of the project. One of our strengths is our abil-ity to create a project framework conducive to success and to develop it to maturity in part-nership with the client. We provide consulting from inception and concept formulation through design development to project completion and offer the necessary planning and man-

agement services for all project phases. Yet we never lose sight of our customers. Smooth collaboration is a priority and we make every effort to understand their wishes, meet their needs and exceed their expectations.

We lead our clients through the jungle of build-ing regulations, standards and laws, from the initial project idea to successful completion. An essential part of our responsibility, as we see it, is to ensure that the customer always has a clear picture of the individual project phases and understands current project devel-opments. The success of the customer's pro-ject is the bar we set for ourselves.

HIGH COMPLEXITY AS A CENTRAL CHALLENGEWhat factors are increasing the complexity of infrastructure engineering? It is not only a matter of predicting mobility needs, demo-graphic trends or future developments in freight transportation. The complexity derives primarily from the interactions between the various decision-makers and design team members, coordination of the individual trades, sensitive treatment of urban and spa-tial planning issues, stakeholder involvement, attention to nature and biodiversity, efficient use of resources, measures needed for diffi-cult ground conditions and many other fac-tors. The above list is anything but exhaustive. Ultimately, complexity results from the joint endeavor to develop future-oriented sustain- able solutions.

PROFESSIONAL PROJECT MANAGE-MENT IS THE SOLUTIONWhatever the project, it is always the human factor that determines success. Having direct access to all the necessary experts, the Gruner Group can promptly deliver the best solution. To streamline and optimize the deci-sion-making process, our project managers need far more than just technical expertise: their knowledge is backed up by social skills and a professional project management frame- work, as a solid foundation for achieving best results.

TAILORED TO THE SITUATIONThe Gruner Group excels by its ability to tack-le practically any type of project on any scale. Our daily routine is shaped by ever-new chal-lenges, to which we deliver reliable, custom-ized solutions in close partnership with our clients. Typical examples include the revitali-zation of the River Wiese (Canton of Basel- Stadt Public Works Dept.), a preliminary study for the Laufen power station (Cooperative Elektra Birseck, Münchenstein, and Gesell- schaft Kleinkraftwerk Birseck AG), the new-build Lätten bridge over the Steinhausen–Knonau railway line (Zug Public Works Dept.), and the capacity expansion of the Wilfeld roundabout in Wil.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN

STRONG IN ALL DISCIPLINES

Structural design, as a discipline, has changed radically in recent years. Present-day applications have long stretched laptops' capacities, and 3D modeling is now pushing servers to their limits. The clouds used for building information modeling (BIM) quite literally open up new perspectives.

Page 17: GRUNER GROUP 2016 CUSTOMER DRIVEN FUTURE · PDF file2016 Gruner Group Annual Publication ... Editor Marketing, Communications, Gruner Ltd Design Marketing, Communications ... GRUNER

GRUNER GROUP 2016 17

HARNESSING SYNERGIES FOR ALTER-ATIONS AND REFURBISHMENTSAlteration, modernization and conversion projects require considerable engineering ex-perience and a holistic approach: they involve an assessment of loadbearing structures from various historical periods, analysis of fail-ure patterns and identification of the options. An early check on structural earthquake re-sistance may result in substantial synergies and significantly cut the cost of seismic up-grading. Drawing on their profound expertise in earthquake engineering and seismology, Gruner's specialists work with architects and clients to define and cost the appropriate seismic retrofitting strategies and priorities.

SUSTAINABLE AND AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF TECHNOLOGYForward-thinking, resource-efficient ap-proaches are more important now than ever before. This explains the high priority given by Gruner to responsible engineering services that bring long-term benefits. The rediscovery of wood as a future-oriented material is a

case in point: optimized assemblies incorpo-rating newly developed connecting tech-niques offer the double advantage of durabili-ty and sustainability. The low weight and particularities of the material allow the design of wide-spanning structures of any desired shape or cross-section that combine function-al efficiency with immense aesthetic appeal.

ALSO SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONALLYDespite the difficult market environment, Gruner's expertise, quality and on-time deliv-ery are in international demand. As a reliable partner for industrial construction projects, we were responsible for the expansion of the Dubal aluminum plant in Dubai. For the ce-ment sector, we designed the cement-grinding plants, packaging system and cement silos for the factory at El Beida in Algeria. In Saudi Ara-bia, the Bisha cement plant was successfully handed over to the customer and work has now started on the Rabigh plant on the west coast.

OPTIMIZED COST-BENEFIT RATIO ON MAJOR PROJECTSToday, hospitals, industrial plants, administra-tive facilities, residential complexes and high- rises have to be built within a very short time. Fast construction depends on efficient plan-ning and smart designs with optimized load-bearing structures. Start-to-finish structural modeling in 3D and, increasingly, Building In-formation Modeling (BIM) applications are key elements in our design toolkit. Seasoned teams of structural and design engineers are already successfully using these methods and constantly extending their scope of appli-cation.

Interesting options for steelwork are provided by structural fire engineering: the economical calculation of structural frames and steel components for realistic fire events makes it possible to optimize element thicknesses and geometries, and substantially downsize fire encasements for steel structures. This bene-fits customers by delivering high cost-benefit ratio and shorter construction times.

TUNNEL VENTILATION ANDAERODYNAMICS – CLOSELY ENTWINED WITH FIRE SAFETYAt present, the most widely discussed project in Switzerland is the second tube of the Gotthard road tunnel. Here, we are pre-paring expert reports on the ventilation sys-tem and various constructional issues. Nota-ble project optimizations identified by the tunnel ventilation team relate to safety, availa-bility and cost. The results are being further analyzed in collaboration with the Civil Engi-neering department and consortium partner Gähler+Partner prior to submission to the decision-making bodies.

We have recently united our various CFD (computational fluid dynamics) specialists in a single team in the Fire Safety, Engineering Methods department. The team also models aerodynamic processes in tunnels. This has reinforced the links between our tunnel venti-lation and fire safety operations. Partnered by the University of Göttingen, this Aerodynam-ics/CFD team is currently developing a techni-cally complex smoke propagation simulation for Munich's subway system. The results, to be validated by on-site measurements, will serve as the basis for assessing and, where appropriate, optimizing the ventilation sys-tem.

VIBRATION CONTROL FOR NEW STRUCTURESVibration control is becoming an increasingly important service on new-build sites due to their frequent proximity to vibration-inducing transport systems such as railroads. The structure-borne sound emissions resulting from these vibrations are a further source of disturbance. Suitable measures can be de-fined and optimized as early as the design stage by measuring and calculating excitation and the transmission function between vibra-tion source and new structure. Such mea- sures may include isolation trenches, soft wall insulation or building mounts. Post-instal-lation measurements can be taken to verify performance and collect feedback.

EUROPAALLEE – SAFETY FOR A NEW DISTRICT OF ZURICHA new city quarter – Europaallee – is currently taking shape in the center of Zurich, next to the central station. The phased development, spanning a series of plots, will create a con-temporary urban environment with wide-rang-ing facilities: 400 apartments, 160 hotel beds and over 6,000 workplaces in the hotel, cater-ing, retail, leisure and education sectors. Gruner Ltd is responsible for fire safety plan-ning and supervising the professional imple-mentation of fire safety measures at six of the projected high-rise complexes, four of which have already been successfully opened.

The focus of the Environment department at the moment is on environmental impact as-sessments, e.g. for the exceedingly complex and challenging Liestal bypass project, and construction noise concepts under Swiss building noise guidelines. The environmental site supervision team is currently working on longer-term mandates such as the Belchen tunnel rehabilitation (N2 freeway) and the Ep-penberg rail tunnel. The contamination man-agement team is dealing with a number of polluted sites owned by the Canton of Zurich and various mandates relating to building con-taminants.

Following the enlargement of our Zurich staff at the start of 2016, the four-strong team at this site can now offer a full range of environ-mental services. Our customers also benefit from the direct interdisciplinary collaboration with Gruner Wepf AG. With sustainability is-sues set to grow in importance in the field of infrastructure, the Gruner Group's experience in these disciplines will stand it in good stead in the future.

SAFETY – OF PUBLIC INTEREST, FOR PERSONAL WELL-BEINGThe growing interest in public and private safety among the wider population is fueling the demand for the services of Gruner's high-ly regarded specialists. We provide sound and practical advice on a wide range of issues – from the reorganization of fire services in the Canton of Schaffhausen to safety in Swiss football. In 2016, as in previous years, numer-ous companies and authorities are relying on our expertise – in both Switzerland and the rest of Europe. We use leading-edge technol-ogy such as drones for surveillance during major events, for large-scale exercises or drills, and for infrastructure surveys.

Our continuing education programs help both rank-and-file employees to negotiate their career path and executives to master their demanding tasks.

COMMUNICATION AS KEY FACTORA department head has a different range of tasks from a project manager. Leadership and a close dialog with customers are very impor-tant for coping with projects and assignments. I am now better equipped to hold discussions with customers, meet their requirements and provide the best possible support in order to steer projects in a positive direction. The cours-es I have attended in overall project manage-ment and communication have given me

some useful tools for project management as well as for staff and team leadership.

Continuing education programs not only im-prove your technical expertise, they also pro-mote solution-driven thinking, support internal and external team-building, and encourage process-oriented action. They ensure that you do a job only once, at the right time. I have also been shown a number of useful ways of mas-tering large-scale tasks on major projects.

22 GRUNER GROUP 2016

"ONE OF THE MANY CHALLENGES IN THIS JOB IS THAT YOU ARE NEVER FULLY TRAINED.

MY AIM IS NEVER TO STAND STILL, BUT TO CARRY ON LEARNING NEW THINGS – TO IMPROVE STEADILY FROM YEAR TO YEAR."

CONTINUING EDUCATION

OPENING UP PERSPECTIVESFOR A BETTER FUTURE

Corporate strategies always depend on fit-for-the-future solutions that benefit both the company and its customers. Staff development policies that give equal priority to executives and young talent are a key element here. Technical training is just one aspect: just as important are strengthening per-sonal and professional development, leadership qualities, communication skills and process orientation.

The Gruner Group currently employs around 100 executives at department head level, who bear responsibility for the economic success of the relevant department or branch. As the backbone of operational management, they require skills in a variety of areas, e.g. staff leadership, project monitoring, business devel-opment and, naturally enough, project man-agement.

Executive developmentIn response to this situation, the Gruner Group is intensifying its efforts to offer system-based support and training for this employee group in

2016. The continuing education provided through a custom-developed department head training program focusing on business admin-istration issues and leadership, and through the executive development program for "young" managers will be complemented by a depart-ment head cockpit.

These measures are designed both to nurture entrepreneurial skills and to facilitate access to key control information. In future, through addi-tional use of the existing project manager cock-pit, department heads will have access to infor-mation at project level as well as having an

overview of the key personal, financial and business process data for their area of respon-sibility.

Through these training and system-based sup-port initiatives, the Gruner Group seeks to improve the quality of leadership in the compa-ny. These measures will also add momentum to our 2016 drive towards greater customer and future orientation.

GRUNER GROUP 2016 23

Matthias DossElectrical Engineer (TU)CEO Gruner Kiwi AG

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVEL-OPMENT IN LINE WITH NEEDSThe original plan in 2013, when I joined Gruner Kiwi AG from IBM Schweiz AG as a data center design specialist, was for me to be-come Data Center department head after 2–3 years. Yet as early as August 2014, after initial-ly assisting the electrical engineering depart-ment on major projects, I was appointed Ex-ecutive Board Member with responsibility for business development. In familiarizing myself with my new duties, I was also supported by colleagues from other Group companies.

In the wake of a reshuffle at Gruner Kiwi AG in early 2015, I was asked whether I was ready and able to assume the role of CEO. After thinking things over for a few days, I decided to accept this momentous challenge and took up the position. My duties were completely

transformed, as it were, overnight. Whereas, previously, I had mainly dealt with project-spe-cific issues, I was now confronted by the full range of tasks that a managing director has to deal with. These range from the seeming triv-ialities of everyday business to far-reaching strategic decisions. Here too, I obviously re-ceived assistance, in particular from the Group Executive Committee. But my discus-sions with other Gruner Group executives at various events were also very valuable.

This year, I will attend a course at the Univer-sity of St. Gallen (HSG) in order to augment my practical experience with the requisite theoretical background for the tasks ahead. What pleases me most is the number of young colleagues who are also attending in-ternal and external courses.

"VOCATIONAL TRAINING DOES NOT END AFTER UNIVERSITY OR A TRAINEESHIP.

IT IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS THAT ACCOMPANIES YOUR CAREER. WITHOUT CONTINUING EDUCATION, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE

TO RESPOND TO CHANGES IN THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT."
