Level 1

Level 1 Growth Groups are designed for

those new to the Christian faith and for those long-time believers in Jesus Christ who feel they need to learn more about the basics of the Christian life. Level 1 Groups are also perfect for anyone who does not

know where to start in their walk with God, but simply know they do need to start somewhere. If you are new to First Hattiesburg or just new to Growth Groups, a level 1 group might be exactly what you

need.

Level 2

Level 2 Growth Groups continue to foster

spiritual growth through more focused studies. Where Level 1 Groups help start our journey with Christ, Level 2 groups keep us going in the right direction. Level 2 groups are for everyone, but they are especially

created for those ready to radically grow in their Christian faith. For any who feel like their faith needs a bigger push in the right direction, Level 2 Growth Groups challenge us to grow in our faith in Christ in new and

exciting ways.

Level 3

Level 3 Growth Groups exist for more

spiritual depth. Building on and going beyond Level 1 and 2 groups, our Level 3 groups seek to provide deeper knowledge of God, deeper love for God, deeper passion to serve God's people. Level 3’s are great for

those who want a more specific understanding of a theological topic, biblical book, or more practical issue related to living the Christian life.

What Are Growth Groups? At First Hattiesburg, we believe that spiritual growth happens best through intentional

relationships. In Growth Groups, people study the Bible together and discuss how it applies to our everyday lives. It’s also where we build friendships by praying for and caring for each other.

It would be virtually impossible for our staff, elders and deacons to personally minister to everyone who comes to our church. That’s why we have Growth Groups—so that our people can

effectively minister to each other.

SUN 9:30 A.M.Turning the Tide: Real Hope, Real ChangeEveryone / Level 2Sunday, 9:30 a.m.Church, Room 208Leader: Dale Beavers: [email protected]

There is a wave sweeping our nation with dire consequences that is changing the way we live in America. The only way the tide will turn is if we as Christian citizens take action. Insisting that we are not powerless and that we can make a difference, we will encourage each other to get down on our knees to pray, then get up on our feet and become involved. This call to action has never been more needed, and we’ll take a look at practical steps we can take to turn the tide by praying that God will make His presence known in our country.

SUN 9:30 A.M.After You Believe: Why Christian Character MattersMen / Level 2Sunday, 9:30 a.m.Church, Room 201Leader: Lanny Beach: [email protected]

We all wonder at some point — what is our purpose? As Christians, what are we to do with that ambiguous time between our salvation and our funeral? it’s easy to become preoccupied with who gets into heaven; the real challenge is how we are going to live in the here and now. We’ll see why Christian living is more than a checklist of do’s and don’ts, nor is it a prescription to “follow your heart” wherever it may lead. Instead, we’ll see the Bible’s call for a revolution — a transformation of character that takes us beyond our earthly pursuit of money, sex and power into a virtuous life that allows us to reflect God and live more worshipful, fulfilling lives.

SUN 9:30 A.M.I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an AtheistEveryone / Level 3Sunday, 9:30 a.m.Church, Room 203Leader: Mickey Lyon: [email protected]

Have you ever had to defend your Christian faith against skeptics? Have you ever wanted to learn more about the evidence that supports the truths of Christianity? Are you prepared to teach your children the evidence that supports Christianity? This group study will present the evidence that demonstrates, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Truth is absolute and knowable, that there is a Creator who created the entire universe out of nothing, that we have an accurate copy of the original bible documents, and that the New Testament writers told the truth about Jesus Christ. This study will strengthen your faith in Jesus as the Messiah, and enable you to fulfill the command in 1 Peter 3:15: “…always be prepared to give a reason to everyone who asks you for the hope that is in you.”

SUN 11:00 A.M.What Did You Expect?:Redeeming the Realities of MarriageYoung/Newly Married Couples—20’s/30’s / Level 2Sunday, 11:00 a.m.Church, Room 209Leaders: Bo and Kathryn Pennebaker: [email protected]

Marriage, according to Scripture, will always involve two flawed people living with each other in a fallen world. Yet, the majority of couples enter marriage with unrealistic expectations, leaving them unprepared for the day-to-day realities of married life. This study introduces a biblical and practical approach to those realities that is rooted in God’s faithfulness and Scripture’s teaching on sin and grace. We’ll explore six practical commitments that give shape and momentum to such a lifestyle. These commitments, which include honestly facing sin, weakness, and failure; willingness to change; and embodying Christ’s love, will equip couples to develop a thriving, grace-based marriage in all circumstances and seasons of their relationship.

Growing Kids God’s WayParents / Level 2Sunday, 11:00 a.m.Church, Room 205Leaders: James & Ruth Stockman: [email protected]

It’s not what you think that will impact your child; it’s what you communicate. What are you telling your kids? Are you telling them that their crises are trivial and their ideas are foolish? Probably not in so many words, but you may be communicating just that with your lack of interest in the day-to-day activities of your child. To keep your children on your team, you must assure them from the start that you are on theirs. See how we can instill Godly values in our kids through our parenting and give them a foundation of faith that will last them a lifetime.

SUN 11:00 A.M.Beautiful Outlaw: Experiencing the Playful, Disruptive, Extravagant Personality of Jesus20’s – 40’s / Level 2Sunday, 9:30 a.m.Church, Room 207Leaders: Jason & Emily Brown: [email protected]

Reading the Gospels without knowing the personality of Jesus is like watching television with the sound turned off. The result is a two dimensional person doing strange, undecipherable things. In this study, we’ll remove the religious varnish to help us discover stunning new insights into the humanity of Jesus. He was accused of breaking the law, keeping bad company, heavy drinking, and of being the devil himself. He was so dangerous that they had to kill him. But others loved him passionately. He had a sense of humor, his generosity was scandalous, and his anger made his enemies tremble. He’d say the most outrageous things! He was definitely not the Jesus of the stained glass. Join us to see Jesus as the Bible presents him, and let your life be shaped by His.

We are so often stuck in invisible struggles in our hearts and minds that we barely have space for God. SUN 5:00 P.M.Freedom Through ForgivenessEveryone / Level 2Sunday, 5:00 p.m.Church, Room 205Leader: Mike Devereaux: [email protected]

Forgiveness lies at the heart of the Christian faith with God forgiving us through Jesus for the sins we commit against Him. How does that impact the way that we are to offer forgiveness to those who wrong us? We’ll talk about forgiveness for people in our lives, people who have wronged us, our families and even ourselves. Learn how the Bible calls us to live as forgiven and forgivers.

Christian Beliefs: 20 Basics Every Christian Should KnowEveryone / Level 1Sunday, 5:00 p.m.Church, Room 203Leader: Reese Powell: [email protected]

God hasn’t called everyone to go to graduate school to learn what pastors know — but there are certain matters of belief that every Christian simply must know. Theology is important because what we believe affects how we live. If you’re a relatively new believer in Jesus, or if you’re a more mature Christian looking for a brush up on the basics of the faith, then this study is for you!

People don’t set out to build their faith upon myths and spiritual urban legends. But somehow such falsehoods keep showing up in the way that many Christians think about life and God. These goofy ideas and beliefs are assumed by millions to be rock-solid truth … until life proves they’re not. The sad result is often a spiritual disaster — confusion, feelings of betrayal, a distrust of Scripture, loss of faith, anger toward both the church and God. But it doesn’t have to be so. Join us for this study where we confront ten widely held beliefs that are both dumb and dangerous — and not Biblical.

MON P.M.Fight Club: You Have to Fight For a Great MarriageMarried Couples in their 20’s/30’sMonday, 6:30 p.m.The Clark’s homeLeaders: Jeff and Alicia Clark: [email protected]

The first rule of our Growth Group is that there is no Growth Group. OK, actually there is a Growth Group. At our house, on Monday’s at 6:30 PM. Anyway … even at a young age, it’s important to establish a pattern working in and on your marriage at all times. The Bible encourages us to plant hedges of protection around our marriages to keep temptation out. With infidelity creeping into even the happiest marriages, in a society that trivializes adultery and its devastating effects, with temptation and opportunity coming at you from all directions — how can you keep your marriage from becoming a statistic? The best advice is to fight for it like nothing else in your life.

The Principle of the Path: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be30’s / Level 2Monday, 6:00 p.m.The Malone’s homeLeader: Wesley Malone: [email protected]

There is often a tension between where we want to end up in life and the path we choose to get there. We fail to see that having good intentions is never good enough. Like Charlie Brown, we wrongly believe there’s something to be said for trying hard. We need to understand why, in spite of our good intentions, we may have ended up at the wrong destination with our finances, our marriages, our careers, or a host of other dreams. So how do we get from where we are to where we truly want to be? The Principle of the Path is a road map to proper direction and discipline.

TUES A.M.James: Mercy TriumphsWomen / Level 3Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.Church, Rooms 208/210Leaders: Challie Ray/Bobbie McCollum: [email protected]

James, Jesus’ own brother, started out as a skeptic; but one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Once you get to know both the man and the Book of James, you’ll never be the same again. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any New Testament book. James is a book with many topics — social justice, joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer — all of which are covered in this study.

TUES P.M.The Spiritual ManEveryone / Level 3Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.Strick’s BarbequeLeaders: Kent and Belinda Graham: [email protected]

We are selfish people who focus mainly on ourselves, right? No one would deny this. So, how do we live like Christ has called us to live—focused more on others? This study aims at delivering people from the tyranny of self life and our short-term focus on pleasing ourselves. Through Watchman Nee’s spiritual classic, mature believers can find the added spiritual practices beneficial to experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

Can You Hear Me Now?: A Study of HebrewsEveryone / Level 3Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.The Price’s homeLeaders: Randy & Annette Price: [email protected]

This contemporary advertising phrase made popular by the Verizon Guy, could actually be the theme of Hebrews. God is not silent. It is the nature of God to speak. A new world would arise in our lives if we would approach the bible not as a book once spoken, but a book that is now speaking. Join us as we see how the God of the Old Testament, through Christ in the New Testament, still speaks to us today.

Let’s be honest — if we had to explain the Gospel to someone who has never heard it, we’d probably have a hard time doing it, right? Many of us entrusted with the Gospel message have forgotten the message and our responsibility to accurately convey it. The recovery of a God-centered and grace-centered gospel is a must! In this study, we’ll expand on the topics of grace and worship while emphasizing the centrality of sovereign, saving grace that completely points us to Christ. Join us for this study on sharing the Gospel in a way that speaks to the people around us.

What do you do with a shattered dream? Or an unmet expectation? What do you do when your life isn’t turning out the way you thought it would? What do you do when you have to turn to Plan B? In this study, we’ll talk about real life disappointments and hurts along with the biblical stories of men and women like David, Joseph and Ruth to help us come to grips with the truth that they will face situations that in themselves they are completely unable to handle but that in them God is simply trying to get them to surrender their plans so that they can receive his. We’ll look to the cross, not just as the starting line but as the centerpiece of our story with God. It is there we turn in our plan B and find the undeniable relationship between crisis and hope followed by true life-change.

Looking at the Ministry of Jesus ChristMarried Couples / Level 2Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.Church, Room 206Leader: Bo Pennebaker: [email protected]

What do you say about who Jesus is? What about your friends? What does our culture say about Jesus? There is no greater question. No one is more loved and hated than Jesus. “To some an aroma of life. To others an aroma of death.” This generation seems to like Jesus…even if they don’t like church. We will approach the life of Jesus with this generation in mind as it introduces foundational doctrine about the person of Jesus Christ. This study is aimed to show why Jesus is worth giving your life to follow Him.

Through His long-suffering and steadfastness, God has invited us to know Him better. And the more intimate we become with Him, the more acquainted we become with His voice. He has proven Himself to us not because we are more special than anyone else, but because He loves proving His Word is true to all His children. Through this study, we will find ways to help you in your desire to hear Him speak: Realize the Way He Speaks, Recognize the Sound of His Voice, Remember What He Wants to Accomplish, and Ready Yourself for Even More. Discover the treasure of recognizing how God keeps in touch with his beloved people and watch as He communicates with you.

Seeking Wisdom in God’s WordEveryone / Level 3Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.Church, Room 203Leaders: Chris and Marlene Shivers: [email protected]

In Scripture, wisdom is portrayed as a most important treasure, something to be sought after with consistent discipline. We tend to think of wisdom as something to be attained — an ideal to which we aspire. The Bible contends that genuine wisdom is evidenced in how we live. The truly wise person is one whose values, perspectives, career goals, and daily decisions are all shaped by the wisdom found in Christ. Inevitably, there will be clashes between the wisdom of God and that of the world. In this study, we’ll see how to apply God’s wisdom as we handle finances, relate to others, care for our physical health, and carry out day-to-day duties. This significant volume presents a way of living that embodies wisdom from above.

So What’s the Difference?: How World Faiths Compare to Christianity20’s & 30’s / Level 2Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.Church, Room 223Leader David Whitehead: [email protected]

With the world shrinking and growing more diverse, we now find ourselves surrounded by people from different faith backgrounds than the once-traditional Christian faith. Join us as we’ll look at the basic beliefs of Protestantism, Catholicism, Islam, Hinduism, Jehovah’s Witness, Mormonism, New Age and more. You can break free from the power of destructive thoughts that control you: guilt, anger, greed and jealousy. You know, the things that lead to divorce, job loss, estrangement from family members and broken friendships. The difficult circumstances you are dealing with today are likely being fed by one of four emotional forces that compel you to act in undesirable ways, even when you don’t want to. This study explores those four destructive emotions and how they infiltrate your life and damage your relationships. Left unchallenged, they have the power to destroy our homes, careers and relationships. Fortunately in Christ, there is a better way.

WED 6:00 P.M.GraceEveryone / Level 3Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.The Beech’s homeLeaders: Lawrence and Janet Beech: [email protected]

Grace has become part of the basic vocabulary of every Christian. Unfortunately, many believers are abusing God’s amazing gift of grace. They have perverted God’s undeserved gift of forgiveness, making it a license for immorality, self-indulgence and minimal involvement in God’s kingdom. In the process they are robbing themselves of the joy that comes from obedience to God. In this study, we’ll challenge each other to gain a biblical understanding of grace by examining what the New Testament says about it, and reveal how “good grace” can protect your marriage, church and relationships from confusion and even abuse. Start experiencing the true freedom of living obediently in God’s good grace.

The Fitting Room: Putting on the Character of ChristWomen in their 20’s / Level 2Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.Church, Room 222Leader: Lori Birrer: [email protected]

Colossians 3:12 tells us to “clothe” ourselves in Christian virtues like forgiveness, joy, patience, and compassion. But how does that work in real life? Can we really “dress up” in the character of Christ? We’ll see that the answer is yes — if we let the Master Designer do the fitting. This study offers insightful Scripture study with real-life stories and simple, down-to-earth explanations of biblical concepts like justification and sanctification—with some humor and honesty thrown in. No gimmicks or guilt trips, just an irresistible invitation for women to enjoy a spiritual makeover — to put on a life that is personally tailored by the One who knows and loves us best.

Weary travelers. You’ve seen them-everything they own crammed into their luggage. Staggering through terminals and hotel lobbies with overstuffed suitcases, trunks, duffels, and backpacks. Backs ache. Feet burn. Eyelids droop. We’ve all seen people like that. At times, we are people like that-if not with our physical luggage, then at least with our spiritual load. We all lug loads we were never intended to carry. Fear. Worry. Discontent. No wonder we get so weary. We’re worn out from carrying that excess baggage. Wouldn’t it be nice to lose some of those bags? That’s the invitation of this Bible study. With the Twenty-third Psalm as our guide, let’s release some of the burdens we were never intended to bear.

How could a loving God send people to hell? Will people have a chance after they die to believe in Jesus and go to heaven? With a humble respect for God’s Word this study will address the deepest questions you have about eternal destiny. We all ultimately ask the same questions, and sometimes we just don’t want to believe in hell. But, we cannot afford to be wrong on this issue. It’s not about who says what; it’s about what God says. It’s not about an impersonal theological issue; it’s about people whom God loves. It’s not about arguments, doctrine, or being right; it’s about the character of God.

LEVEL 2After You Believe: Why Christian Character MattersMen / Level 2Sunday, 9:30 a.m.Church, Room 201Leader: Lanny Beach: [email protected]

Like Charlie Brown, we wrongly believe there’s something to be said for trying hard. We need to understand why, in spite of our good intentions, we may have ended up at the wrong destination with our finances, our marriages, our careers, or a host of other dreams.

We’d all probably admit that we’d like to get better at praying—especially those of us who fall asleep in the middle of trying to pray at night! The Bible is full of the prayers of people who walked closely with God—and we’ll see how we can apply them in our lives too. We’ll take a look at topics of emergency prayers, praying like Jesus, praying in faith, for our children, when we hurt and more. Join us to get better at communicating with God in a way that changes our lives for the better.

LEVEL 3GraceEveryone / Level 3Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.The Beech’s homeLeaders: Lawrence and Janet Beech: [email protected]
