North – their reality – industry and immigration
South – their reality – agriculture and slavery

California Gold Rush – 1849Entered the Union as a free state – supported by President Zachary Taylor who succeeded Polk.
South saw it as an attack on their way of life. CA both above and below the MO Compromise of 1820 36-30 line.
