MORE FSQA Changes
Lucas County will offer the FSQA training on April 12, 2017. The
statement that I received earlier this week included this infor-
mation; While the deployment of YQCA will continue as scheduled,
the sunset of the current Food Safety and Quality Assurance
(FSQA) process will be delayed an additional 12 months, until the
start of the 2019 program year This will allow Iowa 4-H to further
evaluate some of the concerns and the strengths.
This means that FSQA will continue as usual this year, including the
testing out option. I will offer the testing this year, but be aware, it
may not be honored next year.
Leader Training is coming right up!
The annual leader training will be held on January 19, 2017 at 6:30 pm in the meeting room of the extension office. I’ll provide a meal again this year. Please plan on attending this meeting to take care of all the training needed for 2017. Attending this meeting early in the year makes it much easi-er on everyone. Please call Kelly at 774-2016 if you have questions.
Great Learning Opportunity! The Iowa Extension Council Association is hosting their an-nual legislative day in Des Moines on February 28, 2017. As a part of our legislative day this year, the association is invit-ing our 4-Hers to receive more information about the legisla-tive process.
One 4-Her from each county will have the opportunity to meet with legislators, tour the Capital, and learn about the legislative process and what bearing it has on Iowa State Extension and Outreach. An extension council member from your county will accompany the 4-Her to serve as a mentor that day.
Each extension council will be responsible for selecting the 4-Her that will represent their county. 4-Hers must be available to attend the legislative day on February 28. The Iowa Ex-tension Council Association encourages an application pro-
cess to assist with this selection. Applications will be re-
viewed by the county extension council and the council will
select the 4-H member delegate, along with an alternate, to
represent the county. An editable application, additional infor-mation and an online registration form is available on the
IECA Legislative Day and 4-H Citizenship Experience
webpage. We look forward to inspiring the next generation of leaders through this 4-H citizenship opportunity.
Applications are due in the Lucas County Extension Office on February 2, 2017 at 4:30 pm.

The following statement will be added to the fair book:
4-H & FFA exhibitors that have livestock eligible for the sale will
have the following two options:
1) Selling by the pound
2) Selling premium only
This decision MUST be made when the exhibitor designates his/her
sale animal(s). There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.
SELLING BY THE POUND: If the exhibitor (seller) is selling by the
pound, the ownership of the animal(s) will become that of the
buyer. The buyer will then have the option to retain possession of
the animal(s) or send the animal(s) to the packer.
SELLING “PREMIUM ONLY”: If you are selling “Premium Only”,
the exhibitor (seller) will retain possession of the animal(s) and the
buyer will be responsible to pay the premium only over the set
floor price of that particular species. Animals selling as “Premium
Only” will be clearly designated on the sale bill. Any livestock sell-
ing as “Premium Only” will be sold at the end of that particular
species’ sale.
ALL ANIMALS OFFERED FOR SALE ARE TERMINATED AS 4-H AND
FFA PROJECTS.
Farm Service Agency Rural Youth Loan Program
The US Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency
(FSA) makes operating loans of up to $5,000 to eligible indi-
vidual rural youths age 10 through 20 to finance income-
producing, agriculture-related projects. The project must be
of modest size, educational, and initiated, developed and
carried out by rural youths participating in 4-H clubs, FFA or a
similar organization.
The project must be an organized and supervised program of
work. It must be planned and operated with the assistance of
the organizational advisor, produce sufficient income to repay
the loan, and provide the youth with practical business and
educational experience in agriculture-related skills.
Contact the local FSA office at (641)774-2119 (ask for Molly
or Melissa) or visit them at 21792 490th Street, Chariton.

4-H Scholarship Information
Applications for the scholarship program will be available
on December 1, 2016. Over 90 scholarship opportunities
valued at over $90,000 will be awarded. I have a list of
the individual scholarships available in the office. I would
love to write a letter of recommendation for any of my 4-
H members!

Quilting
Workshops
I’ve scheduled dates for the quilting workshops . I will need
RSVP’s as soon as possible to prepare to the classes. I have
lots of experience to share with 4-H members and their
adult supervision. Each member (under the age of 15) will
need to have an adult accompany them with classes. This
will make it easier for everyone when it comes to the cutting
and construction of the quilts. I’ll break the process up into
five classes, giving each member time to complete their
“homework.”
January 17th: 1st class; general basics about fabric choic-
es, receive the pattern, fabric purchases, etc...
January 31st: 2nd class; receive cutting instructions, basic
block instruction
February 21st: 3rd class; more information on block con-
struction, learn about pressing, row construction
March 21st: 4th class; adding borders, deciding whether
to tie or quilt, how to prepare for the quilter, choosing a
backing fabric & batting
April 18th: last class; Show and Tell! Learn about binding
and how to care for your quilt
I’m planning on holding the classes at the extension office,
but we can move them to my “shop” if necessary to help get
things cut and pressed. Feel free to call me if you have any
questions. This will be a great project to show at the fair!
What a great experience to learn this art with someone spe-
cial!
Fee to attend will be $25.00 per 4-H member. No charge
for the adults
Come make a 2017 fair project with us!!
We have MANY signed up so far!
Thank you to those who
helped gather deer hides for our fundraiser!
We’re still taking them!
Our next regularly scheduled meeting will be
January 9,2017.
Clover Sprout
Update
January is here!
Jr. Clover Sprouts will be held on January 3rd
from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.
Sr. Clover Sprouts will be held on January 5
from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.
I’m again asking for each Sprout pay $5.00
for the year to help offset the cost of sup-
plies and snacks.
Remember that we will be following the Chariton School
schedule: If school is cancelled or released early for
weather conditions, Clover Sprouts will be cancelled for
that day.
This year, we’ll learn kitchen skills! We’ll
prepare simple meals and try new tastes! I’m
sure the Sprouts will learn lots and be excited
to share what they’ve learned!
