CFYM Events

Can You Help? Parents Night Out: We need some extra volunteers to help provide child care one Saturday a month for three hours. During this

time, you along with the other volunteers would help serve dinner and create crafts with the kids. It truly is a good time for all. If

this is something you are interested in please contact Katie Curtin.

Do you Have a Child That Can Acolyte? If you have a child that is second grade or up who would love a chance to acolyte please

contact Katie Curtin to get them started.

Summer School Teachers Needed- As many of you know we like to give our hard-working regular teachers some time off during the

summer. If teaching a Sunday school class is something that has interested you now is your chance to give it a try. The CFYM board

has worked hard at creating an easy to teach program that you will be successful at executing. Look for the signup sheet at the get

connected table to sign up for the Sunday that works best for you.

A Word from Katie July was a busy and exciting month for the Children Family Youth Ministry Program and August is looking just as fun! This month

Sunday School will continue their Bible Blockbuster Series. In K-5 the children are watching an animated Bible movie series that is

introducing them to the Bible. Your child should be coming home with a work packet that reinforces what they have learned from

both the movie and class time. Junior and Senior High, are wrapping their study of Ancestors in the Bible and will begin their own

Bible Blockbuster series.

A Bunch of Thanks! This year 8 of the Senior High Youth embarked on a trip to Chiloquin Oregon to participate in the Sierra

Service Project. During their week-long participation, the youth helped in building wheelchair ramps, fences and helped to meet

many other needs for local struggling residence. The week the youth spent at SSP is one that brought them closer to each other

and God. This week would not be possible if it were not for the donations from the congregation, fundraising and all amazing

volunteers who help organize and chaperone this trip. A big thank you to Lynn Zigmant and Nancy Cramer who took the lead on

organizing this year’s trip, and Elisha Cortez and ED Lawson for chaperoning this year.

Vacation Bible School is a yearly event that the children in our local community look forward too. This year our church hosted 40

children and about 35 volunteers during the week. This event is not possible without the support of our church congregation. The

CFYM team would like to thank everyone who gave, money, supplies, time and prayer for the success of VBS.

Thank you so much for the touching and delicious farewell breakfast given by CFYM, the church's children and youth and their parents. The place mats are just beautiful and will look great in our new home and the cards and messages warm our hearts. A special message just for the children and youth: YOU are a great part of the reason that we looked for a neighborhood to move to that had lots of children, tweens, and teens. We love you and will miss you when we move to Idaho (not sure exactly when but sometime this summer) but we will be back from time to time and will look forward to seeing you then.

Love and Blessings, Bill & Roxie

August 4th at 5 pm, Back to School Backpack Stuffing Party— Every year the

CFYM team collects backpacks and school supplies. These backpacks are then

stuffed and are distributed to New Morning Shelter and The Rescue Union School

District. CFYM would like to host a back to school backpack stuffing party. We will

enjoy a potluck dinner so bring a dish to share, and then work as a team to stuff

the backpacks with supplies. In the past, we have stuffed 80-90 backpacks. This is

a great way to give back to our community while having fellowship. I hope to see

you there.

August 18, Hot August Sunday— This will be our second annual children ran Hot

August Sunday. The children will come up with some congregational activities

and lead the congregation on completing each task. This event will be held at

10:30am in between worship services.

Annual Conference 2019 This article is adapted from a piece written by the

California Nevada Conference Communication’s Office.

An opportunity to hear directly about this year’s session

from our congregation’s Lay Member, Lynn Zigmant and

Pastor Mike was held on Sunday, June 23rd.

Conference members devoted the first two nights to

Christian conferencing on strategic visioning for California-

Nevada, organized by the CORE Team, the program

coordinating arm of our conference, and guided by various

leaders and emerging leaders in the conference, including

young adults.

The presence and participation of a 60-strong delegation of

youth and young adults was fully in evidence, in fact, from

legislative section leadership to the election of one young

adult (Rebecca Bernstein, age 23) as a General Conference

delegate, and of 3 young adults to Jurisdictional Conference

plus 2 on reserve (6 in all).

The conference approved several items in response to the

2019 General Conference including a task force to investigate

various proposals for structural change, a statement of

conscientious dissent from the Traditional Plan, and directing

the Conference Core Team to coordinate efforts to be non-

compliant with the Traditional Plan with partners throughout

the Western Jurisdiction. In preparation for upcoming 2020

General Conference a resolution requesting that the Western

Jurisdiction College of Bishops considers calling a special

Jurisdictional Conference was approved.

Other resolutions before the Annual Conference Session

included:

A resolution asking Governor Gavin Newsom for

pardons for non-violent drug offenders;

A resolution on The Least of These: Speaking Up for

the Children of Gaza;

A resolution of Thanks to Governor Gavin Newsom

for Moratorium on Death Penalty;

A resolution Towards Ending Child Incarceration

Through Support for the rights of children;

A resolution in support for the Berta Cáceres

Human Right in Honduras Act.

A resolution on Building Faith Communities of

Hospitality and Understanding

A resolution in support of full communion with the

Episcopal Church;

Several items and petitions concerned changes to

the Book of Discipline including a resolution on the

rights of licensed local pastors and commissioned

provisional elders.

A Conference budget of $6,000,000, a 2.7% increase

from the 2019 spending plan, was approved.

During the conference, 13 people were ordained, commissioned or

licensed as United Methodist clergy including six who are openly

LGBTQ. Two elders on a provisional basis were received, one

reinstated, and five received as transfers. In addition, twelve clergy

retired, representing more than 301 years of service. 32 clergy

persons and spouses who died over the past twelve months were

remembered in the annual Memorial Service.

Our conference consecrated and commissioned a missionary. Hesed

Soriano Lim, from the Philippines, will join the teaching staff of Seth

Mokitimi Methodist Seminary in Pietermaritzburg, Kwazulu/Natal,

South Africa as part of the "everywhere to everywhere" community

of UM missionaries. The Annual Conference offering benefiting the

Davuilevu Theological College in Fiji brought in almost $24,000.

Next year’s annual conference session will again be held in Modesto,

California at the Convention Center on Friday, June 12- Monday, June

will work with Pastor Mike to discern a meaningful vision for worship

during the fall season please sign up at the Get Connected Table.

Participation will involve one meeting on August 11, 2:30 to 4:30. We will

brainstorm possible themes, and discern meaningful scripture passages to

root our Sunday morning worship experiences in.

Membership Gathering Are you interested in becoming an official member of Foothills UMC? Or

perhaps, just interested in learning more about the United Methodist

Church? Pastor Mike will be offering a membership gathering on Sunday,

September 8 from 3:00pm-5:30pm. If you are interested in attending,

please sign up at the Get Connected Table or email Pastor Mike directly,

[email protected]. Please indicate if you will need child-care

during that time. All are welcome, there is no obligation to formally join.

In Memory Bobbie Ashworth (Garrison) passed away on June 27, 2019 after a period of

illness. On July 27th, family and friends gathered at River City Christian

Church to celebrate the life of Urania Tarbet who passed away on July 4,

2019. We give thanks to God for the long and full lives of both these friends.

May God hold all who mourn their passing in God’s abundant care.

Special Thanks! We especially thank Jim Alderink for his efforts in deep cleaning the

entryway and hallway floor. We are grateful for all of those who care for our

church building as a House of the Lord.

“You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together, we

can do great things.” —Mother Teresa

If you were in worship on Sunday, July 14 you heard Merwin Brown

announce my reappointment to Foothills UMC for another year. I’m

thrilled to have the opportunity to be in ministry with you for a 7th

year. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed, but when I

look at my daughters who were 5 and 2 ½ years old when we came

to Foothills, the passage of time is impossible to deny. As I think

about this 7th year of ministry together, I find that there are several

areas of focus that I am particularly interested in.

Our congregation was selected to participate in the Growing Young

Initiative, a collaborative effort between our Conference and the

Fuller Youth Institute (See related article in this newsletter). This

will be a specific area of my focus over the course of the next year

and I’m interested to see how the initiative might help us provide a

more relevant and meaningful spiritual experience for teenagers

and young adults.

This past spring a small team from Foothills attended a worship

workshop sponsored by our Conference. Since our participation in

that workshop I have pondered the benefit of contracting with the

workshop leader to come to Foothills and do an assessment of both

of our Sunday morning worship services. While there is a financial

cost involved, I believe the benefit of getting an outside perspective

relative to our Sunday morning worship experiences has the

potential to be very useful. My hope is to get approval from the

appropriate congregational leadership to be able to move forward

with the worship assessment this fall.

The evolution of the Reconciling process that our Church Council

decided to initiate in late spring, and how our Reconciling Team will

guide us in that process, is a source of interest for me as well as we

move through our 7th year together.

I also believe that in the coming weeks we will have the opportunity

to once again engage in some faith based advocacy on behalf of our

homeless brothers and sisters as our County Board of Supervisors

considers future use for the recently decommissioned Juvenile Hall

in Placerville. In many respects, it may be the best option for a year

-round, permanent shelter facility thus far.

Finally, the conflict and division within the larger United Methodist

Church, and how it impacts us regionally and locally, will be

something that requires our continued attention, discussion, and

discernment over the next 12 months.

These are a few potentially defining issues that we have the

opportunity to work together on over the next year, and I’m

grateful to be able to work toward addressing them with a

congregation like Foothills.

Peace.

Pastor Mike
