2.7 - RECOMMENDATIONS

When we looked at the office of international students we found a pattern in enrollment statuses from different countries, we felt this pattern warranted further research. The pattern we noticed was that in certain countries there were higher enrolments than in other countries. So we decided to research, why this was happening.
We collected our data from 3 questions;
1) The reason(s) why students applied to MSU.2) The problems the students experienced while at MSU.3) Problems student experienced when applying to MSU.
After our initial question responses that we received from a selection of international students, we inputted the data into a check sheet Pareto chart to see if we could see a pattern and straight away we could almost see a pattern. We then produced a Check sheet / Pareto chart, we decided to plot a fishbone chart that includes some of the possible improvements that students responded with what they felt were issues, after this we collated a run chart, that showed our data(enrollments by countries) plotted over time. By collecting and charting our data, we could find trends or patterns in the process, because run charts do not use control limits, run charts could not tell us if a process is stable or not. The scatter diagram we produced was analyzing relationships between China and Saudi Arabia, Europe, & Africa to find a correlation between them, the reason we chose China, was that this country had high rates of enrollments, one reason we found that China has a MSU office their vs the others that do not. When we run a control chart Xbar – sbar to find if the data was in control, we found that Asia, Europe & Australasia were showing a trend or pattern all the other countries vary randomly around the center line and are within the control limits.
Our recommendations after analyzing the data, would be to;
• In an international student environment, it would be beneficial to employ international speaking people that can help with the integration into a mostly English speaking population at MSU. We found that in the international student services department there was an employee that spoke Chinese, if this was available for other countries this could improve student enrollment from other countries, If this was the case, we feel that they could help with life at MSU.
• In the Pareto charts there is an issue with Language & Housing, the main issues students were indicating, were that with a lack of anybody from there home countries speaking there native language, they felt lost and alienated. Student are aware that they are expected to speak English, but feel though the communication barrier is a problem for them, when conveying issues. The data showed that if there was a representative from there home countries that this would not be an issue.
• Food, Culture, and entertainment were also main concerns for the international students.
If the department of international students employed students or personnel from the home countries rather than just from the country that MSU resides, we feel the enrollment of international student would rise. The retention rate of students would also improve.
