I. Introduction
The information in this group profile belongs to the sixth grade students
from the Luz A. Cruz de Santana elementery school. In this 6-1 group, there are 21
students but three of the students’ parents or legal guardian did not allow from them to
participate. The certified English teacher is Percychel Torres, the cooperating teacher.
The data gathered throughout this group profile will help me to identify the demographics
and interests of my practice group.
The instrument used as data gathering was a questionnaire based on the sample
given in the Participant Observation course. The questions were modified in order to
facilitate the understanding and vocabulary. The questions were focused to identify the
weaknesses and strengths as well as students personality and hobbies. The questionnaire
was given in the classroom and fill out by the students to make sure the questions were
answered and to clarify any difficulties. This gives students the opportunity to
experiences a questionnaire that can be part of a job application form in their future.
All this information will facilitate the process of knowing my students. The
purpose of this group profile is to get a better understanding of the students and to
simplify the lesson plan to their interest. This information will also help me with themes
for journal.

GENDER:

Female
In the above Table 1, we can visualize students’ gender. The classroom has a rate of 55%
of boys and 45% girl this can be positive to have debate and competition between gender because
there is not much different. At this age, students are very competitive and like to win. This can be
a strategy to review for test in the classroom with boys verse girls.

In table 2 shows the result of students’ age rate from 10 to 12 years old. This indicates
that 6th grade students over the age of 12 repeated a grade once. The group has no indication of
students who repeated grades.

Table 3 shows students living area, which are urban, rural, and public housing
areas. Rural areas have less neighbors and noise; this may be an advantage to student.
Even though, now a day there is not much different between the two areas. Both areas
may experience the same development and experiences with diversity. Public Housing is
a difficult area to be living and growing up in Puerto Rico. The violence in public
housing can affect students’ behavior, concentration, and sleep. A child can be facing bad
experience for example shooting at night and this may affect the performance in the
classroom.

Based on the above Table 5, demonstrate students who live with both parents may have
the advantage to a better economy. This can mean more income. In addition, this can help the
student performance with a better attitude concerning school. However, mother as head of the
family is the most in the class. The mother is in charge of the house and the disciple of the kids.

Table 6 is the amount of family members in the household is to understand the
attention the student is getting in relation with homework and assignment. The members
in the family help understand the capacity to focus. The more members the family has the
less time to study and the parents have less time to help with homework.

In table 7 explain the parents education. It is a negative situation because most of
the parents without the education have less opportunity to find a good job to support the
family. Plus parent will not be able to give the student addition help in the schoolwork.
The students will receive very little help when it comes to academic matter.

Study
In Table 13 shows students use their free time to listen to music than reading or
studying. This may seem like a problem depending on the lyrics, but I can use it to
motivate students to writing about their favorite singer or music. I can also use some of
the songs for motivation technique.

In Table 14 , shows that the group gets to school by car. This can be an advantage
because the students will show up on time and are being driving by a family member.
Which I can communicate and see in the morning. In the group, one student walks to and
from school. The most used transportation is the car and no students have bus services.

We can see in Table 15, there are five students with different type of medical condition.
This can be a disadvantage because absent can play a concern in these students. When taking
attendances I must consider these students to get the information for the classes they have missed.

Attent Does not Attend
Table 16 shows if parents attend to the meeting. Out of 18 students, 5 parents or legal
guardian do not attend the meetings due to work schedule. On the other hand, most of the parents
attend to school meeting. Teachers need to put together alternate some meeting at different time and
schedule to have parents because parents need to know students progress or problem affecting their
achievement.

In table 17, illustrate parents that help with the homework. In my group, all parents or legal
guardian help with students’ homework. This is a positive situation for the student having their parents
support. As well, teacher can rely with parents, to help with the attitude or behavior of the student.
This is a positive situation because students need the parents to help with their homework.

IV. Reflection
The information gather from the survey shows some negative and positive
situations. This information will help me to obtain ideas that interest students. The survey
offer students favorite sport. I will use this information has a motivation technique with
pictures to add to a presentation; this will help students to write about their favorite
things. This will help me identify students’ background and history in and out of school.
By having all this information, I will also use it to do the lesson plan by finding
informtaion to motivate students. My goal is to make sure students are having fun and
learning at the same time.
This will help me to demonstrate that English can be fun and the students will
support this. When students entered the class and they are talking about the story read for
the day before. These things will alert and let teacher know that students like the
selections given. In addition, students will be motivated to do the homework and eager to
showup to class.
When doing a lesson plan and selecting a story a teacher must realize what
student like, can they relate with the story, and identify with the characters. Also with the
survey, I can select short stories for 6th graders that interest them. This will allow students
to participate and contrivute to the class.
14
By knowing students, I will have a better understanding of their problems and
issues. For example, if a teacher needs to intervene with a student do to the grade, the
teacher can have a better understanding of the student situation in and out of the school.
Any detail about their life can help me get the student back on track.
Therefore, teachers have many tools to use in the classroom to motivate students.
However, a well-developed lesson plan will reflects students’ interest and needs. A
teacher most balances student’s interest and the purpose from the class.
