Forming.

• 1st stage

• Joining a group

Meeting others for the first time• Sometimes by choice

or sometimes not…

Storming

• 2nd stage --- (can happen before) or almostimmediately after forming

• Increased anxiety / tension for all

People may not understand expectations• May act out (fronting) --- “fight”

• May act in (passive) --- “flight”

• May not really be themselves --- “freeze”

• People may be resistantto being part of the group

Norming

• 3rd stage --- We are not “trying to make you

normal” just agree on how we can work

respectfully together

• Learning or being reminded of expectations

• Being open-minded to considering change

There are “unwritten rules” in

life, to figure them out we need

to watch and listen.

At your desk take 2 minutes of quiet time:

• In your mind say sharply to yourself “STOP.”

• In your mind count up to 10 slowly, then count

down from 10 slowly.

• Breathe deeply and exhale slower than you

inhale (mindful breathing)

• Pull in your stomach muscles tightly – hold for

5 – relax.

• Push feet hard into the floor – hold for 5 –

relax.

• Grasp below seat of the chair and push up –

hold for 5 - relax

• Take 5 minutes in the back of the room (a

“time-in”, PTO, whatever you prefer to call it),

calmly breathe, draw, write, etc. for 5 minutes.

•  Reset your thinking so you can calmly return

to group instruction.

Do you need to ask to check-in

with someone (when they are

available)?
