Purpose of Group Discussion

Group discussion is a new trend that has come up in order to evaluate student personality

It is used as one of the best tools to select the prospective candidates in a comparative perspective

In this methodology,

the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation,

given a few minutes to think about the same, and

then asked to discuss the topic among themselves for 15-20 minutes.

Reason for the GD

Why Organization put you through a GD and an interview,

after testing your technical and conceptual skills in an exam,

Is to get to know you as a person and gauge how well you will fit in their organization.

GD evaluates how you can function as a part of a TEAM.

As a Manager or as a Member of an organization you will always working in teams.

Therefore how you interact in a team becomes an important criterion for your selection.

Advantages of a GD exercise

1. It helps to shed away the shyness of a candidate and brings his viewpoint amidst all.

2. It stimulates to think in a different, new way.

3. It helps the candidate in understanding his/her own strengths and weaknesses

4. It acts as an aid in expansion of the knowledge of the participation.

5. It helps to analyze the social or economic issues more logically

DO & Don’ts in a GD1. Be as Natural as possible2. Be yourself3. In an attempt to be someone else,

your opinions will not be portrayed.4. Sit with a straight and confident

posture5. Be assertive yet humble6. You need to stick to your values and

beliefs, but learn to respect the values and opinions of others too.

7. Grab the opportunity to speak first i.e., to start the GD with your opinion.

8. It generally leaves a good impression on the evaluator, but take the move only if you the complete knowledge of the subject.

9. Do not repeat a point, or be lengthy or irrelevant.
