A competency model for effectiveness in managing multiple projects
Projects are now considered a source of business success. A project maybe a huge one or different interrelated project are combined to form a portfolio of projects. A project manager who over looks any project since inception to delivery and operations is a single project manager. And a project manager who simultaneously manages multiple projects which might be interrelated is a multi-project manager.
Managing one project through it life cycle is easier compared to managing multiple projects at the same time. Several factors impact the management of multiple projects and require additional competencies in the multi-project manager.
There are several knowledge, skills and competencies of the project manager. A project manager should technical knowledge and should also portray management skills to provide guidance. Important competencies that project manager needs are the ones in technical, operational, human and strategic area.
A multi project manager is required to have competencies related to multitasking and should be able to manage the interdependency among projects.
There are competencies for coordinating projects:
Organizational Experience Interdependency Management Multitasking Simultaneous Team Management Management of Inter project
Competencies for leading individual projects are:
Administrative/process Interpersonal/Intrapersonal Business/strategic Technical
High velocity industries want to achieve effectiveness. Successful multiple project managers possess more competencies and utilize them more than others. More research is required in the domain of the multiple project management.
