Project Title:
Implement improvement in quality nursing care for diabetic patients at Fujairah Hospital.
Introduction:
Diabetes Mellitus:
Is a chronic disease leads to many serious complication (e.g) Cardiovascular complication, Nephropathy, Retinopathy
Aim of this Study:
This topic was selected to prevent complications & promoting diabetic patient healthy in Fujairah community. It is also known that taking care of diabetic patients is very costly.
WHO Report:
The latest WHO Report shows that around 135 million people are affected with diabetes mellitus & nearly the same number do not known that they have the disease. This number is expected to double in the coming 20 years.
UAE Report:
In the UAE the last national survey in 2001 showed that around 20% of the population are diabetic & around 13% are liable to develop diabetes mellitus each year.
UAE national 24.6 % are diabetic
UAE national above 40 years of age 64 % are diabetic
Vision:
To achieved good glycemic control & delay acute & chronic complications of diabetes mellitus.
Target Group:
1- Diabetes mellitus in Fujairah Hospital, medical, surgical ward, diabetic clinic, Maternity ward, peadiatric ward.
2- Nursing staff from wards and out patient.
Key Goals I: Update staff knowledge & skill about diabetes mellitus.
Objective Action Outcome
1- the staff nurse should be able to update knowledge about diabetes mellitus, comprehensively following workshop 2- The staff nurse should be able to give insulin injection using the checklist with 100% accuracy
- Pre test- Lecture- Group work- Open discussion- Post test- Evaluation - Demonstration - Group work
Positive result & good participation as reflected by the graph All participant administered insulin injection accurately.

1- Patients should be aware of the causes, signs & symptoms & how to prevent complications of diabetes mellitus. 2 – Patients should be able to practice self administration of insulin

Suggestions & Recommendations:
This project had initially highlighted the needs of diabetic patients at Fujairah Hospital, which revealed the need for a sincere, continuous effort to ensure & monitor the best care for those patients.
Suggestions & Recommendations:
So the team suggest to:
1- Conduct frequent educational projects for the staff.
2- Make glucometer available for all the patients
3- Involvement of staff in the national & international diabetic conferences.
4- Have an access to a web site for diabetes mellitus & the findings of this project can be used as a reference for further projects.
5- Provide Hot line with 24hrs services for diabetic patient.
