I’ve never had my own locker, spent a Saturday in detention or liked Simple Minds, but still feel at home when The Breakfast Club comes on. A John Hughes classic and one of the great high school films, don’t you forget about this one. If you’ve watched Not Another Teen Movie, this is the source.

But 100 Year Old Drivers sheds light on the elderly motorist conundrum, told by elderly motorists. A lovely, character-led documentary.

87TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS

Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel were the big winners at the 87th Annual Academy Awards.

Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s comedy drama about an ageing film star trying to reinvent himself as a Broadway actor, which starred Golden Globe winner Michael Keaton, took home the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay prizes at the 2015 Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

The film fought off stiff competition from Richard Linklater’s Boyhood - which was filmed over a twelve-year period - to win Best Picture and Best Director at the prestigious event and saw Iñárritu dedicate his accolade to his fellow Mexicans in both Mexico and the US who deserve “dignity and respect”.

The last time I talked to old skool soul singer Charles Bradley he was on a dodgy cell phone, calling from Australia, promoting his debut album and getting ready to perform International Festival of the Arts, Wellington.

His mother, one of the anchor points of his tumultuous life, had just passed on, and although he was talking it up, it was clear he was moved by the event. He’d only just released his debut album No Time For Dreaming (2011) at the ripe ‘ol age of 62.

He’d moved back to his mother’s house after confronting her about abandoning him as a baby to be raised by his grandparent. He was climbing out of poverty, having been discovered by Daptones Records and was building his reputation as a singer bigger that James Brown. That was the closest we’d ever get to the Godfather. After all he’d spent most of his life walking in James’ shoes - and jumpsuit.

Before being “discovered” Bradley had performed in a JB tribute band. And now Bradley’s back down under, performing a New Zealand Bluesfest sideshow at Auckland’s Powerstation on Thursday 26 March. He’ll be performing on the back of his second album, Victim of Love and an acclaimed documentary, Charles Bradley: Soul of America.

The film is a tale of a man that beats the odds. Canteen cook, homeless man, handyman, journeyman, street kid.. He had bouts of depression and was financially destitute at various points. He may have started late but he finally found his place. And following his recruitment to Brooklyn’s Daptone label, he’s also cuttin’ his own groove.

His new life as a headlining entertainer has brought fame and fortune. So what’s changed in the last while? How has this new career changed Charles Bradley?

“It ain’t,” he says, “I’m still Charles. There’s still love in my heart. I’m still bringin’ love to the people.”

“I’ve plenty more to say. I’ve done album two and I’m working on album three. I gotta keep myself busy, focus away from the negatives like losing my mom. Focus on the positive, let that positive energy out in the world (through my music). I need to find the music to go with my lyrics, get my expression out to the people.”

Energy is Bradley’s watchword. I can still remember him telling me about getting electrocuted on stage in Texas.

“Thousands of people were waiting for me, standing in the rain. So I said ‘Well, I’m gonna go perform for them.’ I jumped off the stage, in my white suit. Nothing but mud all over! I got back on stage, grabbed the microphone and I got me an electric shock like I never felt before!”

Has he had anymore of those crazy moments? “I had one in SXSW, Texas. There was about 10,000 people, I was on an old stage and I did the splits and a splinter went right up into my knee. I was bleedin’ but I didn’t know I was bleedin’. I thought I was sweatin’ till one of the band members said ‘Charles, You bleedin’. You wanna stop?’ I said ‘No! I’m enjoying myself. They’re enjoying themselves. We gotta keep goin’!’ And we did, even though blood’s pouring down the leg of my jumpsuit. I reached down and pulled that splinter right out. People wanted to take me to

the doctor. But I wanted to go on. I felt all the love of everyone helping me - it was all the love that kept going!”

Way back in ‘62, Bradley witnessed a life-changing performance by James Brown at Harlem’s Apollo.

“I knew then I was gonna sing,” and not just any music but Soul! It’s the music that really defines you… honest…it’s about love and tragedy. It’s real!”

It was his sister who took him along to see James at a time when he was out on the street, living rough on the streets, sleeping on trains. Faith is very important and it was tested continuously. It was then that salvation came calling.

“It changed me. I remember everything, every lick, every tune. The whole picture stuck in my mind.”

Recently Bradley played that very same theatre, with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.

“Boy was that a show! Hell, I was home. I said ‘the more I can let my spirit free... the more I can do here.’ It was full circle. I was giving back to the place and the people that saved me! That’s it, all I want to give back. But I also feel that I can find a little space in my heart for myself, too. So I can carry on! I look at this world and think what can I do to make this world better! That’s my gift to the world! Make the people feel better!”

Amen to that.
