Objectives

to personal grooming• Identify the recommended and not

recommended grooming for nurse students and nurses

• Create an advertising or promotion media to encourage good grooming among the nurses students

• Grooming refers to the things that people do to keep themselves clean and make their face, hair, and skin look nice. 

• Personal grooming (also called titivating and preening) is the art of cleaning, grooming, and maintaining parts of the body.

• It is a species-typical behavior that is controlled by neural circuits in the brain

• Positive self-image• Professional image• Behaviors image

Remember that you represent the nursing profession at all

times — whether at work or at play. Your clothes, hygiene, actions, and behaviors are

always on display. This can be an intense responsibility and unfair at times, perhaps, but

something you must be aware of.

• People unconsciously judge your socioeconomic status, background, level of education, and personality from your grooming (Whitmore, 2005).

• How you dress makes a powerful statement about yourself.

• A flattering color will make your eye color more intense and your skin tone more vibrant, and will give you an energetic look and vice versa.

Hair• No PUNK style for man• No long hair for man• Shaving regularly for man• Cover with veil for lady• Veil must cover chest• No pony and tail• Should kept out of the eyes• Tucked behind the ears, pulled back

with a barrette, pulled up in a ponytail, or twisted up with a clamp

• Keep it clean and free from odor

• 55% thought that identifying their RN was not easy.

• 94% thought nurses appeared to be professional.

• 64% thought nurses should be allowed to wear any color uniform.

• 73% thought nurses should keep their hair back and off their shoulders.

• 91% thought nurses should not wear long fingernails.

• 80% said they would like to identify their RN by a large print “RN” on a name badge.

• 39% said they would like to identify their RN by uniform color.

• Communicate: visually, vocally, and verbally

• The visual element has the strongest impact and consists of everything people see when they look at you

Body Language Tips

Standing• Stand tall with your shoulders back

and your chin up• Keep your shoulder relaxed• Avoiding slouching, swaying, and

shifting your feet• Don’t keep your hands in your

pockets• Folding your arms may denote

defensiveness or disagreement• Don’t put your hands on your hips

Sitting

• Sit up straight• Keep legs together,

especially when wearing a skirt

• Avoid slouching• Don’t jiggle your knees or

tap your feet

Facial Expressions• A sincere smile denotes

warmth and friendliness• A false smile makes you look

phony• A frown makes you look

angry or worried• Be animated, but don’t

overdo

Eye Contact• Looking at the eyes of

another shows your interest

• Occasionally look away and move your eyes to another part of the face

• Don’t stare or shift your eyes

Conclusion • You will have a better chance of

feeling good on the inside if you look good on the outside

• Dress for the job you aspire to, not for the job you have

• Wear clothes that fit well.• Your clothes impact your credibility• Don’t wear sunglasses or hats inside• Sloppy clothing may imply sloppy

work

• Divide the class into groups : 8-10 persons each group

• Create the promotion media to encourage good grooming among nursing students, ex:• How to wear good clothes• How to maintain body appearance• How to behave• etc

• Media: poster, leaflet, banner, etc• Duration: 2 weeks• Weight: 15% of total score• Week 4: 1 hour meeting to present the

homework and choose the best homework
