PIECING TOGETHER YOUR COMMUNITY
CONNETICAMBITION
GRO: The Southern Lower Lea Valley SchemeAs a key centre in the GRO area,we would like to c reate a Canning Town that is more than simply a space to pass through; to create a place in whichone can live, and neighbourhoods in which to work and play comfortably. Harnessing and building on Canning Towns existing infrastructure, wewant to break down the physical and social divides; reduce the inequalities and connect both residence and newcomers alike, back to Canning Town
CanningTown; characterisedby physicalsegregation, divisiveinfrastructureand hostilelandscapes. Designedfor thecarm orethanthepedestrian, itisatownthroughwhichpeoplepass; raisedabovethegroundonfourlanecarriagewayswithlittlereasontostop...

Existing adequate housing
Change of use - industrial landinto high quality housing
Substandard housing suitablefor retrotting and densication
To support the new and modernised infrastructure of
Canning Town, we aim to phase in an average housingdensity of around 75dph
Newham has marked 1,700 sub-standard houses readyfor demolition
Over a 5 year period, up to 10,000 houses are to be
built in Canning Town
The number of one/two bed properties in Newham is
rising as the larger properties are divided up to acco-modate more people
Moving away from the socially isolating high rise ats, create mid-high density developments that encouragecommunity interaction
At around 30%, Newham has a higher proportion ofsocial housing than the London average (23%) andEngland averages (17%).
With the help of the Government's Mixed Comm-
unities Initiative, construct developments with avariety of dierent tenures
Tenure blind schemes will ensure that the build quality
of social housing is maintained at the same level asrivate housing
Newham should consist of at least 44% family housing
(3 bedrooms)
173 hectares of Newham industrial land has beenreleased to free up space, to include the constructionof a high number of new homes
The Canning Town, Custom House Regenerationproject: A 3.7 billion project with a focus on housingquality.

1 - Ravensbourne:specialising in media, design, television and computing
2 - UniversityofGreenwich:provides a range of courses
Canning Town is to become a new district centre,
whilst West Ham, Custom House and West Silvertownare to become local centres, inspiring small-medium
enterprises and construction of new houses and school
The industry (mostly storage and delivery) aroundCody Road is a Strategic Industrial Location; retained
for benet of the local community
Condense it and maximise its longevity, through
increased eency - reliable trucks for example
Canning Town will feed o the growth of Stratford (a
new regional centre) by linking with and compleme-
nting its new up-and-coming industries
The presence of the Olympic media centre alongsideThree Mills, the studios north of the Lower Lea Valley,
Ravensbourne University and countless existingexhibition spaces provide a solid base on which to
instigate the growth of a new creative industry
Develop a high quality waterfront around the Lea
mouth and the newly re-opened Victoria Docksgateway; a world class business and leisure districtcatering for both residents and newcomers
Instigated by the new Siemans Centre, generate new
economic and low carbon, high-tech, and engineeringindustries along the Victoria Docks.
The aim is to phase in up to 30,000 jobs; of varying skillsand salaries, and in varying sectors between 2005 - 2016,with 21,000 of those being for local people
CREATIVE
ENVIRONMENTAL
SMALL/MEDIUM ENTERPRISES
Local secondary schools to take an active role in
encouraging awareness of the new industry and thework they are doing for Canning Town - work expe-
rience schemes, eld trips etc.
Training schemes and courses oered by local higher
education facilities serving as recognized qualications
Research from local higher education facilities feedsinto the new industry
Possible government subsidies and relaxed planning
laws to encourage new industries to set up
Spurred on by improved transport links and a greater
sourceof skilled employment
Initially subsidising new infrastructure schemes, suchas the eco treeBritish Gas towers, would produce
much needed revenue
Existing; manufacturing, warehouse storage, waste disposal
Creative industry: Media, design, computing, graphics
Research/hi tech: biomedical, green sciences, pharmaceuticals
Flagship sustainable development
Oces reserved for small-medium enterprises

The rivercan be navigable by smallboatsfor recrea-tionalpurposeslitt le boats
Wide footpaths, bridgesandcycle lineswill maketraversing the rivereasy
The towers will be turned into air trees; plant coveredstructures that are topped with photovoltaic cells
A partially derelict site, occupied by listed gas towers;owned by British Gas.
British gascan harnessthe sustainable energyproduced from these towersin order to give back tothe community
The air treeswill become venues within the park, thatthemselves, represent a cleaner Canning Town-housing ecological exhibitions that will promotegreen development.
Local businesses can hold recycling fairs whilst localeducational institutions will be encouraged to visitand contribute
Key green spaces and natural stopping points alongthe Lower Lea River Valley, would tie the river coursetogether, and provide an attractive incentive forpeople to walk along its length
