By FRITZ NEIGHBORof the Missoulian

Six years ago football wasn’t the be-all, end-all for Steven Pfahler. He could take it or leave it.

Now, as he and his fellow Montana Grizzlies prepare for an FCS playoff game against South Dakota State, the game is different for Pfahler.

“I didn’t really like football,” the senior tight end says of his high school days. “I loved my coach – Coach (Tim) Racicot was just awesome – but I was planning on throwing the javelin from basically sophomore year on.”

Long Beach State was calling about track and field, and football was on the back burner. But by the time Pfahler had hauled in 24 career touchdown passes at Frenchtown High, the Griz were on the trail along with Washington State and some other schools.

Upheaval on the coaching staff at Long Beach State helped steer Pfahler more toward Missoula. He was told he’d have to put on pounds to play tight end in college, and that hard work was in store.

Steven took some convincing. But then, like his smokejumper brother Sam, he leaped in with both feet.

Not that football is his whole life; far from it. With 14 credits this semester and a goal to graduate in four years this coming spring, school pretty much takes up all of his time.

The Sprinturf on the floor of Washington-Grizzly Stadium is where he gets away.

“This year and last year were just, I don’t know, it’s been a lot of stress,” says Pfahler, who has 20 catches for 270 yards and

three touchdowns for the 11-0 Griz. “I’ve been trying to enjoy my senior year, but school and other things have brought stress.

“Coming to football practice is what’s gotten me through this semester. It gets me through the day.”

Jean Ann Pfahler met

her husband Tim when they both were in Big Timber: She graduated from Sweet Grass High School, Griz coach Bobby Hauck’s alma mater, in 1970; her

English teacher was the late Bob Hauck, Bobby’s father.

Tim Pfahler worked the family ranch. His stint in the Navy and Jean Ann’s nomadic college education – UM, then Montana State, then dental hygiene school in Sheridan, Wyo. – kept them apart for a time.

Now they have raised three boys: Sam, Scott – he played basketball at Montana Tech and is an engineer – and Steven. They seem to be three peas in a pod. They get after it, whether its

hunting or fishing or picking up a blitz or ... roping?

The Pfahlers lived in Big Timber for a time, and then moved to Helena, where the neighbors down the road were the Tryans. By the time the family moved to Frenchtown when Steven was in third grade, the youngest boy was roping with Chase Tryan, who now competes in rodeo for Montana State. Almost needless to say, Steven was good at it.

“I’m thinking if we’d stayed there, we’d be spending $50,000 on a dogging horse, something like that,” said Tim Pfahler.

In Frenchtown, Steven picked up a javelin and started throwing it over 200 feet. He picked up a basketball and helped the Broncs into the State A championship game. And now he’s had the rare effect of changing the Pfahler fall itinerary.

“We were more of a hunting family before,” Jean Ann said. “Now he’s pretty much turned everybody’s life around. Not too much hunting, now.”

On Saturday the Pfahlers will band together to watch the Griz take on the Jackrabbits. Sam’s young daughter Lucy will be there.

“We’ll ask, ‘Where’s Uncle Steve?’ ” Jean Ann says. “And she’ll point out at the field.”

There, big No. 88 could be showing off his excellent hands or sealing a linebacker, helping the Griz win yet another game. Pfahler is among 19 seniors on Montana who’ve won 48 of 53 games in their careers.

“It’s just fun to have him here, fun to have him with the Griz,” says his mom, who along with Tim thought UM football was the perfect fit. “I don’t think he had any idea how much he was going to love it.”

Pfahler weighed around 195 when his senior basketball season ended at Frenchtown. That he weighed 240 pounds six months later, when the Griz opened their 2006 season at Iowa, is nothing short of remarkable.

Not that he ever wants to go through that process again.

“Eating was just a job,” Pfahler said. “My summer was miserable. I basically wanted to throw up the whole time.”

“‘I told him I thought he’d look good at 240,” says Jean Ann, but 240 wasn’t even a rest stop. He kept gaining through the season, until he weighed 265 heading into his first winter conditioning. In a bit of irony, the teammate the Griz call “Beef” – linebacker Shawn Lebsock – started harping on him. Pfahler now stays in the 245-250 range.

It was like everything else he’s done: He sets a goal and gets after it.

“He’s got a plan and he doesn’t stray too far from it,” says his mom. “I’m not sure where he gets it; I don’t know that either one of us are that driven.”

To graduate in four years in exercise science is pretty rare for a football player. His life, not surprisingly, consists of class, practice, film, study, sleep, repeat. With a lot of carbs thrown in.

“These guys are all busy,” Hauck says. “They’ve got school, they’ve got weightlifting, they’ve got treatment, they’ve got practice and they’ve got studying.

“But he’s always been a real focused kid. He was unbelievable in that regard out of high school. He didn’t have to learn how to manage his time. Which is unusual.”

Bozeman

Bozeman native makes quick impressionBy SCOTT JOHNSON

for the Missoulian

Montana linebacker Brock Coyle is providing another reason for Griz fans to be thankful for the future.

Coyle is one of five true freshman contributing for the top-ranked Grizzlies this season. The Bozeman native has 15 tackles in 10 games, including two in last Saturday’s 33-19 victory over Montana State.

Coyle also snared an interception against Portland State. He was well on his way to a lengthy return before a run-in with a teammate inadvertently jarred the ball loose.

“Andrew Swink gave me a nice strip drill,” said Coyle, who recovered the fumble 13 yards later. “He was running beside me and knocked it out. I landed on it. Bottom line is that I coughed it up.”

Cole said he and Swink were able to laugh about the play.

“Absolutely,” he said. “We had a good laugh about it. It was great we got that turnover and for our offense to get back on the field.”

Q: What is something from this

season that you are thankful for? A: As a whole I’m thankful we

had an undefeated regular season. We worked really hard for it. We have our sights set really high.

Q: What is something non-football related you’re thankful

for?A: That I’m at a great university

with a great fan base and it has a great campus. And that I’m in a town like Missoula and I get to spend four more years here.

Q: What’s your favorite part of a Thanksgiving meal?

A: Probably has to be the turkey. You can’t beat a turkey with gravy and mashed potatoes. And the stuffing of course.

Q: What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

A: My plans are to go home and spend the dinner with my family and come back and get ready for South Dakota State.

Q: What was you initial reaction when you found out the Griz would host South Dakota State in the opening round of the playoffs?

A: I was very excited. I knew whoever we were going get that we were in for a challenge. It’s my first year and we’re excited. We’re playing good football.

Q: What do you know about South Dakota State?

A: They seem like a good football team. They seem well-coached. They look like they have some good players.

Q: You’re a Bozeman native who played in your first Brawl of the Wild in your hometown last Saturday. What was that like?

A: It was really exciting. To go home in the stadium where I grew up watching Griz-Cat games was

amazing. I was really happy to be a part of it.

Q: Did you have a lot of people try to get tickets from you?

A: Just my family. I was really happy I was able to get tickets for them.

Q: Had you ever attended any Cat-Griz, or Griz-Cat if you prefer, games before as a fan?

A: I went to both stadiums to watch the games. Always a great atmosphere. It brings out the best of both teams. I loved being a part of that game. It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.

Q: How many games had you seen in person as a fan?

A: I want to say about five.Q: Beside a misguided

appreciation for the colors blue and gold, what’s the biggest difference between your hometown Bozeman and Missoula?

A: I feel Missoula is a an awesome college town and also Missoula doesn’t get as much snow as the Bozeman area, which is also nice until ski season comes around.

Q: Are you a skier or a snowboarder?

A: I grew up skiing. I have skied all my life.

Q: What’s your favorite place to ski in Montana.

A: Big Sky. I’ve skied there since I was a little guy.

Q: Have you ever skied Snowbowl?

A: I used to ski in a lot races. I was up there for some races.

Q: You played running back in high school. If you had the option of playing running back or linebacker for the Griz, which would you prefer?

A: Linebacker hands down. It’s a fun position and I like being on the defensive end rather the offensive side. I like tackling rather than being tackled.

Q: When did you find out that you weren’t going to redshirt this year?

A: At the end of fall camp the coaches told me. I was thrilled and excited. That was big goal of mine to come in and compete and help this team win as much as possible.

Q: Has the transition from high school to college been easier than you expected?

A: The speed of the game and physical aspect has definitely increased, but you learn that it’s the same game you’ve been playing for the past four years. With good preparation and hard work, it’s been a good transition.

Q: You were a second-team, all-state selection at kicker during your junior year in high school. Did you kick as a senior?

A: I did, yeah. I think I was all-state second team as a senior too, but I can’t remember.

Q: Could you be counted on to fill in if Griz kicker Brody McKnight was unable to perform

Head coach Bobby Hauck, the Big Sky’s coach of the year, guided his Grizzlies to a seventh straight playoff appearance. The Jackrabbits are making just their second ever playoff appearance. I have a sneaky suspicion Hauck is in the running for the Eddie Robinson Award too.

Unless there’s a reincarnation of former Jacks’ kicker Adam Vinatieri on this year’s squad then the special teams nod goes to Montana in a big way. By the way, Vinatieri’s great-great grandfather Felix Vinatieri served as Gen. George Armstrong Custer’s bandmaster, though he was spared from the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The Jackrabbits have the best pass efficiency defense in the nation and are No. 5 in yards allowed. I don’t foresee the Griz throwing it a bunch against these guys, so we’ll get to see how they are as run-stoppers.

First-team all-Missouri Valley Conference linebacker Derek Domino makes offensive players fall flat (he leads SDSU with 87 tackles), but so does first-team all-Big Sky ’backer Shawn Lebsock, whose 79 stops leads UM.

Not only does SDSU have Buck Buchanan candidate Danny Batten, but this front has gone up against some of the top-ranked rushing attacks in the country: Southern Illinois (4th), North Dakota State (8th), Northern Iowa (13th) and Cal Poly (19th).

Marc Mariani could have been the Big Sky Conference offensive MVP, but wasn’t. He had yet another two-TD game last week against the Cats. Mariani is third in the nation in yards per reception (19.6). That’s almost a fifth of the football field every time he catches the ball.

If you look at the eight FCS playoff games this weekend, only this one matches up two of the nation’s top 10 backs. It’s SDSU’s Kyle Minett (1,173 yards; 14 TDs) vs. UM’s Chase Reynolds (1,159 yards; 15 TDs). It’s too tough to tell.

South Dakota State and Montana both use the two-headed quarterback system. The Jackrabbits start freshman Thomas O’Brien, while senior Ryan Crawford waits in the wings. Juniors Andrew Selle and Justin Roper, the fifth-most efficient passers in the FCS, give the Grizzlies the better gunslingers though.

The big guys up front love to eat and it appears as though Montana’s front five will get some home-cooking this Thanksgiving weekend. South Dakota State’s big uglies will have to eat their cranberry sauce out of a to-go can.

By NICK LOCKRIDGEof the Missoulian

Congratulations, Fritz. There I said it. Or at least I typed

it, which is easier than telling the guy to his face. The Neighbor-ator (like Terminator) destroyed the picks column competition this season and thus earned the title as the Missoulian’s best fooball prognosticator – Fritz’s first win since 2006, which was the last year he and Rial Cummings went cranium-to-cranium.

Fritz misfired on only eight picks this fall. That’s pretty impressive, especially when you consider the dude was seeing Tweety Birds seven weeks ago when he was hit in the head by a wayward pigskin after the Cal Poly game at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Don’t believe me? Check out the Fritz Blitz video online to see for yourself.

Neighbor has been on fire since getting nailed in the noggin. He’s picked only four games wrong (24-4 overall) since then, while last year’s winner Bill Speltz went 23-5 over that same span to recover from an abysmal 24-7 start. Our rookie bookie Michael Heinbach went 22-6 down the stretch and finished second. On the other hand, I went 20-8 since

hitting Fritz with the football, err, I mean since he was hit.

I’m now 0-for-3 in years that I’ve competed in the picks column. My inability to correctly judge Portland State’s football program – as well as picking against the Griz a few times – has been my downfall. After a second straight soul-searching journey to Wibaux, I believe I’ll get it right next year.

Perhaps somebody will hit me in the head with a football. Any takers?

Something tells me Fritz is at the front of that line, too.

That wraps up this year’s edition of “How We See the Sky.” Without further ado, here are the postseason picks we’ve included just for fun. Happy Thanksgiving Griz Nation. Enjoy the playoffs.

The picksn No. 11 South Dakota State at No.

3 Montana: The Jackrabbits and Griz have some memorable regular season meetings. Now they meet for the first time in the playoffs. This one might not be so memorable for South Dakota State.

fritz: Griz 30, SoDak St. 10. Michael: Griz 24, SoDak St. 13. Nick: Griz 34, SoDak St. 17. Bill: Griz 28, SoDak St. 21.

n No. 13 eastern Washington at No. 12 Stephen f. Austin: I don’t think I’m alone on this, but I think Eastern received a good draw here. Maybe I just want to see another barnburner between EWU and UM, or a rematch of Taiwan Jones and Chase Reynolds. Can you blame me?

fritz: EWU 44, SFA 40. Michael: SFA 28, EWU 21. Nick: EWU 23, SFA 17. Bill: EWU 38, SFA 35

n No. 9 elon at No. 4 richmond: The defending national champs begin their march toward another title game appearance as they welcome in Elon University (Hint: it’s in Elon, North Carolina). If it sounds like a mismatch, that’s because it is.

fritz: Spiders 22, Elon 20. Michael: Spiders 30, Elon 12. Nick: Spiders 40, Elon 16. Bill: Spiders 21, Elon 10.

n No. 7 South Carolina State at No. 5 Appalachian State: South Carolina State is one of four teams in the FCS playoffs with only one loss on their record. But the Bulldogs didn’t have a fun trip to Boone, N.C., last year when they lost in the first round.

fritz: App State 38, SC State 22. Michael: App State 35, SC State 21. Nick: App State 37, SC State 13. Bill: App State 35, SC State 31.

n No. 17 holy Cross at No. 2 Villanova: Holy smokes this would be a huge upset if Holy Cross were to pull this one off. The Wildcats are a legitimate title contender. Holy Cross is a legitimate Brain Bowl contestant, though it did lose to Brown and Bucknell earlier this year.

fritz: Nova 48, Holy Cross 21. Michael: Nova 34, Holy Cross 12. Nick: Nova 46, Holy Cross 17. Bill: Nova 39, Holy Cross 24.

n No. 10 New hampshire at No. 8 McNeese State: I don’t know the Cowboys fanbase all that well, so I better tread lightly here, but I just find it funny how they say Mac-Neese rather than McNeese. That said ...

fritz: Mac-Neese 27, UNH 17. Michael: UNH 19, Mac-Neese 17. Nick: UNH 31, Mac-Neese 30. Bill: Mac-Neese 41, UNH 30.

n No. 19 eastern Illinois at No. 1 Southern Illinois: Anybody else confused as to which direction this game is going? That’s what I thought. I thought I saw Bill Speltz wearing a Salukis hat the other day, maybe he can help anybody that gets lost.

fritz: Salukis 33, EIU 16. Michael: Salukis 42, EIU 21. Nick: Salukis 43, EIU 13. Bill: Salukis 24, EIU 17.

n No. 15 Weber State at No. 6 William & Mary: The Big Sky Conference should be proud of getting three teams in the FCS playoffs. But as the only four-loss team in the field, Weber doesn’t appear to have the backing from our office like it did from the Big Sky’s.

fritz: Weber 27, Bill ’n Mary 14. Michael: Bill ’n Mary 24, Weber 21. Nick: Bill ’n Mary 36, Weber 23. Bill: Bill ’n Mary 31, Weber 21.

GRIZZLY GAME DAY

VISIT US IN THE BITTERROOT!

has also been singular. Hauck would like to ban the term, “over-training,” but Pfahler tends to bring it back into the vernacular.

“It applies to him,” Hauck said. “You have to keep an eye on him so he doesn’t overdo it.”

Only one thing has slowed

Pfahler, and that was a bout with the H1N1 virus in early November. He was for once inert, while around him was a flurry of anti-bacterial wipe-downs and roommate quarantines (quarterback Andrew Selle was quickly, and temporarily, relocated).

“My mom,” he says. “She was just in there every night cooking for me. Two or three trips from Frenchtown to Missoula a day. I just hung out in my chair and didn’t move.”

It gave him time to think, perhaps. His only stated regret about his career at UM is the

lack of family time. If he had more time, he says, he’d have learned to fly a helicopter: Tim is a “retired” inspector pilot. If he could, he’d spend more time with his brothers and their kids.

“I’m kind of spoiled,” he adds. “My dad would do anything for me, and he just loves the football, and loves trying to be part of everything. I’ve got it pretty good.”

By extension, so do the Griz. They struggled mightily in Pfahler’s absence at Idaho State, needing a last-second field goal to beat the then-winless Bengals. Call it coincidence if you like.

“I didn’t think it was going to be that exciting of a game,” he said with a laugh. “But I just really wished I could’ve been there with the team, celebrating.”

All this from a guy who didn’t care for football, and whose first experience with a Griz-Cat game came in 2006 – when he played in it.

Now he’s been in four of them, all wins. He’s built friendships with the Palmer twins, and

Lebsock, and Selle.“The team joke is we’re Tony

Romo and Jason Whitten,” said Pfahler of his QB housemate. “I don’t know what that’s about.”

Then came a sobering thought.

“We had our senior banquet the other day, and yesterday we had our team banquet,” he said Monday. “If you have four more games or one more game, it’s coming to an end pretty quick.”

What will he do? Study some more, perhaps. Train for a possible shot in the NFL. “If I stay healthy and things go right, we’ll see what happens,” Pfahler says.

The trick is to enjoy the moment, even if it’s 7-on-7 or “inside zone.” He’s done that. And then soon it’ll be Saturday, the day Pfahler loves the most.

“It never gets old, running out of the tunnel,” he says. “It actually gets better and better, every time.”

his kicking duties?A: You know, Brody is an

unbelievable kicker. If we lost him to an injury, Russell Schey is a good backup.

Q: (interrupting) OK, my bad. No disrespect intended for Russell. Let’s say both of them suddenly had torn hamstrings or something.

A: I haven’t kicked since senior season. I played soccer for a good eight years. I guess if they needed me I could go in and do the best I could possibly do.

Q: Speaking as a former kicker, how impressive was it when UM student Matthew Brenner kicked two 45-yard field goals to win $10,000?

A: It’s pretty cool. Watching the fan come down out of the stands to make those kicks was impressive. To do that with all that pressure and money at stake is impressive.

Q: Has anyone ever told

you your name sounds like you should be an athlete?

A: No, no one has.Q: You’re name totally

sounds like someone who plays linebacker.

A: That’s good. I wouldn’t want it to sound like any other position.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant in Bozeman?

A: Montana Ale Works. Q: What’s your favorite

class?A: Anthropology.Q: What do you like to do in

your free time?A: I’ve grown up in Montana,

so I’ve grown up hunting and fishing. I like to go out in the woods hunting and getting on the river fly fishing.

Q: If you had access to a time machine, what would you do with it?

A: I would hold on to it until I absolutely need to use it.

Q: What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

A: I see myself in a career that I love with a family that I love.
