  4. 4. I n accordance with the strategic rel- evance of Dakar as regional hub for the Group network, Grimaldi Senegal is consolidating its position in the Coun- try investing in a 6,000 sqm area of land located in the Dakar port-city area. The Groups local subsidiary is planning to build new offices on the premises, and to create a logistics centre for the trucking activity, as well as offering an off-dock container depot. In order to guarantee the high standards required to serve all Grimaldi lines on the Atlantic routes with 200 ship calls per annum, Grimaldi Senegal is also manag- ing the only licensed car park area in the port. The area has a surface of 7,500 sqm, completely fenced and secured, in order to ensure damage-free handling solutions for both cargo transhipped for other west Afri- can destinations, and the import of vehicles bound for the Senegalese market. Furthermore, in order to guarantee high- quality standards of services to the cus- tomers, Grimaldi Senegal is operating its own haulage to door with a fleet which also includes a side-lifter trailer equipped with 40 tons lifting capacity to allow deliveries at any premises. New terminal area and logistics services in Senegal Investments carried out to widen further both Dakar hub role and services for the local market With the aim to meet shippers re- quests for more frequent sailings from Europe to key West African desti- nations, Grimaldi has taken the decision to upgrade its Central Express Service which, until the end of 2008, was served by five large Ro/Ro multipurpose vessels. From early 2009, this service is being strengthened and improved through the introduction of a sixth Ro/Ro mul- tipurpose vessel which is replacing a dedicated car carrier. This development will mark an increase in cargo intake ca- pacity to all the destinations covered by the service while frequency is being in- creased from 8 to 6 days. Meanwhile, the service has recently re- sumed calling at Abidjan, in Ivory Coast marking a return to this important desti- nation, offering a regular, fast and direct access to European markets for Ivorian exporters. Once all the new developments are intro- duced in early 2009, the result will be a market leading combined Multipurpose Ro/Ro service well suited also for project cargo and containers, offering a direct sailing every six days from Northern Eu- rope to Lom, Cotonou, Lagos, Tema and Abidjan, thus allowing shippers to plan more effectively their shipments. 6. 6. 9GNEWS Atlantic trades Despite the car industry downturn, the Port of Setubal (Por- tugal) confirmed that in 2009 over 100 calls were made by Grimaldi vessels. The relationship between the Grimaldi Group and the Portu- guese port began in the 1980s, when the Grimaldi roll on/roll off services started developing. Today the Group transports cars, vans and all types of rolling cargo plus containers. Setubal is approximately 50km south of Lisbon and is a very important link between Northern Europe and the Mediterra- nean. In fact, nowadays the Groups ships call at this port with two regular liner operations, the EuroAegean and the Euro- Med services. The first is a twice-a-week service dedicated to the transport of new cars, vans and all types of rolling and static cargo on mafis. Setubal is served southbound from the ports of South- ampton, Flushing, Hamburg, Antwerp and Portbury (Bristol). After Setubal, vessels call at Valencia, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Salerno, Palermo, Piraeus, Gemlik, Yenikoy, Alexandria, Bei- rut, Tripoli, Tartous, Lattakia, Salerno, Valencia. Eight Pure Car Truck Carrier Vessels are deployed on this bi-weekly service. The ro/ro & container service called Euro-Med serves Setu- bal northbound from Civitavecchia, Salerno, Piraeus, Izmir, Ashdod, Limassol, Alexandria, Salerno. Vessels then continue their voyage to Portbury, Cork, Esbjerg, Wallhamn, Antwerp, Southampton and back to the Mediterranean. The Grimaldi Group also regularly calls at the port of Lisbon with the North Europe/West African and the North Europe/ South American services. Last January Grimaldi Senegal inau- gurated its new head office building in Dakar. It is situated in the Colobane area of the capital, with a surface of 600 square meters split over two levels, ac- commodating approximately 50 employ- ees plus approximately 50 permanent dockers working in the port. The rest of the 6,000-square meter area purchased in 2009 will most likely be em- ployed as a centre for offdock services such as door-to-door container distribu- tion, workshops and container depots, etc. Grimaldi Senegal SA acts as a maritime agency, container forwarder and contain- er road haulage operator. The company also manages also a container yard and a car park in the port of Dakar. Today almost all Grimaldis Atlantic network routes call at Dakar linking the routes of North and South America with West Africa, the three liner services linking North Europe with West Africa (Northern, Central, and Southern Ex- press Services) and finally the service linking North Europe to South America. In 2009, the Grimaldi Group reached the record of 246 calls at Dakar and expects to reach the same number of calls dur- ing 2010. Over 100 calls at Setubal New head offices for Grimaldi Senegal
