What’s university like?University is for everyone.

* Good Universities Guide, five-star rating for overall educational experience. Griffith is ranked second in Australia for student experience in the latest Student Experience Survey National Report.

^ Based on Learning and Teaching results from the Department of Education and Training.

Is it different to school?

Lectures University is very different to school. Lectures are usually very large groups, usually non-interactive where you cover all the requirements of each course (or subject).

TutorialsYour lecture groups are broken into small classes where you will get to interact with other students through group work and ask your tutor questions. You will get guidance on how to complete your assessments.

You will get to meet like-minded people as you have all chosen to do the same degree and courses. Many students form lifelong friendships during their university years.

It’s a great experience

We rank amongst the best universities in the world, which might be why our students often tell us in surveys that they have a great time studying at Griffith*.

WorkloadIt’s up to you to set your own schedule to ensure you can attend all classes and get the work done. No-one will chase you for work if you have not completed it on time.

Why choose Griffith?

Your future world of work Future work opportunities will be increasingly affected by automation, globalisation and collaboration. To make sure you can thrive in the future world of work, you will need a set of transferrable skills.

So what do we mean by transferrable skills? It means developing skills that are portable across jobs. Transferrable skills include: communication skills, digital literacy, writing skills, problem solving, time management, organisational skills, research skills, creativity, team work, planning, and project management.

Our skills are more portable than we realise. To future-proof your career you need to make good choices that will give you options—what subjects you study at school, what courses you take at university, and what first job you apply for will set you on the right path.

How to choose your Year 11 and 12 subjects

Step 1:Ask yourself some important questions

• What are my favourite subjects now?

• Are there subjects that I do particularly well in?

• What subjects can I choose for Grade 11 and 12 that are in complementary areas?

• What are my interests outside of school?

• Do I have an ideal job in mind, or am I thinking more of a general area I’d like to work in? Some degrees lead to a specific job—for example, teacher, architect, and doctor. If you don’t have a specific job in mind, it might be a good idea to study a more general degree, like science or business.

Step 2:Research careers and industries

Do you have an idea of what your dream job might be? You can talk to your parents, relatives, guidance counsellor, friends and teachers to find out where your interests and skills could lead you.

You can search the following sites to get an idea of what job or industry you might enjoy working in and discover what sort of qualifications you might need:

• myfuture (myfuture.edu.au)• Job Outlook ( joboutlook.gov.au)

And remember, you can still keep your options open. Careers and industries change all the time—your future job might be something that hasn’t even been invented yet.

Step 3: Investigate degree options

Think about what you want to study and find out what prerequisites apply before you select your subjects.

• What prerequisite subjects are required?

• What assumed knowledge or recommended study would be useful for certain degrees?

• What future careers can these degrees lead to?

If you change your mind just before you apply for university, that’s ok—there’s always bridging programs and opportunities to upgrade or change from one degree to another even after you finish school and start at university.

Year 10 is a great time to start thinking about university and your career. It’s ok if you’re not sure what you want to do yet, but thinking about your interests and doing some research into possible careers and degrees can help you prepare for life after school. You’ve got a while to make some final decisions. Remember, it’s common for people to change careers throughout their lifetime.

All information is correct as at May 2018 but is subject to change. Visit degrees.griffith.edu.au for the most up-to-date information.

Rather than being specific to a career, they are transferable across a range of different jobs. You can use these clusters to help you work out what career path you might take.

The My Path future job clusters were developed by the Institute for Working Futures (IWF) and the Centre for Leadership Advantage (CLA) in partnership with the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). Visit qtac.edu.au/atar-my-path/my-path for more information.

How does Georgina care?

Medicine has always fascinated Georgina. She says she’s filled with wonder when she contemplates how complex humans are. It’s that fascination that led her to pursue a medical career through Griffith. ‘I love the intimacy of my cohort, their willingness to share and enter into discussions, and I am also impressed that our lecturers are highly engaged and approachable. This makes seeking assistance and forming networks effortless and enjoyable.’ Georgina recommends building a great support network and connecting with staff and peers for opportunities.

Thomas Spalding began his Criminology and Information Technology double degree in 2017. ‘Originally I chose criminology because I had an interest in the field but while studying I thought I might brush up on IT because cybercrime has a lot of potential for jobs.’ Thomas also says that the double degree has exceeded his expectations from both an academic and a social perspective. He hopes to work in fraud and cybercrime detection for a private institution before eventually moving into a role with the Australian Federal Police.

Sheyanne Frisby has always had an interest in protecting rivers and oceans, having grown up in a small coastal town. ‘During high school I found my passion for science and my eagerness for understanding how things work. After discovering Griffith had a degree in environmental engineering and science I decided that it was the perfect degree for me.’ During her degree Sheyanne has been overwhelmed by the support from lecturers and academic staff. ‘They truly care about each student and want to see you do well and achieve your goals.’

University terms

There are a lot of new terms used when talking about university. Here are some of the most common:

Admissions pathwayA pathway program is a stepping stone to your desired degree. You might need to complete a pathway program if you don’t get the ATAR for your preferred degree.

Assumed knowledgeThe minimum level of achievement in a senior subject considered necessary for successful first year tertiary study. Assumed knowledge is optional.

ATARAustralian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) is the standard measure of overall school achievement used by all other states and territories. Queensland will also use the ATAR for tertiary admissions from 2021. It is a rank indicating a student’s position overall relative to other students. The ATAR is expressed on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 (highest) down to 0, in increments of 0.05.

Bachelor degree Also known as an undergraduate degree. A tertiary qualification awarded for the first level of study undertaken at university, typically requiring three to four years of full-time study.

Experience based entrySome degrees, in particular those offered at the Queensland Conservatorium, require applicants to attend an audition and/or submit a folio of work. Specific information about these requirements is available at degrees.griffith.edu.au

Full-time Just like a full-time job, you can finish your degree in the fastest time possible. Full-time is a bit different for each degree but is 75 per cent or more of the standard full-time load for a degree. An academic full-time load is eight courses per trimester in most degrees.

Major A major is an area of specialised study within a degree. A major may be a formal requirement of a degree.

Part-time Just like a part-time job you don’t have to study full-time because you may need to do other things while you study. Enrolment in less than 75 per cent of the standard full-time load is defined as part-time.

PrerequisiteA senior subject that you must complete and achieve a specified result in before you are considered for entry. English is a prerequisite for all Griffith degrees, and some of our degrees have additional prerequisites.

Recommended studyA senior subject we recommend you study to help you understand content before starting your tertiary studies. If you haven’t studied these subjects and want to gain this knowledge, you can take one of our bridging courses. Recommended study is optional.

TrimesterMost universities have two semesters but at Griffith we have three. This means you may be able to choose to do courses (subjects) in either two or three trimesters. If you study in the third trimester, you may be able to finish your degree quicker and get out into the world of work.

UndergraduateAll bachelor degrees are called undergraduate degrees and you will be called an undergraduate student.

Frequently asked questions

Visit griffith.edu.au/ask-us for more frequently asked questions, or phone 1800 677 728 to talk to our expert staff.

What if I don’t get the score I need for my preferred degree? If you don’t achieve the selection rank needed for your preferred degree, you may choose to study a different degree that you do meet the entry requirements for, then upgrade to your preferred degree after a year of study at university. You could also choose to complete a program through Griffith College to be guaranteed direct entry into a range of related Griffith degrees.

What if I don’t meet the prerequisites for my preferred degree? If you haven’t studied the prerequisite subjects for a degree, or studied them but didn’t pass, you may be able to complete a bridging or preparatory course at Griffith University, Griffith College or a private provider.

What if I haven’t studied subjects listed as assumed knowledge? If you haven’t studied these subjects, you may still get in to your preferred degree but may find your study easier if you have some understanding of these subjects. If you haven’t studied these subjects and want to gain this knowledge, you can take one of our bridging courses.

What if I change my mind about what I want to study after I’ve started my degree? If you change your mind about what you want to study, or decide you don’t like your degree, you may be able to apply for an internal transfer to change to a different Griffith degree.

How much time does university study take?Generally, students have three hours of scheduled classes per course per week, which may include lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. This means that full-time students spend around 12 hours on campus each week. Students are also expected to commit additional time to their studies outside of class to complete course-related activities such as assignments and weekly readings.
