EXPLANATIONS

LOADING POINT

The loading point of a fly rod helps describethe relative stiffness of the blank and givesan indication of how much effort is requiredto flex the blank in casting. We split this in tothree descriptions, low, medium and high.

A low loading point rod with relatively lowstiffness indicates general suitability for closerange tactics and anglers who prefer aneasier more relaxed casting stroke. A highloading point would be used to refer to a rodwith relatively high stiffness and indicates arod more suitable to long range tactics andgenerally a more powerful casting stroke.

ROD STOP

In general the more powerful and stifferthe rod, the harder we need to stop the rodto transfer energy to the fly line. We describerod stop as light, moderate and positive toindicate its optimum usage.

Most rods require a moderate stop as thissuits the vast majority of casting styles andapplications. However, on our very highestperforming models a more positive stophelps unleash the full potential of thesevery fast and powerful designs.

RECOVERY RATE

This refers to how quickly the rod recoversto straight from its deflected position duringcasting. Recovery rate is influenced both bythe taper design and the type of material used.Our descriptions of low, moderate and rapidcan help the angler get a sense of the rod’s‘tempo’ or ‘cycle time’, this indicates if therod responds best to a slow, smooth castingstroke or a quicker, more precise stroke.

FLEX CHARACTERISTICS

Split into three categories, this gives anindication of the nature in which the rod bends,although there are many variables inbetween,in its most basic form, rod flex can be splitinto ‘through’, ‘middle to tip’ and ‘tip’.

From the four piece blank – built to our specification, to theshape of the handle, we design the lot. The rod actions aretested and ‘tweaked’ until our developers are 100% happy withthem, then the blanks are tested rigorously on our test rig. Eachmodel then undergoes extensive testing ‘on the water’ with ourconsultants across the globe. Only after we are happy with theresults of all of this development and testing do we offer the rodsto you, the customer. G-TEC 11’ COMPACT FLOAT

Here at Greys we are always looking for gaps in the rod market. We discovereda huge void when it comes to a light line float rod that stores away compactlyenough for the travelling angler and yet provides a decent action. This slim,lightweight rod has a progressive action, which is capable of casting wagglersa long way, but it also has a lovely forgiving anti-lock nature when put underpressure, so it can deal with light lines and small hooks.

During extensive field-testing the 11ft Compact accounted for some huge catchesof carp up to nearly 20lbs! This was when using a maximum recommended 6lbmain line with a 5lb hook length – combined with pellet waggler tactics. It alsoperformed brilliantly with its minimum 2lb trace rating and smaller hooks whenused under more difficult conditions. Most short section travel rods that breakdown compactly enough to store in the boot of a car, or take on an aeroplane,have very stiff actions when fully assembled. But the G-Tec 11ft Compact designis different. It has a similar action to many two or three piece float rods. Thismeans it’s equally at home casting light wagglers and stick floats as it is tolaunching out loaded floats like pellet wagglers up to 5g.

G-TEC FLOAT RODS

The 11ft Compact Float Rod combines superb casting and fish playingaction with a truly amazing anti-lock and lightweight nature. It breaks downcompactly into 4 pieces for easy storage, or it can be pre-rigged up in alonger 2 section format.

The G-Tec 13ft Float rod is a versatile all-rounder, aimed at light to mediumstrength lines and smaller hooks, when a degree of finesse is called for onrivers, lakes or canals. In situations where more casting and fish playingbackbone is required, the 13ft Power Float version is perfect for targetingbig commercial fishery weights or larger fish, also for launching out heavywagglers and controlling business-like river floats.

With G-Tec Feeder Rods all the carbon quivertips are interchangeable, so thesehighly sensitive bite indicators can be switched between any rods in the range.Additional quivertips can also be purchased to customise a rod, making it evenmore versatile. 0.5oz, 0.75oz, 1oz, 2oz, 3oz, 4oz, 5oz and 6oz tips are available,while the heaviest 5oz and 6oz versions have enlarged guides to allow easypassage of shock leader knots.

The shortest rod is the 9ft 6in Bomb design, which comes supplied with 1/2oz,3/4oz and 1oz push-in quivertips. Wind back the clock to October 2007, whenwe joined together some of the finest Pikeangling brains in Europe, mixed them up withPerch, Zander and predator professionals,threw them all into a room with our very ownCAD engineering and tooling team and waited.You would have witnessed the conceptualbirth of our Prowla range rods, luggage,tools, and terminal tackle.

Prowla’s subsequent launch in September2009 was greeted with open arms and atsunami of interest and support. Not surprisinglythis followed a huge fish for television andradio star Chris Tarrant, who banked hisPB 30lb 2oz Pike while fishing with Greysconsultant John Horsey. Later in the yearJohn banked his own specimens of 30lb9oz and a PB of 33lb 8oz, all fish fallingto Prowla Bait and Boat rods.

Of course we don’t profess to know everythingthere is to know about predator fishing – it’sdifficult to reinvent the wheel. But we thinkwe’ve done a pretty good job! Platinum Jerk Bait is a versatile range of three rods that cover a broad rangeof jerkbait fishing. All are built on high modulus blanks with sensitive tips togive life to your lures, without compromising on strength and possessingenough power to let you handle bigger predators. The extra SIC braid safeguides and new guide spacing keep braid away from the blank when playinga fish and improve casting performance.

Platinum Jerk Light is ideal for casting lures up to 50g. It’s sensitive in thetip without compromising on strength and hook setting ability and possessesenough power to let you handle bigger predators. It will handle 20-40lb braidand is so light you will feel as if you are fishing with a wand.

The Jerk Medium has a slightly longer butt that balances the rod in yourhand and lets you grasp the end when punching out heavier baits. It’s bestsuited for casting weights up to 80g and has a braid rating of 30-50lb.

PROWLA DEAD BAIT POP UP FLOAT

Unlike conventional floater sticks which are made from balsa woodand need to be forced into your dead bait, Prowla Dead Bait Pop-Up Floats feature a threaded point enabling you to easily screwthem into thawed or even semi-frozen baits, allowing you to changepresentation and critically balance your dead baits. WHAT CAN IT CAST?With so many different lengths and test curves available,choosing a carp rod can be a real minefield. To makethings easier for you, we’ve provided a few guidelinesthat should help you make the correct choice.

During recent years there has been a trend towards morepowerful test curves. This probably reflects the fact thatcarp are getting bigger! This, coupled with the introductionof PVA bags and Method feeders, means that someanglers require that extra ‘punch’ from their carp rods.This is due to the Method feeder and bag’s less thanaero-dynamic shapes.

While you read this, please remember these are onlyguidelines and that length and test curve choice will alwaysremain a personal one. Both feel and comfort will play abig part – what suits one angler will not always be rightfor another. For example, some of the more extreme rodlengths and test curves require a good casting technique,to compress the blank and release its full potential.

With this in mind, some anglers prefer lower test curvesto gain maximum feel during the fight. Whatever model,length or test curve, you can be sure that it’s been tried andtested by our scientists, design engineers, and our GreysCarp Academy members. That is why it carries the Greysname and the Greys Worldwide Extended Warranty.

2.5lb This test curve is ideal for fishing short to mediumrange. When fishing at close range a softer 2.5lb rod willabsorb the lunges of a fighting fish. This also meansexcellent casting accuracy, especially with short-rangebaits. Don’t be deceived though, all our 2.5lb test curvecarp rods have good reserves of power in the butt section,should it be needed.

While this test curve lends itself superbly for playing fish,it’s not ideal for casting out large Method feeders, or PVAbags. This is because the rod can easily be bottomed out(over stretched) under these high compression loads. Aswell as being a great medium-range fishing rod, this testcurve is a popular choice for surface fishing.

2.75lb A very popular test curve that’s able to cope with amultitude of situations. Ideal for fishing either single leads,or small Method feeders and PVA bags. In the right handsthese rods are still capable of 100 yards plus, yet are alsogreat fish players close into the bank.

You can do all this without the fear of a high hook pull rate.A 2.75lb carp rod is a truly versatile tool, but particularlywell suited to medium to long-range fishing.

3lb Out of all our test curves, this is now the most popularin our range. Excellent reserves of power make fishing atrange no problem, whether it’s single leads or a PVA bag.Don’t be shy about really winding these rods up to getinto the butt section to release the power.

Like the 2.75lb, our 3lb test curves are particularly wellsuited to medium-long fishing but with a touch more powerfor punching out baits, or setting the hook at range shouldthe need arise. In the right hands, and with the correct set-up, distances of over 130 yards can easily be achieved.

3.25lb By popular demand we have now developed a 3.25lbtest curve which is well suited to long range work or whenconditions require the use of big PVA bags and sticks. Thishighly versatile addition to the range is sure to find its fansand is often a popular choice for anglers looking for one setof rods to cover both UK and European fishing demands.

3.5lb This test curve is ideal for the angler who wants tofish big baits and bags, at the limits of their casting ability.When using higher test curves like this, slightly more carewill need to be taken while playing fish under the rod tip.With the correct casting styles and good compression,distances of 150 yards+ can be achieved. During testingwe have seen recorded distances of well in excess of 200yards using some of the 13ft Greys models. The extrapower of these rods will be well appreciated by anglerslooking to set hooks well at range.

SHOCK LEADER GUIDEAs a guide always use the 10x safety rule for your shockleaders, so for example, for a 3oz lead use a 30lb shockleader, 4oz lead 40lb shock leader etc. This will result infewer crack-offs when striving for that extra distance.

We believe that the X-FliteTM+ landing net is one of the best landing netsavailable. Featuring our patented Max LockTM spreader block, this ingeniousdesign makes both assembly and breaking down the net easier than everbefore. It’s traditional to link chestwaders with flyfishing when you often need to get out intothe current to present your fly to its ultimateadvantage. But, in reality, chestwaders arevital kit for any fisherman fly, lure, bait or sea.If you’re long trotting, getting out into theflow makes the mending of the line so mucheasier. If you’re touch legering, gettingdirectly upstream of the bait gives you a farbetter angle, far more positive bite indication.

If you’re lure fishing for pike, then wadingthe gravels allows you to cast into the reed-fringed bay or the far side of the lily pads.If you’re bass fishing in the surf, how canyou possibly restrict yourself to the beach?

Even if you find yourself on the bank,chestwaders are invaluable in foul weather.Put on a good waterproof jacket, hood andchestwaders and you are untouchable,impervious to the storms.
