Get toys to her now, and she’ll have them ready for pick up at the picnic on Sunday, Sept. 18. She’ll also be doing toy repair for out-of-town hound owners at the picnic. If you’re local and bring injuried stuffies to the picnic, she’ll arrange to get them to you via a Meet and Greet near you. Invest in a 401( Grey ) program Because a greyhound can’t run forever People can save for retirement. But greyhounds aren’t so lucky. It’s why we’ve created 401(Grey). It’s a foster dog sponsorship program that helps cover the cost of getting retired racers ready for adoption. Why we need your help Our $230 adoption fee rarely covers the total cost of veterinary ser- vices, food, monthly medications and other costs associated with getting a hound ready for adoption. Also, more hounds eight and older are be- ing returned. They require more intensive vet care than new retirees and often wait longer in foster care for new homes. When they are adopted by established adopters there is no charge to encourage their adoption, so they often cost twice as much to rehome. Here’s how 401(Grey) works n Make either a $50 donation or sign up for monthly payroll deduc- tion in whatever amount works for you. n Pick a foster dog to sponsor, or let us pick one for you. n Your name appears with the hound’s biography/photo on the Avail- able Dogs page of our website. n You’ll be thanked on our adopter Yahoo list, Facebook page, news- letter and events. Your help matters As a hound’s sponsor, you can follow its journey to adoption with a well-deserved sense of involvement. We’ll send you background in- formation about the dog and you can monitor its progress through its blogs. When your dog is adopted, we’ll let you know and share informa- tion about your sponsorship with the adopters. As a 401(Grey) sponsor, you will receive charitable donation documentation in December to include with your income tax. Why invest in 401(Grey)? n You can’t foster but want to help adoptable dogs. n In memory of a pet or person who has died. n To commemorate a hound’s birthday or gotcha day. n As a gift for someone who has everything. n To celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, gradua- tions, etc. n A dog’s racing or call name has special meaning for you. n The foster is a littermate or related to one of your dogs. n An adoptable hound tugs at your heartstrings, but you’re not in a position to adopt it. n It’s the right thing to do. Just ask your hound. In addition to bidding in the silent and live auctions, this year’s picnic will include bag auctions. Ticket sales will help us reach our $4,000 goal. 401 ( Grey ) GREY HOUNDS Can’t Run Forever

President’s column

For the love of senior houndsGPA/N is committed to 10

percent of adop-tions being hounds eight and older. Adopting a senior is rewarding because they appreciate the chance to live out their lives in loving homes. Since Jan. 1, adopters like you

have opened your homes to eight hounds.

The cost of caringOur commitment to seniors has

a greater financial cost than prep-ping fresh track dogs for adoption.

That’s because they need more vet care. Typical cost for a senior: n Dental $190.80n Basic + senior blood panel $94.65n Heartworm test $27.34n Fecal $18.54n Physical $40.00TOTAL $371.33

Senior IncentivesTo encourage

senior adoptions, we charge no fee to previous GPA/N adopters.

Senior adopt-ers also can take advantage of our Senior Incentive program. It in-cludes financial support for adopt-ers of older hounds. (gpanashville.org/seniors.php.)

A senior is a great addition to a family.

Not able to adopt a senior now? Make a donation to Senior Incen-tives. It’s tax deductible and the right thing to do.

SARA BROWING, DVM

All dogs, regardless of age, sex or if they live in or outdoors, are susceptible to heartworms. They are transmitted when a mosquito carrying the heart-worm larvae bites a dog. The larvae

grow, de-velop and mi-grate through blood vessels. As mature adults, they end up in the vessels of the heart and lungs and can

cause life-threatening damage. Also, they produce baby worms which enter the blood stream.

Prevention on a year-round, con-sistent schedule is a must to prevent heartworm infection and is both safer and more economical than treatment. Talk with your veterinarian to see which choice in prevention is right for you and your hound. Heartworm preventa-tives kill the worms, and prevent infec-tion and re-infection. The most com-mon preventions are given monthly, and include both eaten and topically applied medications.

Prevention, not treatmentDogs with heartworm infections can

show no symptoms, or can present

with lung, heart, or kidney problems. Symptoms range from coughing, exer-cise intolerance to difficulty breathing. Infection is detected with a blood test.

Treatment for an adult heartworm infection can be difficult and is costly; the more severe the infection, the greater the chance of complications and even death. The first stage of treat-ment is obtaining a full blood panel to ensure the dog is otherwise healthy. Then Immiticide, which kills the adult worms, is given in the deep muscles of the dog’s back.

The dog must be kept strictly con-

fined and quiet for at least six weeks after treatment is given. That’s be-cause when too many worms die or the blood pressure increases, arteries become fragile and can tear. This can cause air bubbles in the lungs, fever, coughing, spitting up blood and sudden death. About six months after treatment, dogs need another test to determine if the infection has cleared. If not, then additional treatment may be needed.

Dr. Browning is a veterinarian with Wil-liams Animal Hospital, Murfreesboro.

Welcome new houndsBetween Nov. 23 and Aug. 1, the following hounds

found homes through GPA/Nashville:

WANTED: Used printer cartridgesEmpty printer cartridges are a valuable commodity for GPA/Nashville. That’s

because they can be recycled. In return, we get $$$$ we use to cover expens-es such as foster food and foster vetting and gas used on home visits.

All kinds of cartridges can be recycled — from the smallest to the big ones you see at work. So collect a pile and contact Teri Hedges at [email protected]. She’ll take it from there.

Terri and Dave Hedges (Boston, Bay and River) do a great job of helping us raise money while also managing this recycling effort that also supports grey-hound adoption. Oh, and they print and mail this newsletter, too!

We need photos of your houndsGreyhounds are so photogenic and we have an opportunity to take advan-

tage of that while also promoting greyhound adoption.

Say “Cheese”The folks at Chuy’s, a Tex-Mex restaurant chain, are opening a new eatery in

September near Vanderbilt on 21st Avenue. They’ve invited us to help decorate the bar with framed greyhound photos (8 1/2 X 11 or smaller). They may even give us our own corner!

So print your hound’s most flattering photo, frame it and get it to Mardy Fones [email protected] by Sept. 10. We’ll get them to Chuy’s management.

Oh, BTW, they’re also giving us gift cards for the picnic/auction on Sept. 18.
