Bendigo Adoption Day postponed due to
kennel cough at GAP Seymour GAP Seymour will remain closed until further notice as
a precautionary measure after a number of dogs were
discovered with kennel cough.
The decision to temporarily close Seymour GAP,
following veterinary advice, will also impact the
Bendigo Adoption Day which was scheduled for August
13.
The Bendigo Adoption Day has now been
rescheduled to Sunday, August 27, pending no further
cases of kennel cough at Seymour.
Kennel cough is similar to the common cold in
humans and most dogs recover within a few weeks.
No new dogs will be accepted into GAP Seymour
during this period but intakes will continue at GAP Mt
Mercer.
No dogs can leave GAP Seymour until completion of
quarantine.
However, a restricted number of greyhounds will be
available at Baxter during the temporary closure.
GAP pre-entry assessments August 14 and August
15 will be rescheduled and no GAP adoption dogs will
be made available for RSPCA.
No collar assessments will be accepted at GAP Seymour
but the Pilot Green Greys assessment at Baxter on
Thursday, August 10 will proceed.
Volunteers and the public will not have access to
GAP Seymour during the closure.
The temporary GAP Seymour closure follows a
recent spike in kennel cough across the Victorian
greyhound racing industry.

AGRA GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH
JULY 2017
“FAST TIMES”
AGRA’s Greyhound of the Month for July is
brilliant New South Wales owned and Queensland
trained sprinter Fast Times following his outstanding
win in the Group 1 Ubet Winter Cup at Albion Park
on 6 July.
A son of Barcia Bale and Group 3 winner Clockwise,
Fast Times has long been held in high regard by his
trainer and had built a stellar resume which included
victory in the Lismore Maiden series last December to
go with a Queensland Derby final berth and a runner-up
effort in the Richmond Riches series in May.
Brett was full of praise for his chaser in what was
a performance that belied a dog which had started only
16 times prior to Thursday night.
“True grit from a good chasing young dog to do
that at his 17th start. I couldn’t be happier with him.”
Brett said.
“The first thing I saw was that Ando’s Mac also
jumped ok from out wide but we had the pace to beat
him to the first turn.”
Brett admits Bubble Guppy surging through in the back
straight caused a heart-in-mouth moment,
“He gave (Bubble Guppy) every chance because
he sat off the track. If Bubble Guppy had have gotten
through and held him off a bit he may not have come
back.”
“It was two good dogs and it was the longest 29.77 I’ve
watched in a race.”
A trip to Ipswich a few weeks ago appears to have
worked the oracle with Fast Times’ box manners
according to his trainer.
“That’s when he was last beginning, in those early
runs (at Ipswich).”
“You just go back to what was working and where
it was and you hope the change works and it did.”
Following the Group 1 victory Fast Times went to the
Meadows to contest another Group 1 the Maturity
Classic. Without having seen the track he won his heat
brilliantly first up on July 15 in a fast 29.92.
A week later in the semi-final he won again in
30.15. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury in the lead up
to Saturday night’s final and had to be scratched on
Friday.
The injury shouldn’t keep him sidelined for two
long and let’s hope he can take his place the Queensland
heats of the National Sprint Championship on August
10.
Fast Times is raced by Terry Hill and trained by
Tony Brett of Grandchester in Queensland. Fast Times
is a Black dog whelped April 2015 by Barcia Bale from
Clockwise (Magic Sprite x Elizabeth Royal). He has
won 13 of his 19 starts and has been placed on three
occasions his current stake earnings stand at $152,360.
AGRA congratulates owner Terry Hill, trainer Tony
Brett and Fast Times on being awarded the AGRA
Greyhound of the Month for July 2017.
He joins last month’s winner Mister Twister, Fanta
Bale (2), Falcon’s Fury and Lightning Frank as the
AGRA Greyhound of the Month winners for 2017.

WHISKY ROSE
Black bitch, November 2015 Hostile x St Trinians Gal.
Raced by Ben Pryse and trained for him by Barry Mills
as Badaginnie.
Having first race start when fourth from box one
over 525 metres at The Meadows (MEP) on Wednesday
9 August, beaten 7.9 lengths in the race won by the
more experienced Lektra Stroll (30.88).
Led early and unable to hold off the challenge
from the more experienced campaigners, but that was a
good effort and a sign of better things to come.
SCRAPPY DOO
Fawn Dog, April 2015 Cosmic Rumble x Diamond
Cluster). Trained at Willow Grove by Trevor Whitford,
for Michael Chilcott.
Taking a while to mature, with 14 starts now for
four placings, but last start third, beaten 3.73 lengths
over 525 metres at The Meadows (MEP) on 9 August,
in the race won by Candy Rose (30.88), coming from
box six was a good effort.
Prior to that placed over 545 metres at Ballarat in
previous four starts and is worth following.
ME BROS BAD
Black bitch, May 2015 Barcia Bale x Creative Mojo).
Raced and trained by Max Zammit at Exford.
Raced eight times now for a win, over 400 metres
at Geelong (22.65) and two placings.
Caught the eye with her last start third over 525
metres at The Meadows (MEP) on 9 August, beaten
1.13 lengths in the race won by So Amazing (30.79).
Before that had no luck when fifth over 515
metres at Sandown (SAP) on 6 August, also brom box
eight.
She hasn’t been closer to the rails than box four in
her last five starts, so keep an eye out for her when she
does draw inside box which will probably suit her
better.

Prevention is better than cure, right?
With breeding numbers down by around 60%, and an estimated 30
-40% of pups not being named, I would like to start a new service
- early education.
I'd like to see this become my main, if not only service. I feel it's a
critical step our industry has neglected for too long, and with the
poor percentages above, its important we become more efficient
with what we breed.
I'll provide details in a day or so, but basically this program is for
3-9 month old pups, with a minimum of 12 weeks to gain real
benefit from the intense one-on-one education. But longer the
better!
There will be 6 stages of which your pup will go through, all
designed to ensure your greyhound is a well-rounded, forward,
confident and keen chaser, with his/her prey-drive fully unlocked!
They'll still get all the standard rearing, but will also get exposed
to the kennel life as well as lots of bullring, box and drag lure
work.
For older pups, at stages 4, 5, and 6, your hound will be a junior
race dog, they'll even compete against another pup behind the drag
and on the clock, so that'll be great for syndications to keep clients
excited!
With early and consistent positive reinforcement, I can safely and
confidently offer a full refund on the extra service if (IF) your pup
doesn't break-in. That's $15 per week refund, even if you use the
full 40 weeks, or minimum 12 weeks. (*conditions apply).

Kennel Cough - Special Report
From page 1
Prevention is largely reliant on regular annual
vaccination and good kennel management.
Participants who suspect a greyhound of having
kennel cough should immediately isolate the
greyhound, disinfect their kennels, and contact their
veterinarian for advice on treatment and
vaccination.Individual immunity to the disease can be
maximised by maintaining a regular program of
vaccinations in all dogs, from puppy through to
adulthood.
Kennel cough is a complex disease caused by
various combinations of viruses and bacteria, so
vaccination may not always prevent the disease.
However, vaccination will minimise the severity of
symptoms in most cases.
GRV recommends that all participants speak to
their veterinarian as soon as possible about preventative
measures, including vaccination, to decrease the spread
of the current outbreak of this disease.
Kennel Cough – reducing spread in the greyhound
racing industry
This is a short brochure to explain the importance of
appropriate management of Kennel Cough in
greyhound racing kennels.
What is Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough is a highly contagious disease in dogs,
and is caused by a number of upper respiratory viruses
(including canine parainfluenza) and bacteria (usually
Bordetella bronchiseptica).
How do dogs get Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough is spread as droplets in the air from one
coughing dog to a healthy dog.
When an infected dog coughs, the bacteria and viruses
will usually die quickly in the air unless those droplets
are inhaled by another dog in close proximity. Once a
greyhound has inhaled the infection, it usually takes
between five and seven days for symptoms to begin.
It is important to note that even after the coughing has
stopped and your greyhound appears well, they can
remain infectious for up to three months.
What are the symptoms of Kennel Cough?
The symptoms of Kennel Cough include:
• runny nose
• sneezing
• dry, hacking cough
How long does Kennel Cough last?
Depending on the general health of your greyhound, the
exact infectious agent(s) associated with the disease,
and your greyhound’s vaccination status, Kennel Cough
can last from a few days to several weeks.
Can Kennel Cough be prevented?
Annual vaccination against the Bordetella
bronchiseptica bacteria and canine parainfluenza virus
(part of the C5 vaccination) can prevent Kennel Cough
outbreaks or at least help to reduce the incidence and/or
severity of the disease in racing kennels. As described
earlier, Kennel Cough is often caused by a combination
of viruses and bacteria, although it is often the
Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria that causes the
severe cough; and it is the coughing that spreads the
disease.
Vaccination is especially important because dogs with
Kennel Cough can continue to spread the disease for up
to three months after their symptoms have disappeared.
Kennel Cough vaccinations can be obtained through
your veterinarian in injectable, intranasal (nose) or oral
forms. The intra-nasal and oral vaccinations can be very
effective in preventing the spread of Kennel Cough, as
they usually act more rapidly than the injection. This is
because the intra-nasal and oral vaccines act on the
mucus membrane lining of the nasal and oral passages,
preventing the viruses and bacteria from gaining entry
into the animal.
My greyhound has Kennel Cough, what do I do?
At the first sign of Kennel Cough, the sick greyhound
should be immediately isolated from all other dogs on
your property and your veterinarian contacted.
Your veterinarian will provide you with information
about treatment options, quarantine and vaccination
options for that greyhound and any other dogs on your
property.
The kennel area where your sick greyhound was being
kept should be completely disinfected with hospital
grade disinfectant. Remember, the disease travels from
dog to dog through droplets in the air, so the whole
kennel facility should be disinfected and all bedding,
drinking and feeding utensils, and lures washed in hot,
soapy water.
Scrubbing is important to breakdown the surface of the
infection droplets and prevent spread. Any outdoor
housing (eg undercover kennel areas in day yards etc.)
should also be disinfected.
In addition, ventilating your kennel building
(opening doors at either end to allow fresh air in)
will also help reduce disease spread.
