    To The Reader

This book outlines the genealogy of my four grandparents, the Grzingers/Gretzingers and theHubers on my fathers side, and the Bayers/Boyers and the Drumbores/Trumbores on my mothersside.

My aim was to identify and trace each family line to the ancestor who immigrated to the UnitedStates. I achieved this objective for the Grzinger/Gretzinger and the Bayer/Boyer family lines. With the help of my cousin, Ray A. Huber, I successfully traced the Huber family line to theemigrant from Switzerland. However, further study is necessary in order to confirm the identityof the original emigrant from the Drumbore/Trumbore family.

In presenting my research, I employ a common format throughout the volume. First, a separatechapter is devoted to each family line. It begins with an overview of my research techniquefollowed by a narrative on each generation in the family line. The narrative reveals the sourcesthat I consulted and describes the personal background of family members, i.e. occupations, residences, recollections and experiences. Where possible, I illustrate these pages with scannedphotographs.

After the narrative is a genealogy report listing all ancestors that can be traced from the emigrantancestor to the present. Each family member who appears in the report is assigned a number, and this number is often cited in the narrative. For example, Richard C. Gretzinger, appears inthe Grzinger/Gretzinger genealogy report as entry number 35 as discussed in Chapter 2, An-cestors of Lewis (Grzinger) Gretzinger genealogy report, page 78. Also note that directlybehind this entrys middle name, Charles, is the number 5. This number indicates that Rich-ard is a 5th generation descendant of Lewis Gretzinger. Richards father, Wilmer H. Gretzinger,is therefore, a 4th generation descendant.

The next section is an alphabetical index listing all the names in the report. It also includes thereports page number reference for each descendant.

My research over the years uncovered many interesting facts. A few of the highlights are pre-sented below.

With the help of the National Church Archives in Stuttgart, Germany, I identified four gen-erations of Grzinger (spelled Groezinger without the umlaut) ancestors in Wuerttemberg,Germany. The genealogy of these ancestors, the Grzingers, has been included as separatechapter in this book.

The Stiefel family, also discussed as a separate chapter, emigrated from Germany in 1854.One of the Stiefel daughters, Johanna (aka Hannah), married my 2nd great-grandfather, LewisGretzinger.

The marriage of my Protestant great-grandfather, Henry S. Gretzinger, resulted in a connec-tion to the Levi/Levy family, whose ancestors were Jewish Germans. With information fromPaul E. Levy, my third cousin, once removed, I traced the Levi/Levy family to the emigrantfrom Germany (see separate chapter on the Levis/Levys).

  • vii

I discovered a relationship to the Weidner family-the result of the marriage between mygreat-grandaunt, Caroline S. Gretzinger, to Charles H. Weidner, Sr. (see separate chapter onthe Weidner family line). The Weidner ancestors played a part in the Fries Rebellion of1799. Many of the events leading to the rebellion occurred in my hometown. Rev. WilfredMaloney, Pastor Emeritus of my church, St. Alphonsus in Maple Glen, Pa., piqued my inter-est in the history of this event. At one of our Wednesday morning Bible Study classes, hementioned that many of the activities leading to the rebellion occurred in my hometown ofTrumbauersville, PA. As I was not familiar with the rebellion, I did some research at theBucks County Historical Library. I presented the results of my research at one of our Biblestudy sessions, and since the story is so compelling, I decided to include a summary as an-other chapter in this volume.

My direct ancestor, Lewis Grzinger (surname was later spelled Gretzinger), is fromWrttemberg, Germany, and consequently, I devote the final chapter to a brief history ofWrttemberg. I focus on the historical backdrop and the political/economic environment inGermany in the mid 1800s in an attempt to understand the reasons why many Germansemigrated during this period.

It is my hope that the reader will enjoy tracing the various branches of my tree and discover howthey might interconnect to our family with roots in Europe and the U.S.

Following are some notations and assumptions I used in the narratives and reports.

The notation nee in the narratives identifies the maiden name of a married woman. Forexample, in the picture on page 27, the name of Henry Gretzingers wife is listed as Ellamanda(nee Hoff) Gretzinger to indicate that Ellamandas maiden name was Hoff. When I was notable to identify the maiden name of a married woman, I used the notation nee? to signifymaiden name unknown. For example, on page 107 entry number 1, the wife of AndrewBoyer is recorded as Elizabeth (nee?) Boyer. The listed surname in the genealogy reports inthese cases is that of her husband.

For those instances where I found an ancestors salary, estate or pension, I valued the amountin todays dollars to put the amount in perspective. To calculate todays value, I used theaverage annual percent increase of the Consumer Price Index for the period from 1912 to2000, which was 3.5%.

For dates between 1800 and the present, particularly birthdays, I included the day of theweek, which reminded me of the following poem by Mother Goose.

Mondays child is fair of face, Fridays child is loving and giving,Tuesdays child is full of grace; Saturdays child works hard for its living;Wednesdays child is full of woe, But the child that is born on the SabbathThursdays child has far to go; day, Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

I was born on a Monday, so I must be a fair of face. What day of the week were you born?

    FOREWORD

I always had a keen interest in my family history. In the 1960s, with the help of my grand-mother, Emma (nee Huber) Gretzinger, I put together a basic family tree.

Since retiring in 1994, I have undertaken extensive study to expand my knowledge of the familyand its origins. My first effort was to compile my research on the Grzinger/Gretzinger ances-tors into a booklet that included Xerox copies of relatives photographs as attachments. In 1995,I distributed the booklet to family members, who expressed the desire to learn more about ourheritage.

In 1996, my son and daughter surprised me with a special Christmas gift. They had enhancedmy original booklet by reformatting the text on my sons computer, adding scanned photographsand taking the document to a professional printer for reproduction and binding.

The next step was to investigate the genealogy of the Bayer/Boyer and Levi/Levy families. Thefindings filled three separate booklets covering three different family genealogies.

By 1999, it had become apparent that I needed to assemble all my research into one overall book. The result is this present volume.

Besides a listing of family members, I have also added narratives and photographs to make theGretzinger story more compelling and relevant. I have attempted to be as accurate as possible bypresenting the facts as I uncovered them during the course of my research. If I have made errorsin the genealogy or misstatements in the narratives, I apologize and welcome your correctionsand additions.

I am deeply grateful to many people, who took the time to answer my questions, either in personor by letter and e-mail. I am also indebted to several family researchers who provided importantinformation that helped me to establish a linkage to my family lines. (See Acknowledgments).

Researching family history is like piecing together a giant picture puzzle. Many nights, I layawake in bed pondering the puzzle and its missing pieces. While I had connected most of thepieces at the puzzles center, I still had to fill in many of the surrounding areas.

I found the process of investigation and discovery interesting and exiting. One especially thrill-ing moment occurred when I found Lewis Groezingers naturalization papers. I also enjoyedlearning about those ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War and those who served inthe Union army during the Civil War.

Most particularly, it was rewarding to identify my rootsto understand who had gone beforeand to ponder what sacrifices they had made. Many left their homes, often at great personalrisk, to travel thousands of miles across an ocean to begin a new life in a distant country. I oftenwonder if I would have had the courage to make such a trip. In honor and remembrance of theirfortitude and faith, I dedicate this volume.

Websters Dictionary defines genealogy as, the science or study of family descent. Typically, thestudy of ones family involves tracing the family name, or surname, over time from one genera-tion to another.

The inherited family surname is a relatively recent development. According to the book, TheOrigin and Development of Jewish Family Names, the use of inherited family names began aboutthree thousand years ago. The Romans were the first Europeans to make use of family names. The custom, however, died out with the collapse of the Roman Empire and the spread of Chris-tianity, which recognized only baptismal names.

In most early cultures, one name was usually sufficient. If one name was not enough, then a by-name (or nickname) was used. By-names were similar to family names but were not perma-nent. For example, someone with a given name of John who was a tailor would have beenreferred to as John the Tailor.

Spanish Jews were the first to make widespread use of inherited family names. Yiddish speakingJews of Central and Eastern Europe were using hereditary surnames during the Middle Ages. Some surnames were derived from house signs, which were used instead of house numbers inmany German cities in the 16th and 17th centuries. For example, the Rothschild family lived at theRed Shield. Other shield names were: Alder (eagle), Taub (dove) and Schiff (ship).

Many European Jews adopted a fixed surname from various other sources, such as localities, occupations or characteristics. The surname Frank meant of France, the surname Schneidermeant tailor and the name Schwartz meant black.

At the end of the 18th century, government edicts required Jews to adopt permanent familynames. In the Austrian provinces and Hungary, including a large part of Poland and the Ukraine, all Jews were required to take German surnames. If they did not, a government commissioncould impose a surname. Government officials often took bribes in return for granting pleasantsounding names. Blumenthal was flower valley, Weintraub was winegrape and Steinbergwas stone mountain.

Those who could not or would not pay the officials might receive ridiculous names, i.e. Fresserfor glutton, Langnass for long nose and Schmalz for grease.

Although I studied a few surnames of German Jews, I focused the majority of my research onancestors who were Protestant Germans. My main objective was to research my four grandpar-ents with surnames GrGrGrGrGretzinetzinetzinetzinetzingggggererererer,,,,, Huber Huber Huber Huber Huber,,,,, Bo Bo Bo Bo Boyyyyyererererer and TrTrTrTrTrumborumborumborumborumboreeeee.

As is the case with all families, the number of succeeding ancestors is double the precedinggeneration. Each person has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, sixteen2nd great-grandparents, thirty-two 3rd great-grandparents, sixty-four 4th great-grandparents,etc. Thus, an individuals family tree starts with that individual and expands outward by a factorof two for each succeeding generation.

This expansion, however, does not continue indefinitely because of the intermarriages of cous-ins. This intermarriage, intentional and random, is Surname (or Pedigree) Collapse. A Britishsocial theorist, Robin Fox, has written that eighty percent of the worlds marriages have beenwith at least second cousins. In addition, blood relation marriages were common in royal housesin an effort to keep and expand power and wealth.

The further back that one proceeds in his/her family history, the more duplication in the pedi-gree occurs as more and more cousins marry. The shape of the family tree begins to collapseand takes the shape of a diamond. One of the most studied examples of intermarriage is thePennsylvania Amish. Studies have shown that 80% of the Lancaster Amish have only eieieieieightghtghtghtght sur-sur-sur-sur-sur-names names names names names because of their intermarriages.

Geneticist Guy Murchie has stated that no human can be less closely related to any other humanthan about the 50th cousin, and most are a lot closer. For example, President Jimmy Carter andPresident Richard Nixon were 6th cousins. They were descendants of Richard Morris, a NewJersey Quaker who lived before 1776.

Another factor that contributed to intermarriages was the pool of potential spouses. In manyrural areas in the early 1800s, this pool was limited to the distance one could comfortably walktwice a day when courting. This distance was about five miles. However, when the bicycle wasinvented, this distance extended to 25 miles.

During the course of my research, I did find the intermarriages of a few cousins. The largerimpact, however, was that of the distance limitation relating to the pool of potential spouses. Iwould estimate that at least 80% of my ancestors living in the 1800s in Bucks and MontgomeryCounties in Pennsylvania lived within 15 miles of each other when they were courting.

Many emigrant families recorded their history in the family Bible, which identified the inheritedfamily surname and recorded ancestors and descendants vital statistics. I was not aware that aGrzinger family Bible existed until my cousin, Jane Hartwich, informed me it was in thepossession of Glenn Franklin George, a great-grandson of Lewis Grzinger/Gretzinger. TheBible originally belonged to Johann Michael Christoph Grzinger and was dated 1825. He wasthe brother of Johann Ludwig Grzinger. Johann Ludwig was the father of Ludwig (Lewis)Grzinger, my 2nd great grandfather who emigrated from Germany to the United States.

  • 3When Lewis Grzinger immigrated to the United States, his uncle ( Johann Michael Christoph)undoubtedly gave the Bible to him. There are some entries in the rear of the Bible that wereprobably made by Lewis. These entries list the birth and marriage dates of all of Lewis childrenand the death of one.

It appears that Lewis passed the Bible to his daughter, Caroline, who married Charles Weidner.Caroline passed the Bible to her daughter, Emma, who married Franklin K. George. The Biblewas next passed down to the son of Franklin K., Glenn Franklin George. The Bible is currently inGlenns possession. Glenn and his wife Margaret (Peggy) reside in Doylestown, Pa.

In the summer of 1998, my cousin, Jane Hartwich, and I visited Glenn and Peggy George and sawthe Bible. In July of 2002, my son took digital photographs of the Bible which are reproduced onpages 3, 5 and 6. The frontispiece of the Bible has an inscription written by Johann Michael inold German script.

  • 4Inside the Bible, there is a handwritten document in old German script. Glenns wife, Peggy, hadthe document translated. It appears that Michael Christoph wrote it to the children of hisbrother, Johann Ludwig. One of those children was Ludwig, my 2nd great-grandfather. Thedocument appears to be a eulogy to the parents of Michael Christoph and it reads (another ofMichaels given names was Johann):

TTTTThe Parhe Parhe Parhe Parhe Parents and Childrents and Childrents and Childrents and Childrents and Childrenenenenen

Only once more in my whole life I would like to see my parents again. What would I not givefor this chance! Oh, would this only happen once more. I would press them against mycheek, burning with love, look at them with loving eyes, and look at their faces with the trustof a child.

Oh, fate! You have torn them from me. Adieu, my joy, my happiness, my everything. Mytears will still flow for them in years to come. Oh, Mother, you have born me in pain. I knowhow much you loved me. I have lost you forever. And also my father has been gone for years.

Oh, when I think back on the joyous hours when I was with my parents. Oh, what delight didI feel when I ate my piece of bread with them. I knew little about grief and sorrow. My heartwas always filled with joy. I was as happy in the evening as I was in the morning. At that time,I always felt well.

They always provided for me and my brother. They made us become good human beings. Idont see you any more, dear parents. God took you up to him forever, where you can livewith Him, see His countenance forever. He will reward you for everything you have done foryour children.

Only now do I recognize the great gift given to us when parents live longer. Every childshould call himself lucky when it still has parents around him. The love of parents is as greatand mighty as any love in this world. Many a mother would gladly bear all the pain if onlyher sick child would recover.

You children enjoy the happiness because your parents are still alive! Do not neglect to beobedient like a good child! Pray to God to give your parents a long life! Be righteous andaffectionate, and always lend a helping hand! Then you will live well on this earth.

I believe that Johann Michael wrote this eulogy after the death of his mother, Anna Barbara(Wernang). From the Family Register I obtained from the National Church Archives in Stuttgart,Germany, I was able to determine that she died at the age of 67, on February 5, 1835. JohannMichaels father, Johann Karl, died at the age of 55, on March 15, 1817, eighteen yearsbefore his wife passed away.

The Family Register recorded that Johann Karl and Anna Barbara had nine children. Fourhad died by 1823. Four daughters and two sons survived. The two sons were Johann MichaelChristoph and Johann Ludwig. (See page 288 for a listing of this family).

  • 5In the rear of the Bible there were a number of entries listing the births and marriages ofLewis Grzingers children. It is believed that Lewis made these entries after he immigrated tothe United States in 1848. The earliest of these entries was the birth of his first child, KarlChristian Grzinger, on May 16, 1855, and his death on August 3, 1857. These dates wereconfirmed by the dates on Karls tombstone in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church cem-etery, Zion Hill, Pa. The other birth dates recorded by Lewis in the Bible were confirmed bythe parish records of Christ Lutheran Church, Trumbauersville, Pa. A photo of the birthrecordings in the Bible is shown below.

My grandmother once told me that the first Gretzinger in our family came to this country fromsouthern Germany and his name was Lewis. From that bit of information, and a lot of searchingthrough census records, birth notices, marriage announcements, death records, tomb stones andchurch records, I have pieced together the genealogy of the Gretzingers that settled in and aroundthe town of Trumbauersville, Milford Township, Bucks County in the State of Pennsylvania.

The most significant sources of research information I used were obtained from the UnitedStates Federal Census and church records. A federal census is conducted every ten years begin-ning in 1790. The information in these records is currently available to the public for the years1790 through 1930. Under federal law, census records after 1930 are not yet available to thegeneral public.

The census records contain a wealth of information. The type of information recorded in eachcensus, however, is not consistent for each survey. Beginning with the seventh census in 1850,the head of the household is listed along with all those living in that household and their rela-tionship to the head of that household. Census records of 1870 added the sex, age and place ofbirth for each family member. For each wife listed in the 1900 census, the number of childrenborn to that mother and the number living at the time of that particular census were recorded.

The 1900 census also recorded the place of birth of each person listed on the census as wellas the place of birth for the head of the households mother and father. It also recordswhether or not the individuals can read, write and speak English and each persons occupa-tion. The 1900 census also provided information on home ownership- whether owned orrented and if the home is owned free or has a mortgage-and property use, i.e. if it is afarm or a home. If an emigrant, the 1900 census recorded the year the person entered theUnited States.

The census information was handwritten on large paper forms. For example, the formsused in the 1900 census were about two feet long and 18 inches high. Microfilm copies ofthe original census forms are available for research; however, complete census informationis beginning to be recorded on Compact Disks (CDs) that can be accessed by a PersonalComputer. Many entries on the handwritten census forms are difficult to read because ofthe penmanship and corrections made by the Enumerator, or census taker. In addition, many of the persons being interviewed by the Enumerator could not understand English, which led to many interpretations, particularly of surname spellings.

My research of the Gretzinger lineage was made somewhat easier because the family alllived in or near Milford Township, Trumbauersville. Many were members of the same

church, the Christ Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Church on North Main Street,Trumbauersville. Many are also all buried in the Union Church Cemetery, Trumbauersville. The church records provided valuable information concerning births, deaths and marriages.

This genealogy begins with my great-great grandfather, Lewis. A listing of his descendantsbegins at the end of this chapter on page 76. Lewis is listed as entry number 1 in the report. Inthe following narrative, the entry numbers precede each name.

Lewis was born on Thursday, January 14, 1819, in Reutlingen, in the state of Wrttemberg, located in southwestern Germany. He was baptized into the Lutheran church in Germany in1819 and confirmed in 1833. Lewis fathers given names, according to a family register ob-tained from the National Church Archives in Stuttgart, were Johann Ludwig, and his mothersname was Margaret Bhl. Lewis appears as entry number 1 on the report Descendants ofLewis Grzinger/Gretzinger, page 76.

The birthplace of my ancestor as noted above was Wrttemberg. Wrttemberg was successivelya countship, a duchy, a kingdom and a republic before partition after World War II. For the lastperiod of its separate existence, it was bounded northeast and east by Bavaria, southeast byBavaria and Lake Constance, and southwest, west and northwest by Baden. The capital wasStuttgart. Except for the Rhine plain, Wrttemberg is a mountainous and hilly region that in-cludes the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest and is drained by the Neckar River.

By the mid-1800s, a liberal nationalist movement was underway to unify Germany and to estab-lish a federal constitution. The liberals were demanding more individual freedom and liberty, trial by jury and the rights of free press and assembly.

These liberal reform efforts, however, met opposition from the more conservative peasantry,Lutheran clergy, civil servants and large landowners. The opposition became so great that inNovember of 1848, King Frederick William IV stopped these reform efforts and retained allexecutive authority in his (the Kings) hands.

The stern reactionary measures taken by the king to suppress the liberal movement forced manyof the inhabitants of Germany, particularly Wrttemberg, to emigrate. Many came to the UnitedStates where they found fertile and free soil. The US inherited a fortunate legacy because of thedefeat of the liberal movement in Germany.

A brief history of Wrttemberg is included in Chapter 12.
