HistoryTigers In Professional Baseball

Although there are currently no former Tigersplaying major league baseball, Towson Uni-versity had extensive ties with the big leagues.

From 1979 to 1987, the Tiger baseballprogram was coached by Bill Hunter, a formermajor league manager and player. Hunter, whocompiled a 144-166-3 record in his nine seasonsas the Tiger baseball coach, had a seven-yearcareer as an infielder with the St. Louis Browns,the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Yankees,the Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Ath-letics. The Orioles’ starting shortstop in 1954,he was a member of the 1953 American Leagueall-star team. He also played for the Yankees’World Championship team in 1956.

After his retirement as a player, he joinedthe Orioles’ organization in 1962 andmanaged Bluefield in the Appalchian Leaguefor two years, leading the team to a pair ofleague championships. In 1964, he joined theOrioles as Hank Bauer’s third base coach, aposition he held for more than 13 seasons.During those years, they won two world titlesand four American League pennants. In mid-1977, he left the Orioles and managed theTexas Rangers for two years, leading theRangers to a pair of second place finishes inthe A.L. West. After his retirement in 1978,he became Towson’s baseball coach. He wasthe Towson University athletic director from1984 to 1995. Inducted into the Orioles’ Hallof Fame in 1997, he became a member of theTowson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

One of the finest pitchers in Towson history,Chris Nabholz pitched in the major leaguesfrom 1990 to 1995. A second round draft pick

by the Montreal Expos in 1988, he pitchedfor the Expos from 1990 to 1993. In fourseasons as an Expo, Nabholz had a 34-29record. In 1992, he was 11-12 with a 3.32earned run average. The lefthander made hisdebut in 1990, posting a 6-2 record and a 2.83E.R.A. He also pitched for the Chicago Cubsfor one year and split the 1994 season betweenBoston and Cleveland. He retired with a 37-35 career record and a 3.94 E.R.A.

Since 1995, Towson has had 11 playersdrafted by the major leagues.

Last year, outfielder Casper Wells andinfielder Shane Justis were drafted. TheColonial Athletic Association Player of theYear, Wells was a 14th round pick by Detroitwhile Justis was chosen in the 21st round bythe Los Angeles Dodgers.

Wells had a solid season for the Gulf CoastLeague Tigers as he hit nine doubles, fivetriples and five home runs with a team-leading20 runs batted in. Justis batted .273 for theOgden Raptors with seven doubles, two homeruns and 15 RBI’s.

In addition, first baseman Jason Maxeywas signed as a free agent by the BaltimoreOrioles and played for the Aberdeen Iron-birds. He batted .256 at Aberdeen with eightdoubles and 16 runs batted in.

Pitcher Derek Hasselhoff, ’95 came veryclose to reaching the major leagues. Hassel-hoff, a member of the Chicago White Soxorganization for five and a half years, pitchedfor the Class AAA Pawtucket Red Sox in2002. In 1999, he helped the CharlotteKnights win the International League title,

posting a 6-0 record with four saves and a4.82 E.R.A. In 2001, he pitched to a 6-1record at Charlotte with a 2.03 E.R.A. andsix saves. In three years at Charlotte, he hada 19-5 record with 16 saves.

A third round draft pick by the TexasRangers in 2000, Chris Russ had an impres-sive start to his career before injuries tooktheir toll. In 2000, he pitched at Pulaski in theAppalchian League and had a 2-0 record witha 0.83 E.R.A. After being promoted to Savan-nah in the South Atlantic League, he had a 3-1 record and a 2.43 E.R.A.

In 2001, he had a 5-2 record with a 3.47E.R.A. at Charlotte and was named to theFlorida State League’s All-Star team. However,a back injury sidelined him for the rest of theseason. Former Tiger pitchers Chris Fiora andDenny Chapman also pitched in the minorleagues six years ago. Jason Rummel, ’99was a 29th round draft pick by the White Soxin 1999. He hit .267 with eight home runs and36 runs batted in during one season at Bristol.

In 2001, Bryan Simmering was drafted byOakland in the 27th round. He had an impres-sive season for Phoenix in the Arizona League.He had a 2-2 record with a 2.40 E.R.A.

In 2002, Gregg Davies was drafted by theBaltimore Orioles in the 21st round. He playedfor the Aberdeen Ironbirds in their innauguralseason and hit .224 with 13 doubles. In 2003,he split the year between Delmarva and Fred-erick and hit .270 for Frederick.

In 2003, Mike Costello was signed as anundrafted free agent by the Orioles and spenttwo years in their minor league system.

East Coast Conference champions - The Tigers celebrate the final out of the 1988 East Coast Conference Tournament after their 21-9 win overDelaware. With the victory, the Tigers earned a bid to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time.
