Greetings from the President Claudio Riedi Greetings from the President Claudio Riedi At the end of June 2019, our Consul General, Ms. Annette Klein left her post in Miami and returned to Germany for a new position in the Auswärtige Amt in Berlin. Consul General Siegel will take over the position in July, and work his way into the posting. We are looking forward to meeting him and introducing him to our members in the coming months. I have now experienced this ritual of changing the Consuls General in Miami about ten times, and it still strikes me as remarkable. I imagine Consul General Klein, building relationships, and taking on tasks in Miami, seeking to effect long-term change in many ways. I see her representing Germany ably in so many events, I cannot count them, and I see her build friendships and lasting relationships. And then, just as she gets her groove, she is ordered to return to Germany for an entirely different posting. This cannot be easy. My children went to school with the children of former Deputy Consul General of Germany here in Miami, and I heard of the trials of families of diplomats. How do you grow roots in a community, if they are cut every three years? And yet, Consuls General such as Annette Klein build these relationships – grow these roots -- over and over again, and become the links of official Germany to groups such as the GABC. We rely on the Consulate for help in so many ways, and a representative of the consulate – often Annette Klein herself -- sits in on many of our meetings with comments and suggestions. I dare to say that without this close cooperation between the Consulate and the GABC, there would be no GABC. So, we bid farewell to Consul General Klein with a laughing and a crying eye: We laugh because we know that we have gained another friend in high places, together with Consul General Klein’s many predecessor, whom I remember most fondly. And we cry because just as we were getting to know Consul General Klein, we lose her. But because I am a “glass-half-full” person, I raise that half-full glass to thank Consul General Klein for her support, and wish her well on her future endeavors. Auf wiedersehen, Frau Klein, either here or in Berlin.
