Transcript of GREETINGS FROM THE MCSPCA - Monmouth County SPCA€¦ · Pasadena Humane Society, ED of Humane...
The real test of how effective an organization is comes
when it is confronted with a significant challenge.
Hurricane Sandy presented the Monmouth County
SPCA with such a challenge and we rose to meet it.
Starting the day after the storm, the organization began
to mobilize by coordinating animal rescue efforts,
preparing our facility to take in additional animals and
by providing pet food and supplies to impacted
families so that their pets could remain with them as they rebuilt their
homes. During the last months of 2012 we took in 150 animals related to
Sandy and distributed over 300,000 pounds of food. In the process we
established an official Pet Food Pantry program to continue our
outreach efforts to community shelters, food banks and at risk members
of our community.
At the same time we were able to increase the number of adoptions
and the number of lives saved by 3% over the prior year. As most of you know we opened an offsite adoption
center at the Freehold Raceway Mall mid year and adopted out over 700 animals from there. As well, we
continued to expand our humane education outreach
both in the local schools and in onsite seminars for the
public. Our low cost spay/neuter surgery clinic, weekly
community vaccination outreach and TNR initiatives
continued on track in 2012.
Our ability to provide the breadth of programs and level
of service we do was a direct result of the generous
support from over 7,000 donors in 2012. I am gratified by
your confidence in our ability to fulfill our mission to
protect and advocate for all animals and look forward in
2013 in continuing to expand our outreach and to saving
even more lives.
Jerry Rosenthal, President and CEO

The Pet Pantry helps keep beloved pets in their homes by providing food, spay/neuter and
pet supplies. We believe that if people feel a strong sense of support it will eliminate the
choice between paying a household bill and buying pet food, and they are less inclined to
surrender their pet.
We are in the community giving out food and raising funds to purchase food and for spay and
neuter of pets. In November we converted the Maureen O’Brien Thrift Store into a Pet Pantry
Distribution Center to help families impacted by Sandy. We are feeding 500 pet families in
need. More than 300,000 pounds of food and supplies have been received from generous
donors in our community and across the country. Thank you!
We need wet dog and cat food, dry cat food, litter, supplies and funding.
Contact [email protected] or 732.440.1524. Thank you again!
Bissell’s Partners for Pets
When you purchase pet products on bissell.com and enter the code ADOPT at checkout, a portion of your purchase is donated to our shelter. Plus, every purchase goes towards an entry for us to win a $5,000 quarterly giveaway!
We are proud to announce that we have partnered
with Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and Pets for
Patriots to offer reduced fee adoptions and veterinary
care to veterans. This program offers opportunities for members of the military community
to save a life by honorably adopting homeless adult dogs and cats.
Dr. Anthony DeCarlo, of Red Bank Veterinary Hospital said, “As soon as we found out about
the program, we were very touched by the program’s mission. We are happy to help and are
thrilled to be the first veterinary hospital to participate in New Jersey.”
We’re thrilled to be partnering with these two great organizations!
Welcome Karen Terpstra, our new Chief Operating Officer at the Monmouth
County SPCA! Karen has a wealth of experience having been the Assistant ED at
Pasadena Humane Society, ED of Humane Society of Kent County (now West
Michigan) , VP/COO of Cincinnati SPCA and VP of Operations at Charlotte
Humane. She has a degree in English from Michigan State University, is a
Certified Animal Welfare Administrator and has served on the Society for Animal
Welfare Board and Committees since 1998 and the HSUS Animal Welfare Council
from 2006—2011. She loves German Shepherds and Tuxedo Cats and has four
failed fosters—including Harry from the MCSPCA.
Nobody was more excited when longtime resident Tyrus went home than Tyrus’s best buddy, volunteer, Ken McKeel. Ken took this photo of Tyrus’ new family to celebrate.
Finding homes is what we do, so what makes Tyrus so special? He was at the shelter for almost a year before he found that perfect match. Our Behavior team, along with volunteers like Ken, worked with Tyrus during his stay to make sure that his long stay in the shelter didn’t negatively impact him. On the day he went home, his champions gave him a going away party – complete with a personalized cake for all of Tyrus’s shelter friends and new family. Please join us celebrating this wonderful moment for all of the other bully-type breeds in shelters, fosters and rescues across the country still waiting for their perfect family!
Don’t let cold weather lull you into a false sense of security and
forget to give your dog a preventatives for heartworm disease
every month. Heartworm preventatives should be
administered all year long, even in the winter months.
The disease occurs when a mosquito bites, and the larvae enter
into the dogs’ blood from the mosquitos’ saliva. While in the
dogs’ blood, the heartworm larvae grow and develop into adult
worms over a 6-9 month period. The preventative’s active
ingredient is designed to destroy any larvae present. The
disease can cause fatal heart disease if we allow larvae the time
to develop into adults that will eventually migrate through the
blood into the pulmonary arteries.
In summary, remember to give heartworm preventatives 12
months of the year to make sure that your animals are
protected from developing heartworm disease. Yearly testing
for heartworm antigen is
required prior to heartworm
preventative administration so
please visit our Friday
vaccination clinic for a
heartworm test if necessary.
