Pastor’s Message May 2017

John 21:9-14

“9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.”

The Gospel of John takes the time to tell us several stories of Jesus’ appearances to his Disciples after his resurrection. They are fascinating stories, as Jesus comes among the 11,

shows himself, interacts with them, gives the gift of the Spirit, and reassures them that he has, in fact, been raised as he had told them he would. This will help to guide his chosen ones to the day of Pentecost and the birth of the true church, but these appearances have other, deeper meanings as well.

Notice in this story just how physical Jesus is in his interactions – this following directly after his conversation with Thomas, the “unbeliever.” They have touched his hands and his side. They have embraced him, and now they share food with him, and he eats like any other man. All of these steps are taken to show us that Jesus was not just spiritually raised from the dead, but physically raised, and that he was found in his body in his new life after death. This is because John, and the other Gospels slightly less so, is attempting to do something theological in its recalling of the stories of Jesus.

An important part of the theology of all the Gospels is incarnation. Jesus is God in flesh and blood, in material, bodily form – in physical, tangible “stuff” just like you and me. It is the way that we can connect with God through Christ – as the church father Athanasias said “He became what we are that we might become what he is.”

Seeing Jesus eating bread and fish after his Resurrection tells us that even after his dying and

rising, we can still find God through Christ in flesh and blood in our midst. Christ said “I will be with you always, till the end of the age” (Matthew 28) and our tradition tells us that we are to see the face of Christ in those around us.

Every Sunday that we speak together the Apostle’s Creed, you will see me + myself when we say the words “The Resurrection of the body…” This is because I believe that my closest connection to the risen Jesus Christ is found in my connection with God’s children – in flesh and blood, tangible presence just as Jesus shared with his Disciples after His resurrection. We live in the Easter promise of Christ raised from the dead, and the way that we see Him in our midst is in each other, in the faces – and hands – and bellies – and feet of those who are near to us, those who are far away from us, and maybe especially those who need our help.

This month, find the physical presence of God with you in the body of Christ that surrounds you as we live in the joy of the Easter promise.

Special Announcements!

Max Lucado’s Fearless - Sunday School Topic May 7 through May 28

A study of Max Lucado’s book, Fearless, will be the Sunday School topic in May. This

series will be facilitated by various Church members. Lucado is a well known Christian

author who has written almost 100 books with 80 million copies in print and has also

appeared regularly on several bestseller lists including the New York Times Best

Seller List. His book Fearless asks you to imagine your life, wholly untouched by

angst. What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction to threats? If you could hover a

fear magnet over your heart and extract every last shaving of dread, insecurity, or

doubt, what would remain? Envision a day, just one day, where you could trust more

and fear less. Can you imagine your life without fear? Please consider making Sunday

School a part of your Church activities in May.

The Laughing Lutheran!

The rabbi and the priest met at the

town’s annual picnic. Old friends, they

began their usual banter.

“This ham is really delicious,” the

priest teased the rabbi, “You really

ought to try it. I know it’s against your

religion, but you just haven’t lived until

you’ve tried Mrs. Hall’s prized Virginia

Baked Ham. Tell me, when are you

going to break down and have some?”

The rabbi looked at his friend with a

big grin, and said, “At your wedding.”

Two boys were walking home from Sunday school

after hearing a strong preaching on the devil.

One said to the other, "What do you think about all

this Satan stuff?"

The other boy replied, "Well, you know how Santa

from 9:00 am until noon. See more

pictures on page 15!

would like for our congregation to do for

‘God’s Work Our Hands’ Sunday in

September, please let Jean Richardson

know and she will be happy to help plan

and organize the activity. Also if anyone

has a special outreach project they would

like for our congregation to undertake,

please contact Jean.

A message from Jean Richardson…

As always, we are thankful for all who

continue to contribute to our outreach

ministry.

Please consider assisting with our

monthly meal preparation for Zion

Shelter and the Blind Center. Our next

date to prepare lunch for Zion and Blind

Center clients will be May 17. If you

can’t cook, feel free to donate food!

Thanks to all who have brought items to

fill the box for the Coastal Pregnancy

Center. Grace really rallied to support

this CPC during the season of Lent!

And, don’t forget the boxes in the

Fellowship Hall for our ongoing

outreach for Ruth’s House, Zion Shelter,

and Eagles Wings.

The Needlers have started meeting

again and are making prayer shawls,

hats, scarves, etc. They are meeting

every second and fourth Thursday of

the month at 1 pm in the Fellowship

Hall. The prayer shawls are made for

anyone in need. The hats and scarves

go to Zion shelter. Small pillows,

referred to as ‘bosom buddies’ (8-12

inches, any shape) are made for cancer

patients. Anyone who likes to knit,

crochet, quilt, etc., are welcome to

share in this fellowship.

If you have any questions about any of

these projects, please let Jean know.

God’s work. Our hands.

Treasurer’s Report as of March 31, 2017

Submitted by Bonnie Smith, Treasurer

GENERAL FUND BUDGET STATUS:

YTD Income less Expenses is $ 4,801.00

Actual income YTD is 29% of annual

budget.

Actual expenses YTD are 25% of annual

budget.

The reporting year is 25% complete.

Red Cross trainer, Michael Francis

(pictured right), provided AED

training at Grace on Saturday, April

numerous church memebers who

attended the training. From left to

Last month, Grace purchased and installed an

AED (automated external defibrillator). It is

now mounted in the narthex beside the men’s

restroom door.

An AED is a portable electronic device that

automatically diagnoses the life-threatening

cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation

and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is

able to treat them through defibrillation, the

application of electrical therapy which stops

the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to

reestablish an effective rhythm. With simple

audio and visual commands, AEDs are

designed to be simple to use for the layperson.

Thanks to all who went to the training!

GLC now has an

AED and people

trained to use it!
