Greetings From Fr. Dave ~ [email protected] We conclude our four-part series on Holiness this week, talking about Service. If we are praying well, making good use of the sacraments, and taking serious ongoing learning (study), the result will be lives of ser- vice. St. Paul describes this as the “Fruit of the Holy Spirit”. The ultimate proof that we are on the right track as far as spirituality goes is judged by the pres- ence, (or absence) of these fruits: love, joy, peace, pa- tience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, self control. (Galatians 5:22) Christianity fully lived is im- mensely attractive! People who exhibit these qualities stand out in our world. Didn’t we see them clearly in Pope Francis when he made his visit to our country? I suggest each of us review the booklet we printed to accompany this series, and mark the areas that stand out as most enticing or most in need of further effort. All of this is about KNOWING Jesus personally, GROWING in that relationship, and GOING forth and making a difference in our world. I am eager for more of you to be able to tap into the energy of our Refugee Welcoming Ministry at our Ministry House. My own life has been deeply moved by the interaction I have had with the families that we have had the privilege of welcoming so far. Their per- severance thru horrendous hardship, their profound gratitude for this opportunity to make America their country, the clear sense of hope and expectation they radiate—all of this is just heart-warming and inspir- ing. Current opportunities for involvement include child care (currently we have 6 children under the age of 6 in the house!), transportation, friendship, and on- going need for furnishings for their apartments as soon as they move on from our house (usually about a three week period). Contact Al Schmitt our Commu- nity Outreach staff person at [email protected] , or 503-641- 1842. Next weekend you get a TWO FOR ONE special! The Holy Day in honor of All Saints falls on Sunday! And, as is our tradition we honor All Souls day on this same weekend. Our banners will be displaying the names of those whose funerals we held at Holy Trinity in the past year. May they and all our de- ceased enjoy the fullness of LIFE for all eternity. This week we had funeral services for Lionel Fisher. Blessings to him and to his family. We celebrated the wedding of Rowena Rivera and Rven Garcia this weekend. Blessings on their mar- riage. Josephine Bradetich and Sawyer Phillips were bap- tized this week. Congratulations to them and their families. Brett's two-Cents ~ [email protected] Hello everyone. Have you ever found yourself in a conversation, reading an editorial, or listening to an interview in which someone makes reference to the awful role the Catholic Church played in the ____________ (Crusades, Inquisition, Galileo affair, etc.)? Me too! Sometimes in those situations, I’ve even wanted to offer a counterpoint, but haven’t felt like I’ve had the facts to back up my opinion. Well, do I have something for you! Stephen Gabriel has put together a book titled Catho- lic Controversies – Understanding Church Teachings and Events in History . What Gabriel has done is re- searched so many of the controversies (historical, moral, theological, etc.) involving the Church and brought together some of the best writing on each of these topics. When I first opened the book, I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of the articles and authors that over time I’ve found to be most help- ful on these questions have been included here under one cover. Thus, you have Mark Shea writing on the Catholic doctrines of Purgatory and Mary; Stephen Barr on cosmology and the Church’s relationship with science; Thomas Madden on the Crusades and the In- quisition; Rodney Stark (an agnostic!) on the huge contributions the Church has made to Western Civili- zation; and many others! Gabriel divides his collec- tion into four major sections: 1.) the Credibility of God, the Church, and Scripture; 2.) the Church in His- tory; 3.) Misunderstood Doctrines of the Church; 4.) Moral Teachings of the Church. When we don’t know our own history, we risk buy- ing into a narrative about the Church as told by per- sons who would just as soon see the Church close its doors and disappear. Gabriel’s inspiration for putting together this book arose out of the experience of his children, who were constantly coming home from col- lege feeling like they had no way of answering the charges being leveled against their faith by professors and classmates. If you’ve ever felt likewise, this book is for you. Check it out!

GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE

Food availability is something that many of us take for granted. The refrigerator or cupboard always has something in it, right? And if not, a quick trip to the grocery store soon solves that problem. For those who come to the Food Closet, the situation is usually very different from that. That mes-sage was really driven home last week when a woman came in, checked with the front desk to let them know she was here, and then quickly excused herself to go back to her car for a few minutes. When asked if everything was OK, she responded that it was but that she had begun contractions. She knew the situation at home and knew that she needed to get food in the refrigerator and cupboards before she went to the hospital to have the baby. We offered a variety of help and assistance, which she declined, but she did accept our offer to bump her to the head of the line to get served. So, the next time you need to run to the grocery store because you are out of something, count your blessings. I will! Speaking of blessings, are you blessed with an open bed pick up truck or trailer? Do you have two hours each Thursday morning to put that truck or trailer to good use? If so, please contact me as our Thursday crew could use your help get-ting food from the Oregon Food Bank to Holy Trinity.

Refugee Welcoming: Please check the website for the latest updates as changes happen quickly and frequently. If you know anyone who needs food, please have them con-tact Care To Share at 503-591-9025. You can also reference our web site for additional information. Parishioners need-ing help are encouraged to contact Al directly, at the num-ber above, and can be assured that their request for help will be totally confidential and private.

FAMILY FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 10:46-52

Jesus was traveling with his disciples and many people. A blind man named Bartimaeus was sitting and begging on the side of the road and when he heard that Jesus was in the crowd he began to call to him, saying, “Have pity on me.” Although some people told him to be quiet, Bartimaeus kept crying out, and so Jesus stopped and called for him. When Jesus asked what he wanted, Bartimaeus simply said, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” And Bartimaeus could see immediately. Have you ever thought about how many blind or sick or injured peo-ple were around in Jesus’ day? And that he didn’t run around trying to heal them all. Instead, he healed those who called out to him for help. What does this mean for us today? What do you think Bartimaeus already knew about Jesus before he talked to him? What does Jesus mean when he says ‘your faith has saved you’?

ADULT FAITH FORMATION Director of Faith Formation - Erin Nieves ~ [email protected]

In light of Fr. Dave’s suggestion to consider doing some spiritual reading, I want to point out two books on the Kiosk in the back of church that are both easy to read and give a great overview for Catholics on how to read the Bible. Both give a great overview for what Catholics mean by “Salvation History”. Read either of these to get the bird’s eye view of God’s plan and plot in the Bible:

Written by Dr. Scott Hahn, it provides a narrative used to accompany the “Genesis to Jesus” Journey through Scripture study we are using. It is a stand alone resource that will give an understandable overview of how the Bible works by a very readable Catholic Bible Scholar.

Written by Dr. John Bergsma, another Steubenville au-thor/teacher, we have another walk through Salvation History, providing another way to assist us in reading the Bible. A succinct and understandable approach to under-standing the Word of God from a Catholic point of view. “Genesis to Jesus”, the 7-Week study continues. Here is what is left of our study topics:

Week Three – 10/27: Noah and a Renewed Creation Week Four – 11/3: Abraham: Our Father in Faith Week Five – 11/10: Moses and the Israelites Week Six – 11/17: The Covenant with David Week Seven – 11/24: Jesus: Fulfillment of the Promises

EVENING SESSIONS: Tuesdays at 6:30PM- 8:00PM in the Chapel. MORNING SESSIONS: Tuesdays at 9:00AM -10:30AM in the Fireside Room. Questions? Email [email protected]
