CENTRE for SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE
Why are we here?
• We are worried (very worried) about what’s happening to the climate and its effects on human health
• Healthcare professionals are key to change but often left out of sustainability
• There are many co-benefits to health and the environment to transforming healthcare for a sustainable future
CENTRE for SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE
What does CSH do?
• Inspire NHS staff, patients and community with positive co-benefits to health and the environment
• Empower healthcare professionals with the tools to make changes
• Transform healthcare for a sustainable future

The Carbon Footprint of healthcare in England
• The NHS is huge
• Carbon reduction target of 90% by 2050, but carbon emissions are still increasing
• so we work mostly with people in clinical specialities to transform healthcare
CENTRE forSUSTAINABLEHEALTHCARE
Sustainable HealthcareWhy less of the same is not enough• 90% reduction is a LOT!• Only 22% of the carbon footprint is from direct
energy use so we need to transform care itself not just improve buildings and recycling
• We need to look at pathways of care, to cut out waste and to improve patient experience• Prevention• Patient centred care• Lean pathways• Lower carbon choices

“There’s certain significance in the planting of trees thatleaves a lasting legacy. Here at RDaSH, particularly in thegrounds of our Trust Headquarters, we are lucky to have had so many beautiful trees planted by our predecessors,so when the opportunity came along to take part inplanting an NHS Forest it only seemed right to be a partof that. The therapeutic benefits of trees and the grounds, especially in mental health, are of great significance forour service users. For these reasons we fully intendfurther elements of the NHS Forest to be incorporated into Trust strategies for the foreseeable future.”
CEO Chris Boswell, Rotherham, Doncaster and SouthHumber Mental Health Trust.
