    believepredatestheexistenceofhumans.TheirexpediXonsoonturnsbad,whenascoutteamarefoundcompletely

    decimatedandseveralofthelifeformsthattheyhadrecovered

    forresearchhaveseeminglyvanished.OnfurtherexploraXonof

    theruinedcity,theselifeformsappeartohavebeenan

    advancedrace.Beforelong,theremainingexplorersrealizethis

    cityisn'tasdeadastheyhadfirstthought.

    TheAuthorHowardPhillipsLovecraDwasbornin1890,inProvidence,RhodeIsland.Hisfatherdiedwhenhewaseightyearsoldaersufferinganervousbreakdownandfallingill.Hisupbringingwasletohismother,twoauntsandhisgrandfather.Lovecrawasaveryintelligentyouth.

    Hebegantorecitepoetryattwoyearsold,wasreadingatagethreeandbegantowritewhenhewassixyearsold.AstorytheyoungLovecrawasmostinspiredbywasArabianNightsandhisobsessionwithhistoricalcivilizaXonsandworldswasonly

    furtheredbyGreekMythologicalworkssuchasIliadandOdyssey.

    InhischildhoodyearsLovecrawasoenentertainedbyhisGrandfathertellingstories;mostofwhichwereimprovisedweirdtales.

    ItwasthisthatinspiredLovecraintocreaXngworksofWeirdFicXon.By1896Lovecrahadwri_enhisfirststorynamedTheNobleEavesdropper.AgedeightLovecrafoundaninterestinastronomyandchemistry,takingituponhimselftocreatejournalstohandoutamongsthisschoolfriend.FollowingencouragementtopushhiswriXngfromhispeersandteachers,Lovecraeventuallyfoundhimselfpublishedin1906starXngacareerasacolumnistwithvariouspaperssuchasThePawtuxetValleyGleaner,TheProvidenceTribuneandThe

    ProvidenceEveningNews(Joshi,2006)

    AttheMountainsofMadnesswaspublishedinaXmewhenAmericawasinadepressionfollowingtheWall

    StreetCrashof1929.ButyetitwasaXmewhenmysteryficXonswerebecomingpopular(suchastheworksof

    AgathaChrisXeandRaymondChandler.)DespitetheAmericanpublicnothavingmuchinthewayofmoney,

    theyconXnuedtogotothecinemainordertoforgetthehardshipsofeverydaylife.Thissawanabsoluteboom

    inmovieproducXon.ThethirXeshavebeenreferredtoasHollywoodsGoldenage.Manyblockbusterreleases

    andHollywoodcelebriXesofthedayaresXllfamiliartothisday.

    ThethirXessawtheexplorerandadventurerRichard.E.ByrdtakeatwoyearexpediXon(193335)to

    AntarcXca,toconductresearchinthefrozenwastelands.Anotherpioneer,AmeliaEarhartwasmakingher

    nameinflight,becomingthefirstwomanandthesecondpersontoflyacrosstheAtlanXcsolo.Italmostseems

    theperfectXmetoreleaseabooklikeAttheMountainsofMadness,whentheAmericanpubliccanonly

    speculateoftheadventuresoftheseexplorers.

    Radioentertainmentbecamepopularbecauseitwasfreetolistento.Millionsofpeoplewouldtuneinfor

    variousshows;comedy,sport,soapoperasandmusic.Oneofthemostrenownedstoriesof30sradiowould

    bewhenayoungOrsonWellesbroadcastaplaybythenameofWaroftheworldsbyH.G.Wells;thestoryof

    anAlieninvasion,panickedamillionpeople,whobelievedtheplaytoinfactbeanemergencyNewsbroadcast,

    despitetherebeingadisclaimerreadouttotheaudiences.ThethirXeswasaXmeofgreatentertainment,inspiteofthehardshipofthepeople.
