Creating Social ValueA Guide for Leaders and Change Makers

Cheryl Kiser and Deborah Leipziger with J. Janelle Schubert

l The first textbook to focus on social value creationl Includes case studies on new types of leaders who can drive both social value creation and

financial profits simultaneouslyl Introduces a new lexicon for creating social value in organizationsl A distillation of key work from Babson College’s Social Innovation Lab

Social value creation is a journey and each company charts its own path through uncertain and complex terrain. The entrepreneurial lead-ers profiled in this book are trail-blazers in this new business landscape using both strategy and innovation to generate profits and social value simultaneously.

Creating Social Value focuses on the motiva-tions and preoccupations of entrepreneurial leaders as they look to activate change within their companies, in their sectors, value chains and even through co-creating partnerships with their competitors. Such change requires funda-mentally new styles of leadership and business

design where companies seek to be generative rather than extractive.

This book is also the story of the emergence of new language. Many of the leaders included in this book have driven change by harnessing the power of language to transform the direc-tion their company is taking.

This book sets out a manifesto for Social Value Creation defining it as a strategy that combines a unique set of corporate assets in collaboration with the assets of other sectors and firms to co-create breakthrough solutions to complex economic, social and environmen-tal issues that impact the sustainability of both business and society.

“This book provides much-needed insights on important global trends and how they affect the viability of private sector activities . . . Creating social value is no longer an externality; it is deeply connected to the long-term success of enterprises.”Georg Kell, Executive Director, UN Global Compact

“It is especially valuable to learn from a portfolio of firms that are in the midst of the early stage struggles to define a field of practice and embed it in both small and large busi-ness organizations. Creating Social Value is an outstanding compendium of those efforts…the book will undoubtedly shape a generation of managers trying to move organizations beyond purely economic outcomes . . . a rare treat indeed!” Leonard A. Schlesinger, Baker Foundation Professor, Harvard Business School, and President Emeritus, Babson College

As Chairman of the Royal Dutch Shell Group from 1991–2001 and of Anglo American plc from 2002–2009, Sir Mark Moody-Stuart is as qualified as anyone on the planet to discuss the realities, dilemmas and lessons to be learnt from the last 20 years of corporate engagement with sustainability, ethics and responsibility. In this unique book – part memoir, part confes-sional, part manifesto for leadership – we hear a unique voice from the front line of corporate responsibility. Moody-Stuart retraces the steps of a remarkable journey from being a post-graduate geologist to being at the helm of two of the largest corporations in the world.

We hear of dealings with dictators and prime ministers, colleagues and NGOs, rivals and friends. We travel from Syria to Nigeria; Iraq to Downing Street; and from the machinations of the United Nations to those inside the board-room of Shell. We see Shell’s annus horribilis in 1995 unfold through the eyes of an insider,

and how Brent Spar and the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa sent shockwaves through the com-pany, resulting in a complete reappraisal of its mission and principles. We hear about the oil and mining sectors and their complicated devel-opment role in areas of conflict and corruption; the way that markets have failed us on climate change and corruption; and how governments need to step up to the global challenges we face. We hear how Deep Water Horizon could have been avoided; what Shell were asked to do by Tony Blair during the UK fuel blockades of 2000 and why they declined; why China is too important to ignore; and why the Global Com-pact is too important to fail. We hear lessons from a life spent living in 10 different countries and we come to realize that, for corporations, trying to do the right thing can sometimes be almost impossible. We also come to know a deeply ethical and thoughtful leader who has always tried to do exactly that.

RESPONSIBILITY

The Corporate Responsibility Code Book has become the go-to guide for companies trying to understand the landscape of corporate respon-sibility and searching for their own, unique route towards satisfying diverse stakehold-ers. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. A company may face quite different challenges if it operates in more than one part of the world. And yet stakeholders, especially consumers and investors, are keen for some degree of compa-rability with which they can evaluate corporate performance. There are countervailing forces at work within corporate responsibility: on the one hand is the need for convergence in order to simplify the large numbers of codes and standards; and, on the other hand, the need to foster diversity and innovation.

Many of the best codes of conduct and standards are not well known, while some CR instruments that are well disseminated are not

terribly effective. Some comprehensive codes of conduct achieve nothing, while other quite vague codes of conduct become well embedded into the organization and foster innovation and change. This landmark book explains the best CR instruments available, and distils their most valuable elements.

In the fully revised third edition, Deborah Leipziger widens her lens to provide detailed analysis of the UN Guiding Principles on Busi-ness and Human Rights, the Gender Equality Principles and ISO 26000 while updating other key tools such as the Equator Principles, the OECD guidelines and GRI’s new G4 framework. The codes in this book cover a wide range of issues, including human rights, labour rights, environmental management, corruption and corporate governance. The book also includes how-to (or process) codes focusing on report-ing, stakeholder engagement and assurance.

If CSR is to be more than a PR programme, then it is necessary to examine how things have gone badly as well as how things have gone well . . . if the study of business is to work its way out of an often unproductively sycophantic attitude, this book will be a welcome resource.” Adrian Henriques

Drawing on Lifeworth’s annual Corporate Responsibility (CR) reviews, this book inves-tigates the key events, issues and trends in corporate responsibility from the onset of the financial crisis. It considers what the impact of the corporate responsibility movement has been and presents a vision and practice of a new form of capitalism.

The global response from business to social and environmental issues during the past decade has created a corporate responsibility movement. But what has been the impact of this movement? The financial crisis that began in 2007 has led more and more people to ques-tion the fundamentals of our economic system. Now, some within the corporate responsibility movement are developing a vision and practice of a new form of capitalism, one that will

require collective action to achieve. Bendell and Doyle draw on Lifeworth’s

annual reviews of corporate responsibility and propose a wellness framework whereby busi-ness is a conduit for enhancing life and the systems that support it. They explain how busi-ness leaders, stakeholders and related academe now need to experiment with new models that address the fundamental flaws of contemporary capitalism, including monetary systems, enter-prise ownership, and regulation.

This book will be a fantastic resource for business libraries, as it records and analyses key events, issues and trends in corporate responsibility during the first decade of the 21st century. It is a sequel and companion to Bendell’s previous work, The Corporate Respon-sibility Movement (Greenleaf Publishing, 2009).

Social Intrapreneurism and All That JazzHow business innovators are helping to build a more sustainable world

David Grayson, Melody McLaren and Heiko Spitzeck

l Identifies the mind-sets and skills that have helped social intrapreneurs to be successfull Reveals how creative social innovators are improvising alliancesl The first book to focus on how intrapreneurs are changing business for the good from the

inside of large organizationsl Based on years of research from the Cranfield School of Management

In response to the world’s rapidly-growing social, economic and environmental challenges, a growing wave of “social intrapreneurs” are harnessing the power of large companies to create new business solutions to address soci-etal problems.

Social Intrapreneurism and All That Jazz reveals how these highly creative social innovators are improvising alliances across, as well as beyond, their companies to cre-ate micro-insurance products for low-income people; offer delivery services to millions of small businesses in slums around the world; develop alternative-energy solutions inside a major gas and oil corporation; partner with a Brazilian community to produce new natural care products; establish a “green” advertising network within a major media company; apply engineering expertise to help alleviate poverty and much more – all while generating com-mercial value for their companies.

Distilling insights from interviews with social intrapreneurs, their colleagues and experts around the world, the authors bring to life how business can be about more than just maximiz-ing profit. They identify the mind-sets, behav-iours and skills that have helped successful social intrapreneurs journey from initial idea to roll-out by their company – and some of the pitfalls. They also tell the stories of the intra-

preneurs’ managers and other colleagues who helped them get there, by providing support to help bring projects to fruition.

Perhaps the most important lesson from this book is that, in contrast with the prevail-ing Western business archetype of the solitary entrepreneurial hero, successful social intra-preneurs do not act alone to achieve success. Although their journeys may be lonely at times and require considerable hard work while working “against the grain” of large conven-tional businesses, successful social intrapre-neurs are, above all, great communicators who inspire others to join them in achieving a higher purpose beyond the realms of conven-tional business.

Drawing on the metaphors of ensemble jazz music-making, the authors describe how “woodshedding”, “jamming”, “paying your dues”, being a “sideman”, joining and build-ing a “band” but, above all, “listening” to what is happening in business and the wider world – are all part of the life of a successful social intrapreneurism project.

Whether you’re an aspiring social intrapre-neur who wants to change the world while keeping your day job, or want to renew the entrepreneurial spirit of your own company, this book is for you.

The Institute for Social Innovation’s mission is to develop the skills of individuals and organizations in the business and non-profit sectors to strengthen, through their activities, their contribution to a more just and sustainable world. To this end, the Institute generates and disseminates knowledge and provides training in the areas of corporate social responsibility and the relationship with stakeholders, NGO leadership and management and social entrepreneurship. In 2011 the Institute launched the Antenna for Social Innovation with the publication of a report which set out to inspire and raise awareness about the potential for social innovation and to identify global trends and changes in this evolving sector. www.socialinnovation.esade.edu

can be most effective. These variables can be helpful for investors, governments, academic centres, foundations and individual entrepre-neurs interested in measuring the potential of any given social innovation to bring about the much-needed systemic change to solve today’s complex challenges.

This book builds on a track record of research and education in corporate social responsibility and social entrepreneurship at ESADE Business School’s Institute of Social Innovation.

Building on an understanding of the key characteristics and challenges faced by social entrepreneurs here authors undertake a deeper analysis of social innovation.

The world’s social, ecological and economic problems are so complex and diverse that there will never be a “one-size-fits-all” model for social innovation. The very nature of social innovation as a new, better way of solving social problems means that it is not even in the interest of social innovation advocates to cre-ate tidy definitions, but rather to create envi-ronments that allow for the process of creative destruction with a social purpose to prosper.

Inspired by a desire to deepen our under-standing of the role of social innovation in addressing today’s most pressing challenges, authors Heloise Buckland and David Murillo explore four inspiring cases and define a new set of variables to help better understand the conditions under which social innovation

The book addresses the Six Principles of PRME (Purpose, Values, Method, Research, Partnership, and Dialogue) as well as important related aspects, such as how to get started, how to suc-cessfully report on PRME adoption, and so on.

It’s not what we know, but how we learn. Learning to Read the Signs reclaims pragma-tism: an activity of thought involving four parts: Investigation, Hypothesis, Action and Testing. It is a method of interpretation or inquiry which offers a way to better under-stand the reality in which we operate, to think critically and creatively, to make the best use of all our talents. So what are the signs telling us? Where are we headed and why? Why are things going the way they are? What is our purpose? Examples abound of companies and organi-zations that have failed to “read the signs”: the automobile and the financial services industries are obvious examples. Doing busi-ness successfully in the 21st century means becoming aware of the filters that modify and limit business vision in our culture, leading to short-term reactive thinking. With today’s

unprecedented challenges, learning to read the signs is a business imperative. This book outlines a mode of inquiry that can be used to solve cognitive as well as ethi-cal questions. Nahser shows us that often we do not even know the right question to ask, that we must start by trusting our doubts and seeing where they lead, so that we can begin to ask the right questions. He shows that a practical philosophy can call into question our outworn assumptions, open up new lines in inquiry, and lead to conclusions we never imagined at the beginning of the process – conclusions not just about what to do next, but about our larger purposes, those frameworks that give us meaning and direction. In this long-overdue and radical update to his seminal book, Ron Nahser turns his atten-tion to how pragmatism can be applied by all organizations to create both success and a better world.

Corporate DiplomacyBuilding Reputations and Relationships with External Stakeholders

external-stakeholder-facing functions. These include government affairs, stakeholder rela-tions, sustainability, enterprise risk manage-ment, community relations and corporate communications. Through such integration, the place where business, politics and society inter-sect need not be a source of nasty surprises or unexpected expenses.

Most of the firms profiled in the book are now at the frontier of corporate diplomacy. But they didn’t start there. Many of them were motivated by past failings. They fell into conflicts with critical stakeholders – politicians, communities, NGO staffers, or activists – and they suffered. They experienced delays or dis-ruptions to their operations, higher costs, angry customers, or thwarted attempts at expansion. Eventually, the managers of these companies developed smarter strategies for stakeholder engagement. They became corporate diplo-mats. The book draws on their experiences to take the reader to the forefront of stakeholder engagement and to highlight the six elements of Corporate Diplomacy.

Managers of multinational organizations are struggling to win the strategic competition for the hearts and minds of external stakeholders. These stakeholders differ fundamentally in their worldview, their understanding of the market economy and their aspirations and fears for the future. Their collective opinions of managers and corporations will shape the competitive landscape of the global economy and have serious consequences for businesses that fail to meet their expectations.

This important new book argues that the strategic management of relationships with external stakeholders – what the author calls ‘Corporate Diplomacy’ – is not just canny PR, but creates real and lasting business value. Using a mix of colourful examples, practically relevant tools and considered perspectives, the book hones in on a fundamental challenge that managers of multinational corporations face as they strive to compete in the 21st century.

As falling communication costs shrink the distance between external stakeholders, shareholder value is increasingly created and protected through a strategic integration of the

In a world where the implications and conse-quences of corporate actions and decisions are potentially far-reaching and lasting, ethical standards − their observance and their breach − must be part of the language of business conduct, whether in the context of corporate transgressions, regulatory effectiveness, terms of engagement between business and their stakeholders, or the metrics used by investors in assessing performance and risk and under-standing long-term value. This critically important book proposes a new paradigm for understanding, develop-ing and maintaining standards of corporate governance. Its point of departure is not a position along the diverse paths of traditional corporate governance and regulatory theory, law and practice, nor specific questions of how to institute, implement and observe policies and practices that function as proxies for good governance. Instead, it starts with the idea of framing governance generally, and corporate governance specifically, as a matter of conduct that is guided by a set of fundamental ideals and principles.

Evolutions in Corporate Governance attempts to answer the wider question of how to re-imagine a framework within which “good” cor-porate governance − that takes account of and is responsible for the social, environmental, ethical as well as legal and economic dimen-sions of business conduct − is addressed along-side issues of profitability and competition, in the face of forces of globalization and business influence that are testing the limits of what can be accomplished by traditional law and regulation. Dempsey contends that meaning-ful change in behaviour will come only when there is a corporate governance framework that explicitly encompasses both law and ethics. This book is an outstanding work of subtle and sophisticated scholarship, one that ranges across diverse literatures, and makes a pro-found contribution to our knowledge of corpo-rate governance and ethics. It will be essential reading for both academics and practitioners researching and working towards better busi-ness ethics.

The Long HedgePreserving Organisational Value through Climate Change Adaptation

Jason West

l Outlines a climate change adaptation framework to help organizations respond appropriately to climate change and adequately inform their investors and stakeholders

l Gives a comprehensive assessment of climate change management in the corporate sector

Between climate change mitigation and adap-tation, adaptation is seen as the poor cousin of international climate change efforts. But in the absence of globally coherent mitigation activities, adaptation may one day become the main line of defence for many organizations. Organizations have a clear imperative to assess both costs and benefits of taking action to mitigate the impacts of climate change on their business. They must also adapt their behaviours where economically and practically feasible. Responding to change and managing risks are normal corporate activities, and adaptation to climate change is part of the risk management continuum. However, the main impediment to companies translating incentive into action is in knowing where to start. Mitigating and adapting to risks and chang-ing circumstances is a natural part of doing business. But methods of mitigating and adapt-ing can be quite different in terms of time, cost and observed impacts. The impacts of mitiga-tion activities are more immediate while the benefits of adaptation activities may take many years to take effect. Nowhere is this difference more apparent than in the case of the corporate response to climate change.

In the context of climate change, adapta-tion is the process of changing behaviour in response to actual or expected climate change impacts. Climate change adaptation is now

emerging as a critical partner to mitigation, and indeed may even become the primary pro-tection mechanism for future generations.

In this unique book, Jason West provides a comprehensive assessment of the management of climate change adaptation in the corporate sector. The book provides a formal overview of the range of approaches available along with a series of practical case studies and exam-ples that can be used by companies and other organizations to identify, assess and manage climate change adaptation.

A major focus is on the financial and invest-ment implications of climate change adapta-tion. West examines how firms can evaluate the investment decisions associated with long-term climate change adaptation meas-ures, including how such investments can be valued and funded, the appropriate accounting treatment of such measures and appropriate risk management and governance practices in relation to such measures. The Long Hedge will illuminate the path towards measuring vulnerability, managing climate risks, model-ling financial exposure and properly disclos-ing the costs and benefits of such actions to investors and stakeholders. The book also considers the needs and interests of investors and other stakeholders, and considers how they can assess the adequacy and appropriateness of corporate action on climate change.

Socially Responsible Organizations and the Challenge of PovertyEdited by Milenko Gudic, Al Rosenbloom and Carole Parkes

l Case studies and research on how organizations are working to alleviate local and global poverty

l Provides conceptual and research rationales for why management education must address the issue of poverty

l The first part of a book series by the PRME Working Group on Poverty

The vision of the PRME Working Group on Poverty as a Challenge to Management Educa-tion is to be advocates for the integration of poverty-related discussions into all levels of management education worldwide. Their vision is grounded in their beliefs that:

• Poverty is a legitimate topic for discussion and research in schools of business and management

• Business should be a catalyst for innovative, profitable and responsible approaches to poverty reduction

• Multiple stakeholder engagement is needed for innovative curriculum development

This book provides a combination of case studies and current action research describing how businesses and civil society organiza-tions are working to alleviate poverty in local and global communities. It intends to provide conceptual and research rationales for why management education and management institutions must address the issue of poverty. The book responds to one of the major find-ings from the research of the PRME Working Group on Poverty that the topic of poverty still lacks a strong business case for manage-ment educators and program/institutional administrators.

The distinctive features of this book are that it: (1) includes examples of small and medium-sized (SME) businesses; (2) deals with the

issue of poverty as a human rights violation; (3) explores the issue of absolute versus relative poverty; (4) deals with leadership challenges in organizations committed to poverty alleviation; and (5) discusses the issues in terms of man-agement education’s responsibility for setting new management, research, institutional and intellectual agendas.

The first of two books to be produced by the PRME Working Group on Poverty, Socially Responsible Organizations: The Challenge of Poverty aims to provide both researchers and practitioners with the most wide-ranging coverage yet published on how business can be a positive force in alleviating poverty and how management education needs to adapt to this increasingly crucial prerogative.

Managing Corporate LegitimacyA Toolkit

Dorothée Baumann-Pauly

l Develops an assessment tool that enables us to look behind the façade of corporate social responsibility

l Outlines which organizational elements need to be in place to realize the political role of corporations in global governance

“Managing Corporate Legitimacy is a landmark book for corporate social responsibility in the 21st century and will help define the field in the next decade and beyond. It is intensely practical and offers step-by-step real-world solutions to the everyday CSR issues facing managers. While Managing Corporate Legitimacy is a highly practical down-to-earth book written in accessible language, it is also solidly grounded in cutting-edge scholarship. I highly recommend it for practitioners and scholars who want to understand and be part of the next phase of the global CSR movement.”Michael Santoro, Rutgers Business School

Today, many large multinational corpora-tions claim to conduct business in a socially responsible manner, yet no tools exist to assess whether and to what degree they have systematically revised their business practices to take on these new responsibilities. Managing Corporate Legitimacy addresses these research gaps by clarifying the role of the corporation as a private actor in global governance at con-ceptual and empirical levels; by contributing to our theoretical understanding of CC as a new phenomenon in globalization; and by further-ing the development of appropriate approaches to CC in practice through its toolkit.

The book develops tools for assessing corpo-rate citizenship (CC), the concept that describes the political role of corporations in global

governance. Building on theories in political science, corporate citizenship establishes a new role for the corporation in the global economy. The failure of many governments to provide basic rights for their citizens has given rise to the expectation that globally operating corpo-rations should step in and fill governance gaps, for example in the area of human rights.

The tools developed in this book provide practical and detailed guidance for imple-menting and embedding CC and manag-ing corporate legitimacy. It will be essential reading for practitioners looking for ways to legitimize their engagement with societal issues and for academics considering how we can better measure the engagement of busi-ness with CC.

The Necessary TransitionThe Journey Towards the Sustainable Enterprise Economy

Malcolm McIntosh

l Asks whether a transition to a sustainable future is possible within the logic of conventional capitalism

Is a transition to a sustainable future possible within the logic of conventional capitalism and 20th-century models of development? This book provides radical perspectives from vary-ing entry points and will be essential reading for academics and practitioners interested in how we plan, speed and scale such necessary transitions.

Life on Earth for humanity and our ecosys-tems is at a point of great change. There is much to be learnt about previous great disrup-tions, and subsequently about adaptation and transformation. Most international companies operate across multiple social and environmen-tal geographies, so they are familiar with this intellectual and practical landscape. And for many governments the challenges of social and environmental justice are also paramount – not least because equitable societies are best for business, and best for human well-being.

The Necessary Transition addresses the many transitions taking place around the world right now: from high- to low-carbon economies, from gross inequality to egalitarianism, from massive human rights abuses to socially just societies, and from high corruption to societies with high social cohesion and integrity.

The book brings together leading interna-tional researchers and practitioners to share their knowledge and expertise, and offers answers to many of the pressing questions that must be addressed in the journey towards a sustainable enterprise economy – an absolutely necessary transition for humanity. Contribu-tors include: Sara Parkin, Founder-Director and Trustee of the UK’s Forum for the Future; Mark Swilling, co-author of Just Transitions and Academic Director of the Sustainability Institute, South Africa; and a Foreword by Sir Tim Smit, co-founder of The Eden Project.

“The many authors of this book have, over the years, met at various venues around the world and have one thing in common — the book’s co-ordinator and editor, Malcolm McIntosh, whose insight and dogged insistence on staying optimistic have long been an inspiration to me. They are each at the top of their professions and wouldn’t normally work with each other, but have chosen to do so because professionally, and personally, they think it is important.”Tim Smit, KBE, co-founder of The Eden Project

The textile industry – the production of cloth-ing, fabrics, thread, fibre and related products – plays a significant part in the global economy. It also frequently operates with disregard to its environmental and social impacts. The textile industry uses large quantities of water and outputs large quantities of waste. As for social aspects, many unskilled jobs have disappeared in regions that rely heavily on these industries. And textile industry companies, faced with fierce international competition, are increas-ingly failing to offer job security. This is with-out even considering the informal-sector work proliferating both in developing and developed countries. Child labour persists within this sec-tor despite growing pressure to halt it. Fashion demands continuous consumption. In seeking to own the latest trends consumers quickly come to regard their existing garments as inferior, if not useless. “Old” items become unwanted as quickly as new ones come into demand. This tendency towards disposability

results in the increased use of resources and thus the accelerated accumulation of waste. It is obvious to many that current fashion indus-try practices are in direct competition with sustainability objectives; yet this is frequently overlooked as a pressing concern. However, sustainability in the sector has been gaining attention in recent years from those who believe that it should be held accountable for the pressure it places on the individual, as well as its contribution to increases in consumption and waste disposal. This book takes a wide-screen approach to the topic, covering, among other issues: sus-tainability and business management in textile and fashion companies; value chain manage-ment; use of materials; sustainable production processes; fashion, needs and consumption; disposal; and innovation and design. The book will be essential reading for researchers and practitioners in the global fashion business.

such products come with a heavy social and environ-mental cost. Sustainable luxury is about rediscov-ering the old meaning of luxury - a considered purchase of a beautifully crafted object with built-in social and environmental value. The social entrepreneurs documented in this book highlight the relation-ship between personal values and sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation in developing and marketing luxury products. The pioneers outline how they have developed inclusive sup-ply chains with poor and vulnerable communi-ties. Their stories prove that luxury need not be a destructive force. In future, the highest-quality product or service will be the one that generates the most benefit to all involved in its production and trade. Topics covered include value chain management, production and design processes, entrepreneurship, cause-related mar-keting and innovation. This book explores a wide range of issues relevant to sustainability and business management in luxury goods compa-nies. Product-Service System Design for SustainabilityEdited by Carlo Vezzoli, Cindy Kohtala and Amrit Srinivasanwith Liu Xin, Moi Fusakul, Deepta Sateesh and J.C. Diehl

l State-of-the-art examination of the theory and practice of system innovationl Introduces the concept of PSS innovation and outlines the characteristicsl Examines a wide range of potential research directions on sustainable PSS designl Valuable resource for design students, teachers and practising designers

This book is supported by comprehensive and open-source learning resources and tools available for free for students and teachers at: www.lens.polimi.it.

This book is a state-of-the-art examination of the theory and practice of system innova-tion through Product-Service System (PSS) design for sustainability from a trans-cultural viewpoint. PSS design incorporates innova-tive strategies that shift businesses away from designing and selling physical products to developing integrated systems of products and services. The book provides background, advice and tools for designers and design students interested in sustainable PSSs and has a wealth of case studies for practitioners to digest.

The first part of the book introduces the concept of PSS innovation, outlining the characteristics and features of such innovation, how different types of PSS can be classified, and which are the related benefits, drivers and barriers. It argues that such innovation has the capability to potentially bring radical reduc-tions in the current levels of resource con-sumption, without minimizing consumer levels of satisfaction.

The second part of the book examines a wide range of potential research directions on sustainable PSS design including:

• Sustainable PSS in different socio-economic contexts (industrialized, emerging and low-income)

• Sustainable PSS in different organizational bodies (companies, public administrations, NGOs)

• Sustainable PSS and consumption patterns• Sustainable PSS and social innovations• Sustainable PSS and aesthetics• Sustainable PSS and distributed economies• Sustainable PSS and social enterprises• Sustainable PSS and socio-technical transi-

tions• Sustainable PSS and the sufficiency econ-

omy: combining efficiency with sufficiencyThis book is the outcome of the LeNS, the

Learning Network on Sustainability, a project funded by the Asia Link Programme, EuropAid, European Commission, for curricula develop-ment and teaching diffusion in worldwide design Higher Education Institutions. It is a hugely important teaching resource for under-graduate, graduate and PhD design students, design teachers and practising designers worldwide.

In this book we find how 16 business leaders brought together their compassion, their caring for others and the world, with their work.

Are you looking for sense and meaning in your work? Would you like to be successful but expect more in the way of reward and fulfilment than just a pay cheque? The Future Makers offers 23 encouraging responses to these ques-tions. It tells the diverse stories of people from around the world who have made a sustainable mark on the world through their careers: from an American financial market specialist to tree planters in Africa; from Japanese environmental experts to dancers in Argentina. The Future Makers are people who make the world a better, more beautiful and livable place for current and coming generations.

What is seen publicly is the initiative, the impact on the bottom line and the community, or sometimes on the environment. Yet it is their personal stories that can be most inspira-tional, since they draw our attention to the fact that amazing achievements start in simple ways, with just the thinking of one individual.

Busi-ness anthropologists, with their dual background in business and cultural diversity, are poised to excel in this capacity. As business anthropology comes of age, this timely study provides the perspectives needed for the growth and further development of the field and those who work within it.

This groundbreaking book by business scholar William C. Frederick presents an exciting – even revolutionary – view of corporate management and the challenges it confronts in today’s world of corporate management. It is essential reading for managers and researchers who wish to engage with long-term sustainability.

“the most important business book of the new millennium . . . He is our economic Coper-nicus, introducing a model of business that is radical yet instantly definitive. Students, professors, and, above all, business leaders must learn and apply the principles of Natural Corporate Management, lest they continue to limit their success in the face of the most fundamental forces bearing on the corporation.”Thomas Petzinger Jr, Wall Street Journal; serial biotechnology entrepreneur

“This book should be on the bookshelf of any management practitioner or management researcher with a genuine interest in sustainability. And if I were to pick a textbook for a course on sustainability or corporate social responsibility The Three Levels of Sustainability would definitely be my first choice.”Prof. Dr Aimé Heene, Ghent University, Antwerp University, College of Europe Bruges

“The book combines realism and intellectual precision with hope and a fundamental faith in the possibilities of humanity. It significantly enlarges our vision of sustainability and it is a required read for any thinking person who wants to understand the roots of today’s difficult relationship between the economy and the other spheres of our life.”Nicola Misani, Assistant Professor of Management, Università Bocconi, Italy

“A must-read for leaders and policy advisers of all disciplines.”Paul Comenencia, Diplomat and former Chamber of Commerce Executive

“This book tells us not only where to go but also gives us the roadmap of how to get there. The latter is particularly valuable as the road will be rough and difficult.”Frans N. Stokman, Professor of Social Science Methodology, University of Groningen

“To me, the major achievement of the book is its presentation of complicated and some-times controversial topics . . . analyzed from a variety of different perspectives and disci-plines, and yet producing an engaging, readable, and practical text.”Alex Mollen MBA, Management Consultant, Curaçao

The authors frame their ideas around the three levels of sustainability (TLS) framework, which is placed firmly in its historical context, via informed discussions on the history of econom-ics, business-and-environment, social develop-ment, the corporation and the profit principle, CSR, and measurement and reporting. The approach encompasses societal, organizational, and individual levels; and, by looking through

the lens of how sustainability has evolved, provides a roadmap for producing the kind of leaders necessary for sustainable development. This book has been designed as both a text for students as well as those already in manage-ment and leadership positions in the private, public, or non-profit sectors; and will also prove invaluable to those wishing to familiar-ize themselves with sustainability.

Cranfield on Corporate SustainabilityEdited by David Grayson and Nadine Exter

l Stimulates the debate about what business schools across the globe should be teaching

l Contributions from more than 30 Cranfield faculty and associates across multiple management disciplines

Business schools have a special contribution to make in developing globally responsible, critical and independent-thinking future lead-ers and managers. Cranfield School of Man-agement’s core ideology is to transform the practice of learning and create leaders who action their knowledge and become stewards of

the common good. Such thinking forms the basis of this book and its theme of developing responsible and ethical leaders for next-generation enter-prises. This book aims to provide a roadmap both for business students – the leaders of tomorrow – and for existing and engaged leaders to address the challenges of the sustainability agenda. Today, the challenge for business schools is to establish a new maxim: “the business of business is sustainable business”. This unique book is a manifesto for a new holistic, embedded approach to corporate sus-tainability management education.

This book examines the applicability of different elements in the bottom-up development literature to the innovation process of BoP ventures. It unveils connections between the two concepts and builds a theoretical base for the case study research. This is a key book for BoP researchers and practitioners on the ground.

“In this important new book, Piera Waibel has zeroed in on the key challenge when it comes to generating successful BoP businesses – how to effectively embed value proposi-tions and business models. The first ten years of BoP business was all about cost reduc-tion and business model innovation; the next ten years will be all about co-creation and bottom-up innovation”Stuart L. wind energy? Do we scrap all our gasoline-driven autos? How do we move forward?

Greenergized! puts the issues of climate change and renewable energy in front of the general reader in an engaging and digestible way. It is a much-needed route into the issues surrounding the most serious debate our generation faces. And it pulls off the bril-liant trick of being highly readable at the same time.

Entrepreneurship, Innovation and SustainabilityEdited by Marcus Wagner

l High-quality research illuminating the rela-tionship between the three fields of entre-preneurship, innovation and sustainability

Addresses the intersection of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability (EIS). The EIS nexus is particularly relevant from an EU point of view; and the rapid economic growth wit-nessed especially in the BRIC countries in recent years requires that firms reconcile sustainability aspects with profitability and innovation, and entrepreneurs are seen as key diffusers of these

aims. Innovations required for sustainability often come from SMEs and so the role of the entrepreneur is key to their success. Section I examines the nexus in detail focus-ing on system-oriented connectivity between sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship. Section II looks at how to nurture corporate entrepreneurship for sustainability. Section III considers “mature” industries such as auto-motives, chemicals and electronics. Section IV examines the nexus through the lens of developing countries in Africa. Section V con-centrates on SMEs. In section VI the EIS nexus is approached from a network perspective and focuses on inter-organizational partnerships, which are often an important facilitator or spark for EIS initiatives.

MicrofranchisingHow Social Entrepreneurs are Building a New Road to Development

Edited by Nicolas Sireau

l The franchise model as a response to Africa’s endemic economic stagnation

l A ground-breaking set of case studies and analysis of microfranchising for development

There is a new movement surging ahead in its attempt to reduce poverty and generate wealth in Africa: microfranchising. Set up by pioneering organizations such as VisionSpring and Health-Store, it is based on one of the most successful market-based models in Western economies. And results have been inspiring: instead of depend-ency generated by traditional charity develop-ment projects, these new social capitalists have generated enterprise and self-sustainability in the most challenging environments of rural Africa.

This long-needed book provides practical steps from the world’s leading experts on how to set up a microfranchise, from recruiting franchisees, to building a brand and a supply chain. It gives case studies of successful microfranchises, told by the enterprises themselves. It continues with a theoretical analysis of the place of microfranchising within global social entrepreneurship. It ends with a look at the future for microfranchising, with recommenda-tions for development. Edited by the former CEO of SolarAid, which created the Sunny Money microfranchise, the book brings together academics and practition-ers to provide context, analysis and practical advice to guide any entrepreneur, NGO, business or government interested in setting up their own microfranchise scheme.

Edited by Karel Mulder, Didac Ferrer and Harro van Lente

l The sustainability impact of a technology is often much more complicated and ambivalent than you might expect

l Case studies of different technologies in contrasting contexts

l Essential for product designers, engineers and material scientists

How do we allocate resources and attention when there are myriad issues under the umbrella of “sustainable development” currently in com-petition with one another? How do we arrive at precise specifications for the sustainable technol-ogies that are to be developed and, furthermore, reach consensus on these specifications? What

if our sustainable techno-logical solutions aggravate other problems or create new ones? And, because sustainable development is all about the long-term consequences of our actions, how do we assess the effects of modifying existing landscapes, infra-structures and patterns of life? How could we be sure in advance that the changes that new technologies bring will make our society more sustainable? These dilemmas and paradoxes are the subject of this provocative book. Case studies ask: What articulations of sus-tainability played a role in the design process? What sustainability effects did this technology lead to? Who was affected, where, and when? Could the designer have foreseen these conse-quences? How did the designer anticipate them? How was societal interaction dealt with during the design process?

Environmental EthicsAn Introduction and Learning Guide

Edited by Kees Vromans, Rainer Paslack, Gamze Yücel Isildar, Rob de Vrind and Jürgen Walter Simon

l An ethical training manuall Based on the pioneering work of the

Env-Ethics Project

Today we are becoming more aware of the importance of and our responsibilities towards environmental protection. The causes of our problems are anthropogenic. The number of people working in what might be termed “envi-ronmental industries” or with environmental responsibilities in their day-to-day work has

mushroomed. In many cases, however, individu-als charged with protect-ing the environment have a set of empiri-cal priorities: what is done, rather than moral priorities which consider what should be done. The need to harmonize environmental knowledge with ethical behav-iour and thus achieve behavioural change and the internalization of environmentally ethical values has never been more urgent. This book, developed as part of an EU pro-gramme to diffuse the application of environ-mental ethics to decision-making on pollution control, is a response to the need for a restate-ment of environmental ethics.

“Overall, Moratis and Cochius have presented us with a clear and concise guidebook to ISO 26000. Companies and organizations new to CSR activities will certainly find the book useful as a basic reference guide. Organizations with existing CSR initiatives will also benefit from this volume, since, as the authors suggest, ISO 26000 will likely be applied to increase the credibility of specific CSR claims. Before investing a large sum in the ISO 26000 standard itself (for example, it is available for $223 from ANSI, the national standards body in the US), a better initial approach for sustainability professionals may be to acquire the Moratis and Cochius book.”Ira Feldman, President & Senior Counsel, greentrack strategies; leader of ISO/SR stakeholder group ‘Service, Support, Research & Others’ and co-chair of ‘Environment’ core topic drafting team

Edited by Raimund Bleischwitz, Paul J.J. Welfens and ZhongXiang Zhang

l Why resources are back on the agendal A comprehensive overview of global issues of

raw materials supply and resource use

Written by international experts in their respec-tive fields, Sustainable Growth and Resource Productivity provides a comprehensive overview of global issues of raw materials supply and resource use. It also introduces new views and

perspectives on the sustain-able growth of emerging economies and develops a rationale for a new resource economics. This book emphasizes why resources are back on the agenda: first, because of their fundamental eco-nomic role in technological progress and long-term prosperity; second, because deficits in raw mate-rial markets are now intertwined with deficits in the financial markets; and, third, because the sustainable management of natural resources is a crucial element in responses to new global chal-lenges such as climate change. It concludes with the positing of a new theory of resource economics: an emerging sub-disci-pline that puts resources at its heart.

Edited by Prabhu Kandachar and Minna Halme

l The most comprehensive work published on this nascent topic

l A globally diverse collection comprising 27 chapters and over 500 pages

Although the BoP concept has unleashed an extensive and generally enthusiastic response from academics, businesses, NGOs and gov-ernments, the knowledge domain around this concept is still in the early stages of develop-ment. This book addresses that need with a focus on the needs of the end-users — the poor — as a starting point for BoP products and innova-tions. With contributions from both supporters and critics, it provides a treasure trove of global knowledge on how the concept has developed, what its successes and failures have been and what promise it holds as a long-term strategy for alleviating poverty and tackling global sustain-ability.
