3Preface

Preface

The purpose of the release of the “Greenland Pilot - Explanations of the place names” has been to bring together all the information about the Greenlandic place names, and to provide users of the newly released West Greenland charts to find out about the significance of the place names. The new charts use new Greenlandic orthography as opposed to the older charts as well as some publications that use old Greenlandic orthography. The “Greenland Pilot - Explanations of the place names” have been prepared on information on place names in ”Den grønlandske Lods I, Vestgrønland“, “Den grønlandske Lods, 2. del, Østgrønland“ and “Den grønlandske Havnelods“. (Only in Danish). All place names have been reviewed and updated by Oqaasileriffik – The Greenland Language Secretariat. The publication includes “translation“ / explanation in English of Greenlandic place names specified with both new and old Greenlandic orthography. Latin names regarding the Greenland fauna is taken from the book ”Grønlands fauna, Fisk-Fugle-Pattedyr”, by B. Muus, F. Salomonsen and C. Vibe. Published by Gyldendal 1981. Latin names regarding Greenlandic flora is taken from the book ”Grønlands blomster, Flo-wers of Greenland”, by J. Feilberg, B. Fredskild and S. Holt. Published by Ahrent Flensburgs Forlag 1984. The publication is published only as an Internet publication and can be downloaded free of charge at www.gst.dk.

Corrections to this publication will be published in Danish Chart Corrections on www.gst.dk.

8 Greenlandic place names

Greenlandic place names

Generally about Greenlandic place namesMost Greenlandic place names are a description of the nature or appearance of the location in question rather than an actual name for the place. The same individual place names can the-refore be found in virtually all inhabited areas along the Greenland coasts, and they are often so close together that it can be difficult sometimes to distinguish between places with the same name and explain which of them is being referred to in the given case.On the other hand, Greenlandic place names can sometimes provide information about the appearance and uniqueness of the named location, and can thereby help one to orient oneself when off a part of the extensive coast of Greenland, of which one may have no prior personal knowledge. In order to exploit the aid to navigation that may result from the Greenlandic place names included in the charts, this publication includes list with the English “translation” and/or explanation of the Greenlandic place names occurring in publications and charts.

Changes to place namesIt must be expected that during a transitional period, Greenland Pilot uses place names spelled in both the old and new Greenlandic orthography. Any Danish name will be provided in brack-ets, e.g. Nuuk (Godthåb) or a Greenlandic place name may be added, e.g. Orsiivik (Polaroil),Tuttut Nunaat (Renland), Aqissip Kangertiva (Rypefjord), Nannut Qeqertaat (Bjørneøer), Kangertittivaq (Scoresby Sund) and Kangikajik (Kap Brewster).Furthermore, it must be expected that the new charts of areas that are not currently covered by the charts will contain new names that are not found in Greenland Pilot. It is also likely that Greenland Pilot will contain place names that do not appear on the charts. In the coming years, place names will be officially changed from Danish to Greenlandic for e.g. large fjords, coastal or land areas along the coasts of Greenland. Kronprins Christian Land will become Nuna Kronprins Christian, and Kejser Franz Josef Fjord will become Kangerluk Kejser Franz Josef.
