Dear Grant Committee, Greening Lea, a project of the West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools, has been working with local partners to transform the schoolyard at the Henry C. Lea School into a much-needed green space open and accessible to the community. In 2011, a Master Plan was developed through the Community Design Collaborative to guide the transformation of what is currently an asphalt lot into a vibrant public space. The plan will create areas for active play, quiet contemplation, learning, and athletics while adding much-needed shade and stormwater management to the space. Greening Lea is working, piece by piece, to achieve this vision and last fall built a large planting bed in the schoolyard as a pilot project. The fully realized master plan will transform both the school and the community but it requires significant funding. To date, Greening Lea’s fundraising efforts have resulted in exciting grant awards: a $10,000 2013 PECO Green Region grant (requires $10,000 community match) and a $242,000 SMIP grant from the Philadelphia Water Department. The project is also a finalist for a $75,000 Green School Makeover grant from Global Green. We need your help to bring this project to completion.
