RACISM and FAITH

Discussion with Lunch Sunday, October 20th at 11:30am in the Parlor

Using two books as a launching pad, One Blood, by John

Perkins and Reconstructing the Gospel, by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, we’ll look at the intersection of faith,

racism, and the work of anti-racism.

ALL are welcome, you don’t have to have read the books. Just bring your faith, hope, and love with you.

CHURCH NOTES

GOOD MORNING! Today we gather for the ‘family meal’ of our faith, as we

share bread and cup together at Christ’s welcome table. This Communion

Service is especially significant, as Christians around the world today celebrate ‘Worldwide Communion Sunday’. We are so glad you are here to share in the

life of our church today!

Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a bag

home from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are interested in

joining this church, please just speak with Alida!

At our 9:00 a.m. service, you have been greeted by Deacon Joe Holland, our

Junior Deacons Erik Langeland and Cole Markham, and our Junior Greeters

Casey Smith and Julianna Zold. At our 10:30 a.m. service you have been

greeted by Deacon Joe Holland and Junior Deacons Alyvia Ronning and Ben

Steele. Junior Deacons assisting with Church School are Devenny Widmer,

Kerry McKeon Sophie Nightingale, James Richard, and Emily Wegener.

A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to enjoy

worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across the

street in the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to parents so that they may be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child

misses them! If your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use

of the Parlor (through the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and

through the side doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to play

with toys and a speaker which carries the service!

The flowers on the Communion Table are given in loving memory of Cary and

Tim Peirce on the anniversary of their wedding by their daughters, Jen and

Amanda.

At our Sacrament of Baptism today, we welcome two cousins!

Max Anthony Scavo, born on January 25, 2019. Max’s parents are Matthew &

Kathryn Scavo; paternal grandparents are Joe & Kim Scavo, and maternal

grandparents are Ray & Dawn Defeo. Max’s Godparents are Alex & Ashley

Kubo. The Deacons present a white rose to the family in honor of his baptism

today.

Kai Matthew Kubo, born on September 4, 2018. Kai’s parents are Alex & Ashley

Kubo; paternal grandparents are Art & Sue Kubo, and maternal grandparents

are Joe & Kim Scavo. Kai’s Godparents are Matthew & Kathryn Scavo. The

Deacons present a white rose to the family in honor of his baptism today.

CELEBRATING THE BAPTISMS OF MAX ANTHONY SCAVO

KAI MATTHEW KUBO

Introduction

Prayer of the parents (Matthew & Kathryn, Alex & Ashley):

Loving God, we rejoice in the gift of our sons, who are our heart’s greatest joy! We pledge our lives and our love to them. May all that we say, and all

that we are, lead them towards a strong and sure faith in you. Together as a

family of love, may we delight in each other always. In Christ's name we

pray. Amen.

Godparents’ Vows (Matthew & Kathryn, Alex & Ashley):

Do you promise to be loving friends to your godchildren, and faithful

companions on their life’s journey? We do.

In what you say and what you do, will you show them what it means to be a

person of kindness and compassion, of hope and faith? We will.

And will you listen to their questions, share in their wonder, and help them

to find faith in every moment of their lives? We will!

Congregation’s Promise:

Max and Kai, with joy we take you into our hearts. Here in this family of

faith, we will pray for you always, and surround you with our love and our

hope. By our promises today we are bound together in Christ forever. Amen.

Baptisms

Congregational Song:

Welcome, children, welcome, see our hands reach toward you,

Did you hear our promise to care, to teach, to love you? Welcome, children, welcome, to God’s house today

Now you are invited to learn, to love, to pray!
