Publisher’s Corner

Dear Friends,

This is an exciting year for the environmental movement, sustainability, and environmental careers. The Environmental Career Center (ECC) is celebrating our 30th year since we began helping college students find environmental and natural resources jobs. We started out on June 10, 1980, by publishing a nationwide jobs newsletter typed on a reclaimed typewriter. Thirty years later we are even more excited than ever to help

employers and job seekers connect.

This year marks another important anniversary for ECC. On Earth Day, April 22, 1995, we launched the first environmental niche job board on the web. The original URL was www.infi.net/ECW and represented ECC’s Environmental Careers World. The site evolved to Environmental-Jobs.com and finally to EnvironmentalCareer.com as you know us today. We are grateful for all the kind support EnvironmentalCareer.com continues to receive from employers, professional associations, colleges, and jobs seekers. A great staff really helps, and I want to thank our excellent ECC team for their dedication and hard work.

Of course the most important anniversaries are the 40th anniversary of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Environmental jobs are important and the people in those jobs do make a difference.

Also in 1970, NEPA began to create thousands of environmental jobs, and NEPA expertise remains a high demand skill for many employers in 2010. You should be aware of the premiere green jobs event, Good Jobs Green Jobs Conference in Washington in May ( www.GreenJobsConference.org). I have been invited to speak at the conference on how to be successful in your green jobs search. Also in attendance will be members of the Green Jobs Alliance or GJA (www.GreenJobsAlliance.org). GJA is a nonprofit organization, co-founded by the Environmental Career Center, which provides green jobs training and placement. GJA focuses on assisting military veterans and unemployed individuals by obtaining the training they need to develop careers in the green building, renewable energy, and energy efficiency sectors. Additionally, there is tremendous potential for off-shore wind energy ranging from Delaware to the North Carolina coasts, with one of the best locations about 20 miles away from our Hampton, Virginia office. GJA has been working hard on this initiative as this will bring thousands more jobs to Virginia.

In this issue, you’ll find useful career news and hundreds of excellent job opportunities. We also preview the National Association of Environmental Professionals Annual Conference in Atlanta, April 27-30. The Environmental Career Center is conducting a 2-hour Green Careers Seminar on April 27 from 3-5pm at the NAEP Conference. Stop by, connect with employers, and chat with me to let us know how the Environmental Career Center may serve your college or you better. If you can’t make the conference, please email your comments and suggestions (Subject line: SUGGESTION) to [email protected].

In our next issue of the Green Careers Journal, we’ll provide the list of the top Green Careers fort 2010 and beyond. Plus we’ll report on the NAEP Green Careers Seminar and the Good Jobs Green Jobs Conference. Here’s to celebrating 30 great years Environmental Careers! We look forward to celebrating many more with you.

Best regards

6 Things Green Company Hiring Managers Want To See On Your ResumeBy Stephen Hinton, Managing Director of Hinton Human Capital

Over the past few weeks, I have received a number of calls and e-mails from job seekers asking the following questions: What are green companies looking for in a candidate? What qualifications, skills and experiences should be on my resume? Here are some thoughts for job seekers to consider:

What Do They Want?

Green companies are looking to hire people who can help them meet their goals of profitability, building market share and protecting the planet. While this seems like a cut and dry ideal, it really is not. Let me explain. Most green companies are start-up businesses which must show a profit within a certain period of time. Therefore, their hiring managers are under pressure to find people with well rounded skill sets who can work in multiple roles and learn the primary aspects of their business very quickly. The key for job seekers to get the hiring manager’s attention is a well written resume which showcases their versatility along with the following skills and traits:

1. The ability to create and manage business relationships: You might be thinking “Didn’t he mention this in a previous article?” You are right. However in this particular scenario, hiring managers are not just looking for those who can sell. They are also looking for those have relationships with banks; hedge and sovereign wealth funds; government officials; potential joint venture partners and suppliers. These types of relationships are required to maintain funding levels and facilitate delivery of products, projects and services. To get an interview, your resume should show a track record winning repeat business; procuring resources or resolving problems through your business relationships.

2. Technical Skills: Many green companies are in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) driven industries. These companies want to hire people who can use their technical knowledge to solve problems and have a positive impact on the environment. If you are STEM professional, it will be important for your resume to communicate how your expertise has solved a problem and delivered sustainable results.

3. Financial Management: Accounting and financial regulations are evolving to reflect a company’s impact in social, economic and environmental arenas. Therefore green companies will look for employees who possess in depth financial knowledge and management skills. The ability to manage a budget will be a minimum requirement. Green company employees will have to understand and adhere to tighter financial standards and communicate their performance using financial terms like Return on Investment (ROI) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). If you are person who manages monetary resources, it will be important for your resume to

By Howard Ways, DC Office of Planning

Washington, DC is often thought of as a federal government town. However, the District of Columbia, led by its energetic Mayor, Adrian M. Fenty, is among the leaders in the nation for innovation in the ever-expanding green economy. On Earth Day 2009, Mayor Fenty announced his GreenDC agenda, with the goal of making Washington, DC the most sustainable big city in the U.S.

There are several noteworthy achievements related to “greening” the nation’s capital:

• DC is completing over 8 miles of urban watershed restoration, including the Anacostia River. • DC was first large city in the U.S. to require private developments and government buildings to attain LEED Silver or equivalent green building certification.• DC has one of the first and largest municipal green youth employment programs, the Green Summer Job Corps. In 2008, nearly 400 youth between the ages of 14 and 21 participated. In 2009, the program doubled with more than 800 youth participating. • DC has more than 590 LEED-certified or registered buildings - more than any other comparable city in North America.1

• DC has more ENERGY STAR efficiency-labeled buildings per capita than any other city in the U.S.2

What is a green job? The District defines green collar jobs, or green jobs as career-track employment opportunities in emerging environmental industries as well as conventional businesses and trades, created by a shift to more sustainable practices, materials, and performance. It includes both lower and higher skilled employment opportunities that minimize the carbon footprint of all inputs necessary and directly results in the:

– restoration of the environment – generation of clean energy and improved energy efficiency – creation of high performing buildings – conservation of natural resources

From Green Initiatives to Green Jobs. In the past 3 years, DC has helped to spur a major shift toward sustainable practices by enacting new laws and policies focused on “greening” the city. One example is DC’s green building code, which was put in place beginning in December 2008, with a goal of reducing energy consumption by

Career Outlook

20%. In order to harness the benefits of this policy shift, government, private and non-profit sector leaders need to have an understanding of the future need for green collar workers.

In the summer of 2008, the District of Columbia Office of Planning and the Washington DC Economic Partnership hired the Louis Berger Group, a firm well-known for its work on PlanNYC, a sustainability strategy for New York City, to conduct a first-of-its-kind analysis of the demand for green collar workers in Washington, DC. ESOP Advisors, Inc., the Green Builders Council of DC and Momentum Analysis rounded out the consultant team for the demand analysis.

The demand analysis concluded that while there is no doubt that the private sector is moving towards more green and sustainable practices, there is evidence that District laws concerning green building and energy efficiency are also helping to accelerate the pace of change. Key findings from the demand analysis include:

o DC could create 169,000 green job opportunities between 2009 and 2018, as public facility projects (i.e. schools, libraries, roads, etc.) and private sector real estate projects (i.e. commercial buildings, etc.) begin to develop in compliance with District green legislation and as the city looks toward developing unique new initiatives to achieve greater energy efficiency. While the recent economic slowdown in the economy will make achieving this number challenging, the Federal stimulus may help to jump start the District green jobs effort.

o Most of these green job opportunities are a result of the private sector real estate development projects that are required to comply with the Green Building Act (57,000) followed by the public sector real estate and capital projects required to comply with the Green Building Act (41,000). In the case where the private sector is voluntarily complying with the Green Building Act, about 22,000 green jobs are estimated during the same time period.

o Thirty seven percent of the new jobs would require little or some preparation, such as basic workforce readiness or pre-apprenticeship training. Workers in high demand in this category include: landscapers and groundskeepers; construction laborers; roofers; painters and office clerks. The availability of these jobs, which have very low barriers to entry, presents a promising opportunity for hard-to-serve populations including at-risk youth and ex-offenders. The top growth occupations that require the least preparation are:

o Construction laborerso Rooferso Painterso Landscaping and grounds keeping workerso Office clerks

o Forty-two percent of the new jobs would require a moderate level of preparation, i.e. post-secondary education such as an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree. Workers in high demand in this category include: carpenters; construction trade supervisors; operating engineers and construction equipment operators; electricians (including photovoltaic panel installers); plumbers; pipefitters; steamfitters and energy auditors. The top growth occupations that need moderate job preparation include:

o Carpenterso Construction trade supervisors o Operating engineers and construction equipment operatorso Electricians (including photovoltaic panel installers)o Plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters

o Good salaries can be earned in the growing green economy. For example, for jobs that require little job preparation, salaries can range from $28,000 for a landscaper or groundskeeper to $55,000 for brickmasons and blockmasons. For jobs that require moderate job preparation salaries range from $39,000 for cement

Career Profile

(Continued on page 9)

by Sabine Rogers

Over the next three issues of the Green Careers Journal, we will take a more in depth look at the different career sectors of green building; Design, Manufacturing, and Construction. In this issue we will look at those involved in the design of the building from landscaping to interior design and all that falls in between.

The Product MakersCareer Opportunities in the Manufacturing Sector of the Green Building Industry

Green Building promotes structures (new or retrofitted) that are durable, environmentally friendly, healthy and comfortable. A green building takes into consideration the entire system including energy and resources used in the extraction, manufacturing, maintenance and use of the structure, and the re-use and disposal of all materials involved.

In addition to design and the actual construction of green buildings, materials used are an integral part of the green building industry. So what exactly is a green building product or material? Building materials typically considered to be ‘green’ include rapidly renewable plant materials like bamboo and straw, lumber from forests certified to be sustainably managed, recycled stone, recycled metal, and other products that are non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or recyclable. Add on to this list an ever growing range of products that are sustainably manufactured. From carpeting to caulk, and paint to furniture, more and more products are being manufactured with resource efficiency, impact to indoor air quality, energy efficiency, water conservation and affordability in mind.

Prospects in Green Building Manufacturing

The opportunities in green building manufacturing mirror those in any other manufacturing sector. They include jobs in product design and development, supply chain management, product manufacturing, environmental health and safety, and product management.

Product design and development positions are for individuals with a passion to innovate, such as technical designers, engineers, and drafters. Individuals in these positions spearhead the creation of products that are energy efficient, environmentally friendly, affordable to produce, and functional. The ability to direct and coordinate the fabrication of models or samples; confer with engineering, marketing, production, or sales departments, or with customers, to establish and evaluate design concepts for manufactured products; as well as research production specifications, costs, production materials and manufacturing methods, provide cost estimates and itemized production requirements are required.

These positions will not only require you to have a forward thinking mind but also a bachelors or masters degree in design, engineering and technology or related field.

Supply chain management positions include those individuals responsible for obtaining the raw materials used to create the green building product. These buyers or vendor managers are not only in charge of acquiring the raw materials, but also making sure that the material is sustainably managed, non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or recyclable.

Strong research and evaluation skills, as well as resourcefulness are required! Individuals working in supply chain management for green building products will have to search for suppliers that guarantee the environmental friendliness of their materials.

Buyers and vendor managers must have the ability to analyze information about the market and adjust accordingly, determine how to increase inventory turns, reduce waste, and/or optimize customer service, and forecast demand or create supply plans that ensure availability of materials and products. A bachelor’s degree and customer service related skills are typically required for these positions.

The next positions are those involved in the actual manufacturing of the product. Production technicians and manufacturing engineers set up and operate production equipment in accordance with green manufacturing practices and operating procedures. These individuals are in charge of troubleshooting problems with equipment, testing products for functionality, and inspecting the finished products for quality and adherence to specifications.

Entry level positions require a high school diploma or GED along with some production experience. A two year technical degree or some college is generally required for mid-level positions. You can find general courses through local education cooperatives and community colleges. Along with product design and production opportunities, there is also a need for individuals who oversee the environment within the manufacturing facility. Protecting people, the environment, and equipment from unnecessary harm is the primary objective of occupational health and safety specialists and technicians. These individuals inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices, in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations. They recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials as well as conduct safety training and education programs.

Occupational health and safety specialists in green building manufacturing pay special attention to the energy consumed and pollution created by the manufacturing process. The goal is to produce products with low manufacturing impacts, particularly the impacts to the health of employees.

A bachelors degree or higher is required for these positions. Certification is

In charge of directing and coordinating production, processing, distribution, and marketing activities are the product managers. This includes individuals employed as production supervisors, production control managers and marketing managers.

Preparation for these positions varies, however individuals with a degree in engineering, management, or business administration will fare the best. Those with an undergraduate engineering degree and a master’s in business administration or industrial management will have the best job prospects.

While formal training is required, product managers must also keep on top of the latest production technologies and management practices. As green manufacturing advances this is particularly important.

The Future of Green Product Manufacturing Jobs

Jobs in the green building sector, both new construction and retrofitting, are likely to stimulate jobs in the manufacturing of green building components and systems, including: efficient waste, lighting, HVAC, water filtration, and insulation systems, and energy-efficient appliances. PV panels, solar water heaters, small wind turbines, or geothermal heat pumps are used to provide alternative energy sources for green buildings and will add to green manufacturing jobs as well.

Additionally, as technology advances and new green building products are developed we can expect jobs in manufacturing to be positively affected. So if you have an interest in manufacturing and a passion for sustainability, perhaps the green building industry holds the right opportunity for you!

masons and concrete finishers to $117,000 for general and operational managers.

Impact of the Federal StimulusAlthough the economic downturn that began in September 2008 may delay some job creation projections, there is clearly momentum behind green collar job growth. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“ARRA”) created a boost to this market, containing provisions for new transit investments and the green retro-fit of Federal buildings (particularly concentrated in Washington, DC), among other job creating provisions. To date, the District of Columbia has received over $40 million in Federal stimulus funds for green and environmental projects.

Weatherization is one area where there will be tremendous employment growth as a direct result of the ARRA funds. The amount of homes that could be weatherized may double with the infusion of ARRA funds. The goal is to create a pipeline of work that will extend well beyond the lifetime of the stimulus funds. Other programs and eco-friendly projects that have received ARRA funds include:

• installing green roofs on municipal buildings, • creating bioswales,3 • removing of impervious surfaces, • restoring the tree canopy, • installing high-efficiency lighting at five park athletic facilities, • replacing heating, cooling and lighting equipment, and • installing rain gardens.

Whatever the size of the economic pie, it seems likely that the slice of the pie that’s green will be growing.

As the economic outlook improves, more occupations will shift towards green and sustainable practices. Notwithstanding, the importance of the results of this study cannot be underscored. With an unemployment rate of 12.1% (December 2009)4, the projected growth of the green collar segment in Washington, DC has the potential to provide much-needed opportunities to the city’s population. In order to begin to prepare city residents to take advantage of these new positions, the District has collaborated with several non-profit and for-profit entities to hold several customized trainings for the green construction trades. In the future, as part of the GreenDC agenda, the city will expand weatherization and energy audit programs.

demonstrate your performance using financial performance indicators.

4. Management: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the foundation of all green business practices. Green companies will look for people who are adept at managing people, problems, processes and policy (compliance with laws and regulations) within these accepted guidelines. To get the hiring manager’s attention, it will be important for your resume to illustrate your ability to deliver measurable results in CSR terms.

5. Product Development & Marketing: Green companies have to create products and services which have a minimal effect or reverse environmental impacts. People who understand the marketing research, trends, products and services needed to satisfy the “sustainability minded” consumer while adhering to CSR standards will be in especially high demand as the economy recovers. Join us for the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) Annual Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Atlanta, April 27-30. The NAEP is one of the most respected environmental professional associations, established over 35 years ago. With members nationwide, the NAEP Annual Conference is the place to be if you want to connect to a network of environmental employers and launch or re-launch your career.

This year’s NAEP conference theme is Tracking Changes: 40 Years of Implementing NEPA and Improving the Environment. This is a great theme for job seekers because NEPA, the National Environmental Policy Act, has been known as the “mother of all environmental laws,” and this Federal law helped create thousands of jobs in the United States. The NEPA has been used as a model for similar, jobs-producing, environmental impact assessment work in countries world-wide.

The NEPA is only several pages in length, but it contains powerful language that is amazingly similar to the framework and process for sustainability programs. So if you have been training in the substantive parts of NEPA and Council on Environmental Quality’s (CEQ) implementing regulations and recent guidance, you have learned many of the fundamental skills needed for your career to succeed areas such ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and corporate sustainability.

This year’s conference is filled with workshops, seminars, exhibits, activities and tours addressing a wide range of environmental topics that are important in career development and growth. One of the keynote speakers at the NAEP conference is Horst Greczmiel, CEQ Associate Director of NEPA Oversight.
