Open dumping of waste - a real threat to the environment and to human healthConstrained by budget pressures - struggling to deal with proliferation of municipal solid wasteWe Produce Too Much WasteAttracting early-stage investments has been a universal barrier for all socialentrepreneursMost of the existing financial support mechanisms for social enterprises becomes available onlyafter an enterprise has been operational for a few years. Hardly any support systems are availableduring the initial period of their existence, barring the fellowships offered by a few foundations. For this reason, non-profit social enterprises have suffered due to their complete dependence onexternal agencies for their sustenance. Their options to raise funds for themselves from financialinstitutions have been highly limited.Mission drift is the term given when a nonprofit (or other type of entity) either finds that it has moved away from the organization's mission; or the organization consciously moves into a new direction from its mission statement. Most of the municipal waste models identified in the literature are decision support models and for the purposes of this research, are divided into three categoriesthose based on cost benefit analysis, those based on life cycle assessment and those based on multicriteria decision making. Shortcomings of current waste management models include that they are concerned with refinements of the evaluation steps (e.g. stage four of AHP or the improvement of weight allocations in ELECTRE) rather than addressing the decision making process itself. In addition, while many models recognise that for a waste management model to be sustainable, it must consider environmental, economic and social aspects, no model examined considered all three aspects together in the application of the model. The organization for which we are doing the project is Green Worms. Green Worms is a start up social enterprise born out of two young people while there were wandering across India. The org has been researching and experimenting different sustainable waste management models for the past 6 months. Like every start up enterprise, at times we failed miserably and succeeded joyfully.
