A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORDTHE LARGE CATECHISM

    ORIGINAL SINTENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Condensed from CONCORDIA: THE LUTHERAN CONFESSIONS, copyright2005,2006 by Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Topurchase a copy of CONCORDIA, call 800-325-3040.

Christ redeemed human nature as His work, sanctifies it, raises itfrom the dead, and gloriously adorns it as His work. But originalsin He has not created, received, redeemed, or sanctified. He willnot raise it, adorn it, or save it in the elect. In the blessed resur-rection original sin will be entirely destroyed [1 Corinthians 15:51-57]

On the other hand, we believe, teach, and confess that original sinis not a minor corruption. It is so deep a corruption of human na-ture that nothing healthy or uncorrupt remains in man's body orsoul, in his inward or outward powers [Romans 3:10-12]. As theChurch sings:

Through Adam's fall is all corrupt, Nature and essence human.

This damage cannot be fully described [Psalm 19:12]. It cannot beunderstood by reason, but only from God's Word. We affirm thatno one but God alone can separate human nature and this corrup-tion of human nature from each other. This will fully come to passthrough death, in the blessed resurrection. At that time our na-ture, which we now bear, will rise and live eternally without origi-

nal sin and be separated and divided from it. As written in Job19:26-27, "After my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh Ishall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall be-hold." (paragraphs 6, 8-10)

    Prayer and Study

    Date: August 9-August 15

Luther Quote : Spiritual Strength Comes from Union withChrist: Christ is in earnest when He says that if you believe in

Him, you will abide with Him and He will abide with you. For,says He, I am in you; and if you lack anything, I have righteous-ness, holiness, and wisdom in plenty. I have no infirmity. But if

you have weakness, it is in Me: and I will see to it that I relieve it and drown your weakness in My power and strength, submerge

your sin in My righteousness, and devour your death by My life.
