It is from the grace and favour of Allah Almighty, thathe has made 2009 a year in which our work at GreenLane Masjid and Community Centre (GLMCC) has

flourished. Everything from our regular classes andservices to our da’wah work and community projects hasbeen greatly enhanced.

By the grace of Allah, over 3,000 people come through thedoors of GLMCC on a weekly basis. This figure increasesdramatically in Ramadhan and during our feature eventssuch as conferences. We now regularly cater for differentsegments of our community and educate them in a varietyof languages; from daily classes to monthly workshops toannual conferences. None of this would be possiblehowever, without the blessings of Allah first and foremost, and then the hard and tireless work and dedication of theGLMCC staff and volunteers who ensure the success ofthese activities on a daily basis. The success of the summerand winter conferences of 2009 demonstrates this.

GLMCC has also been able to establish dedicated regularclasses and events catering for ladies, who unfortunately cansometimes be overlooked. In order to make them feel a partof the Masjid, GLMCC has a dedicated Sisters Committeewhich actively works on a daily basis to organise and arrangebeneficial classes and programmes for the ladies.

In order to further assist in the accommodation of all theseclasses and events, GLMCC has made structural improvementsto the building, with the installation of a new carpet in themen’s and women’s prayer halls, as well as the installation ofmoving partitions in the men’s prayer hall. After the blessingsof Allah, it was once again the donations of our generouscommunity which enabled us to complete these projects. Aswell as the improvements, GLMCC has also an establishedfuneral facility and reference library for the community’s use.

The Madrasah has seen many improvements during 2009,with GLMCC focusing much time and resources to theeducation of the next generation of British Muslims. Newsyllabi have been designed and implemented, and thestructure of classes improved with IT facilities and otherresources being used to aid the learning process.

On the youth front, GLMCC has recognised the need toactively engage with our Muslim youth in order to instil inthem Islamic ideals and morals. To this effect, a youthcommittee, ‘Young Ummah’ has been formed whichorganises weekly programmes dedicated to the youth, aswell as one-off special events.

Our wider community efforts have also multiplied inthe last year. In addition to holding weekly motherand toddler groups and a monthly reverts dinner,GLMCC worked with various civil bodies andorganisations to highlight important issues such asroad safety and Muslim children in state schools.Ramadhan is a time to solidify the bonds of thecommunity, and so the Masjid regularly held mini-iftars (breaking of the fast) on a daily basis, as wellas full iftars on certain days for both the Muslim andnon-Muslim community. As well as local communityinitiatives, GLMCC also played an active role inhelping the international Muslim community. TheMasjid raised £51,376 in total for Gaza and heldother fundraisers for natural disasters in Pakistan andIndonesia. In short, GLMCC has moved to work withour neighbours, local communities and schools, civiland government bodies as well as other organisationsin order to foster better community cohesion, andtogether tackle the issues which face us collectivelyas British citizens and Muslims.

All of this and more has been achieved by the bounty ofAllah and through the hard work of our volunteers, as wellas the support of our local community and congregation. However, there is still much more work which needs to bedone. To this extent, we ask Allah that He allows us tocontinue serving His religion and that He blesses ourefforts abundantly as we look ahead to 2010.

Daily & Friday Prayers

Green Lane Masjid has seen hugeattendances at the Masjid. This hasculminated in the use of all availablespace, including the Community Halland Old Masjid Hall for Friday prayers,as well as the car park (weatherpermitting). In order to facilitate thelarge crowds and ensure a smoothflow of people, the masjid has put inplace a rota of volunteers to assistand guide the worshippers. As well asour regular speakers, GLMCC alsooften hosts national and internationalspeakers for the Jum’ah prayers, including Shaykh Abdur-Rahman al-Sudais, the imam of the GrandMosque in Makkah who led thecongregation in August. The regularprayers are also being attended betterthan ever by the grace of Allah.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a very busy time atGLMCC. In order to reflect thespiritual uplifting of the community, the Masjid tries it utmost to ensurethat it provides a comfortableenvironment for worship. A smalliftar meal is provided daily for thosewho wish to break their fast in theMasjid. Extra volunteers are broughtin to manage the added numbersthat come for the nightly Taraweehprayers, with attendees often fillingall three halls and the car park. Thereis also provision made every year forbrothers who wish to perform i’tikaf(seclusion) in the Masjid.

Eid Prayers

The 2009 Eid al-Fitr prayers were held inthe car park for the first time, in anattempt to revive this oft-forgottenProphetic practice of praying the Eidprayers in an open area. The weatherallowed for all three congregations totake place outside. As the Eids comeback to the summer months, this will bea regular occurrence, weather permitting.

New Masjid Carpet

In order to better facilitate thecommunity and allow them to feelmore serenity in their worship, GLMCCreplaced the Masjid carpet, whichafter competing bids was sourcedfrom a supplier in Turkey. The totalproject cost £50,520. We pray thatthis investment will be a sadaqahjariyah (continuous charity) for allthose who donated towards the NewCarpet Appeal for many years to come.

Children’s Evening School(Madrasah)

The GLMCC Madrasah Salafiyyahhas seen huge improvements. There has been some

restructuring to the administration aswell as a new syllabus being phasedin for both boys and girls in the Hifdhand General Departments. The Hifdh(Qur’an memorisation) classes havebeen increased to 3 hours. Studentshave also started to benefit from usingthe library facilities as well as the ITsuite to assist in the learning process.

Religious ServicesEducational Services

There are currently 21 classes intotal with around 250 pupilsstudying in the Madrasah. Thisincludes boys and girls who are inHifdh, nursery and level 1, 2 and 3classes. The Madrasah holds weeklyassemblies for the students, as wellas regular parent’s evenings tofurther strengthen the triangularbond between students, parentsand teachers.

In addition to this, MadrasahSalafiyyah also participated in aprogramme for Teachers TV; theprogramme looked at how Muslimchildren supplemented their schooleducation with Islamic educationclasses on weekday evenings. TheMadrasah often participates intraining courses held by BirminghamCity Council, and also has close linkswith local schools, carrying out jointinitiatives. One such initiative is theLiteracy Tutoring Program held inconjunction with Wyndcliffe School.
