Robert E. Gregg, IIIhead’s greeting
For that, it is with deep gratitude that I welcome you to this year’s Annual Report from Green Hedges.
Leading GHS is a highly joyful experience, and there are many joys I can point to: charting programmatic directions, watching a child develop new-found skills, mentoring young faculty, partnering with parents, welcoming new members to our community, advocating for our graduates… I could go on and on. However, one other joy in my work at GHS, is my quiet, yet incessant, desire to look to the future.
I am incredibly proud and thankful for all we have and all we accomplish at GHS, yet I am also instinctually compelled to envision tomorrow, next year, and the next decade at the School. Along with the GHS Board of Trustees, it is my desire that GHS someday serve the children of our current students, or at the very least, be the standard with which they search for a school in another part of the world. Being visionary requires understanding children’s needs and the educational/demographic landscapes. But, vision also requires imagination, faith, and conviction. Today, we are the beneficiaries of yesterday’s visionaries: those who could imagine a comprehensive program as it currently exists, those who could imagine Kilmer Hall, and of course, those who imagined the Karen Wiechelt Stable, which you will read about in the following pages.
Your gifts of work, wisdom, and wealth to Green Hedges help us realize our dreams. They ensure that we

deliver upon the vision of those who came before us. They ensure extraordinary educational experiences for PS—Grade 8 students. They also ensure that we meet the School’s needs of tomorrow.
On the following pages, join me in celebrating those who made possible our current success. It is with this spirit of gratitude that we carry on. On behalf of the entire GHS community, thank you for your continued support of the School.

THE Green Hedges Board of Trustees is pleased to present a strong financial report for the fiscal year ending June
30, 2014. Continued strong enrollment, positive fundraising efforts, steady non-tuition revenue sources, coupled with astute expense management contributed to another operating surplus. The Board again took the opportunity to improve the School’s long term strength by adding funds to reserves; reserves intended to sustain the school in the event of an economic downturn. The Board’s aim is to insure the School’s long term sustainability to the next generation. Our horizons look bright. Enrollment continued the positive trend begun three years ago. The Green Hedges Fund continued to build momentum begun with the capital campaign for the Wiechelt Stable construction by reaching its highest goal in school history. In addition, our summer camp returned to full vibrancy after being scaled back due to the construction project. Finally, we once again made a strong investment in maintaining a faculty second to none. Green Hedges is well positioned for the future.
Green Hedges School operates with fiscal discipline and prudent management. Our independent auditors, Drolet and Associates, LLC., once again rendered an unqualified opinion and complimented our strong internal control processes. We continue to plan long term while setting our sights high. With your sustained support and stewardship, we will continue to provide our students with an unparalleled educational experience.

Your Support of Green Hedges Made a Difference! Really!
You guided our students. You assisted our teachers. You cheered our teams. You applauded our performers. You encouraged our dreams. You may have come to campus every day, or not even one time this entire year. But with your gifts to the Green Hedges Fund, you joined a strong community of supporters who stepped up on behalf of Green Hedges School.
THANK YOU!
Each and every gift supports Green Hedges and its mission of inspiring young people of talent and promise to develop clear values, a desire for wisdom, and an appreciation for all endeavors which broaden the mind and enlighten the spirit..

Cover Story
The big windows in the Grade 2 classroom frame a view of trees outside, and on this late October day the second story vantage point shows off masses of red, yellow, and orange leaves that lend warm color to the indoor light. It is one year since the ribbon cutting ceremony inaugurating the new Karen Wiechelt Stable. Inside the alcove of the window labeled “south,” where Grade 2 gathers for morning meeting, some students are seated on the ample window seat while others fill out a circle on the floor. Their teacher Emily Weber is reading Margaret Wise Brown’s The Important Book, a book that Green Hedges teacher Karen Wiechelt used for writing prompts and that has found its way into Green Hedges lore.
Later, with students seated at their desks, teacher Robin Schneider invites them to metaphorically put on their “science hats” and make observations regarding “The Important Thing” about the new Stable. Thoughtful, sometimes excited voices respond: “There’s room for all our books, and I like the cubbies. There’s no pole to block my view. We have two whiteboards and a SMART Board [interactive board]. There is a bathroom right inside our classroom, and a sink and drinking fountain.” For those who knew the old Stable, there is also wistfulness for the routines created in the former structure and for the memories anchored there. But the chorus of student opinion is overwhelmingly positive: “There are skylights. We have more personal space. We are not squished when we sit in a circle. We have a new kindness corner. This is our Grade 2 home. Grade 3 is close and we can share ideas.”

“We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.”
~WINSTON CHURCHILL
The original Stable was built in 1883 as a pole barn and, before Green Hedges moved to its Vienna location in 1955, it housed Polka Dot, a pony whose photo is now on display inside the building’s front entrance. Creative use of cramped space enabled the Stable to include classrooms, a library, and offices at various times. At the May 2013 groundbreaking ceremony for the current building, GHS alum and former Trustee Wayne Burstein remarked, “When I attended Green Hedges, the Stable building was the School. The entire student body fit into [one] classroom for daily opening ceremonies, along with Mrs. Kilmer’s baby grand piano!”

Eventually, the old structure could no longer accommodate modern requirements. Dreams about a new building turned into plans. Thanks to efforts by parents, board members, faculty, and administrators, and to generous contributions from many, including major donors like the Fleischer and Rice families, the building became reality. At groundbreaking, former Trustee Kari Fleischer explained the Stable’s new name by saying: “Our family’s wish is for future generations to know of Karen [Wiechelt] and how she impacted so many children and their families. To know of her contagious smile, zest for life, and her dedication to Green Hedges.... It is our hope that with Karen’s name permanently displayed on the Stable that her enthusiastic way of living will forever be shared and remembered.”
The new Weichelt Stable promotes a sense of community for Grades 1, 2, and 3, and its Middle School Mathematics classroom is part of the plan to have older students travel independently between buildings in preparation for doing so in secondary school. The building includes flexible learning spaces for small group meetings and details such as a stairway with two parallel sets of handrails, accommodating people of all heights, and a drinking fountain designed to refill water containers.
In his remarks at ribbon cutting a year ago, Head of School Bob Gregg expressed the feelings of many in the GHS community when he told the students, “I promise you, upon future reflection of these formative years, you’ll understand that GHS’ stewards of yesterday and today invested time, talent, and treasure for you and generations of future students and faculty.” One year after those words were spoken, the feelings of accomplishment and appreciation continue. The important thing about the Weichelt Stable, it seems, is that it was built with love.
“We had the advantage of seeing the old building, seeing the homeyness that we wanted to keep in creating the new Weichelt Stable.”
~JOANNA SCHMICKEL, PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, STABLE
“The old Stable didn’t have such giganormous windows. I feel more comfortable. There is more room to spread out and work.”

Since 2006 when her family joined Green Hedges, Mrs. Blocher has served as a volunteer in many roles within the PTO and in other aspects of school life. The mother of Charlotte, Grade 6, and Audrey, Grade 2, she values the community feel and academic challenge that are hallmarks of the school.
In her spare time, Mrs. Blocher serves as a Wish Granter for Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. She enjoys golfing with her husband, Andy, and her golf team; gardening; beekeeping; and participating in Spartan Races, rigorous athletic competitions that take place along an obstacle course.
Carolyn J. BlocherMrs. Blocher’s career has included consulting, project management, and systems implementation, focusing on the delivery of both technological and strategic solutions to a wide variety of clients. She has used her skills to enhance the overall experience of non-profit organizations, corporations, and financial institutions on several continents.
As part of these efforts, Mrs. Blocher has participated in business model reviews and assessments to help businesses achieve customer care, marketing and business execution goals, and has created models to help organizations track their costs and effectiveness.
Most recently, Mrs. Blocher was with Freddie Mac as a Director of Special Projects, Sales Division. Prior to Freddie Mac, Mrs. Blocher spent 10 years with KPMG Consulting (now BearingPoint), in the commercial and non-profit sectors, developing and implementing technology solutions and performing assessments to increase operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Her portfolio included program management responsibilities for a $750M annual operating budget and 8,800 personnel at over 90 locations across the world. She also served as a key executive in management of a $2.7B defense industry contract vehicle.
Before her work in the private sector, Mrs. Everett served as an officer in the US Air Force. As an Operations Officer she oversaw logistics for aircraft worth $650M that transport the President and other dignitaries. Furthermore, Ms. Everett served as the Installation Deployment Officer and managed over 2,700 mobility personnel from multiple commands and agencies.
Mrs. Everett received her BS from Duke University and completed her MBA at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. She has also completed Executive Education at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Monica Bess Grade 1Love of children and love of teaching are two qualities evident as Monica Bess, Grade 1 co-teacher, describes some favorite moments in her professional life. “I remember when I first began working with young children,” she says, “and I realized how capable they are, how many skills they already have. It gave me such respect for them, and made me want to dedicate myself to helping them grow.”
Mrs. Bess earned her B.S. in Education with a concentration in Early Childhood from Radford University in Virginia and has extensive experience teaching in both public and private schools. She enjoys guiding children’s discovery in all subject areas and attending to their needs for both individual and group learning, a combination that, she says, “makes their learning more meaningful.” Her teaching of reading is guided by specialized training in the Orton-Gillingham Method, an approach that uses a multi-sensory method of teaching and incorporates basic language use rules into lessons, helping young students of all skill levels become stronger readers. She appreciates Green Hedges, she says, because here there is ample time and space given to the learning process, with assessment and administrative tasks in balance. And, praising the school’s long-
standing tradition of honoring the arts, Mrs. Bess points out that teaching the arts has academic and social benefits for students, and can also be used to reinforce learning in other subject areas.
Mrs. Bess enjoys a wide range of activities outside her time in the classroom. If her students travel in the Mid-Atlantic, they might find her on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, river tubing on the Shenandoah River, wearing a variety of costumes at the Renaissance Fair, or reenacting historical events with her husband at a Sons of the American Revolution event. Her interest in history includes reading historical fiction.
Emily Weber Grade 2Emily Weber’s teaching career includes work in classroom instruction and individual tutoring, teaching singly and as part of a team, and interacting with young students from Kindergarten to grade 6. “Teaching children from grades K through 6 has given me a perspective on how children develop and a chance to appreciate where curriculum is

Julie Boncarosky Holmes After serving as a member of the leadership team of Virginia Tire & Auto, Julie Boncarosky Holmes has recently been named President. In addition to other guidance and management responsibilities she has undertaken at the family business, which recently opened its 13th location, Ms. Holmes also spearheads the company’s marketing efforts.
Before joining Virginia Tire & Auto, Ms. Holmes clerked for the Hon. H. Emory Widener, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and was an associate in the corporate and real estate practices at Covington & Burling LLP.
Ms. Holmes, a native of Fair fax County, graduated from Washington & Lee University cum laude and Villanova University School of Law summa cum laude. She also received her M.B.A. from Villanova University.
Growing up in a family where education is important and where the core values of the family business are considered as carefully as the service it provides, Ms. Holmes values the ethos of Green Hedges. In this, her family’s third year at the school, she highlights her regard for the quality of education and the sense of community evident on campus. In her spare time, Ms. Holmes enjoys golfing, travel, scrapbooking, and spending time with her husband, Mike, and their three daughters, Bridget, MFD, Charlotte, MHD3, and Annabelle, age 2.
going over a span of years,” she says, adding, “I like co-teaching because it gives children an opportunity to make a special connection with either one or both members of the teaching team, and it allows us to do more ambitious and intensive work projects. I also like sharing with another professional and learning from each other.”
In her teaching, and during a significant part of her learning, Ms. Weber has favored a hands-on, active model of education. After graduating from Haverford College with majors in English Literature and French, and working in the field of children’s book publishing, she went on to receive an M.S. degree in Elementary Education from the Bank Street Graduate School of Education in New York, a program known for its excellence and its emphasis on progressive techniques. Much of the graduate course work at Bank Street was designed as a prototype of classroom experiential learning. Having experienced the benefits of this approach first hand, Ms. Weber went on to serve as an adjunct professor for a Mid-Atlantic Teacher Institute course introducing teachers to innovative instruction methods in elementary mathematics. At Green Hedges, Ms. Weber enjoys teaching students who are, “enthusiastic and engaged, and come to school wanting to learn.” She also feels at home with the school’s attention to the social curriculum.
In her spare time, Ms. Weber still tutors. She also enjoys hiking and traveling, and has participated in two local choirs, the National Philharmonic Chorale and
Choralis.
Caitilin Mulvey ArtPainter, muralist, fabric artist, book illustrator, and participant in several other artistic media, Caitilin Mulvey always knew that she wanted to become an art teacher. Some of that certainty came from a strong personal connection to several of her own art teachers, and some of it from the satisfaction she remembers feeling as she supported fellow students in their artistic efforts while she was growing up. Although Mrs. Mulvey’s career ambitions during the early elementary school years included wanting to be a Disney animator, her interests soon shifted to the fine arts, where they have remained ever since.
Mrs. Mulvey grew up in Maine and Virginia, with parents who encouraged her artistic pursuits. Her mother, herself an artist, exposed the young Caitilin to the joy of creating. “Art is a personal journey,” remarks Mrs. Mulvey, explaining, “There is something cathartic about art. It is a way of coming into yourself. I want all my students to get personal insight and pleasure from it, to derive some of the benefits I’ve experienced. And,” she adds, “Art also helps magnify the impact of lessons across the curriculum.”
Mrs. Mulvey holds a BFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design and has taught all grades in art school and academic school settings. She enjoys the friendly atmosphere of Green Hedges and the fact that the school honors the arts,
noting that the art room is a wonderful space for teaching and for art projects.
Outside the walls of Green Hedges, Mrs. Mulvey’s artwork graces area schools, restaurants, nurseries, and model homes. She and her husband, who is a chef, have two children, one of whom is a student at GHS. Two of her favorite travel memories are backpacking in Western Europe for five months and spending time
visiting family in Alaska.
Alex Scopeletis Middle School Drama Coordinator“I’m not looking to make you a Broadway star, but I do want to inspire you to love theater,” says Middle School Drama Coordinator Alex Scopeletis. Listening to her describe her own passion for the arts and education, it’s easy to see how she makes that come about. Born to parents whose own lives have revolved around the theater-—her father is a professional actor, singer, and pianist, her mother a classically trained singer, and both parents are gifted script writers-—she grew up enjoying acting and the stage. Mrs. Scopeletis earned a B.A. in Public Communication from American University and, after discovering her love of teaching during a stint as a substitute teacher, went on to receive her M.Ed. degree in Secondary Education from Marymount University. She has taught at the Little Theatre of Alexandria and at Glen Echo’s Adventure Theatre, and has directed plays at Fair fax County Public

Schools, Alexandria City Public Schools, and at the Alden Theatre in McLean. She also offers interactive drama training and management communication workshops to adults.
Ask Mrs. Scopeletis about her favorite aspects of performance, and the answer comes easily: directing, and musical theater. What happens when Middle School students take the stage? “We have a great time. I expect a high level of work, and a high level of enjoyment,” she says, explaining, “Students take part in many aspects of play production. In addition to acting, they conceptualize costumes, make prop lists, and take charge of lights and sound. It’s thrilling when it all comes together.” Mrs. Scopeletis taught Drama at Green Hedges during the 2008–2009 school year and looks forward to directing a production of Seussical Jr. this year. She enjoys tennis and travel, naming Iceland, Fiji, and Tonga among past and future destinations.
piano. Later, when her father’s work took the family to the capital of Pakistan for six years, Ms. Schrettner continued her general and music education abroad, learning to play the recorder and the clarinet. She remembers that time fondly in large part because of her studies at the International School of Islamabad, a small nurturing school with challenging academics.
Back in the United States and attending Oakton High School, “something clicked,” says Ms. Schrettner. “I saw that I could use my love of music as something to share with students.” She enrolled in studies at Virginia Tech, earning a B.A. in Music and an M.A. in Education. Now, finding herself teaching in a school that shares many features of the school she remembers enjoying as a child, Ms. Schrettner remarks, “This kind of school brings out the best in kids. Students can leave their mark and feel a valued part of the community. That’s when children learn best, when they sense that others believe they can succeed.” When she is not teaching, Ms. Schrettner enjoys dancing, hiking, kayaking, and cheering

projects and aspects of school life that are most important to them. Before coming to Green Hedges, Mrs. Ahner led admission and development efforts at several other area schools and in that role noticed the academic strength and grounded self-assurance of GHS graduates, qualities she now attributes to the depth, rigor, and nurturing inherent in the school’s program and philosophy.
Having started life in a small town in South Carolina, Mrs. Ahner graduated from the College of William and Mary, where she earned an A.B. in Russian and Russian Studies and was the first woman commissioned into the US Army through their ROTC program.
