Questions from Jeff Hamstra on New Areas for Growth
AIAA P&E Leaders; Each group director has been asked to provide input to the three questions poised
in the note below. We talked about this during the TAC telecon last week, and Sandy provided some additional comments to clarify the request. If you can spare a few moments, please respond to this note with your thoughts in regards to the P&E Forum and I’ll compile. Any format of input is fine, but please respond by June 24. Restating the questions:
1. Technical areas/topics that are as not as well represented as you think they should be given the discipline and the work going on in related fields.
2. Technical areas where you think a forum has potential to grow and the Technical and Program Committees you think could help drive papers and attendance.
3. Any potential impacts you see for forum attendance such as competitive events or factors that impact Technical and Program Committee participation in a forum.

P&E 2015 Abstracts
Greetings P&E Forum 2015 Technical Area Organizers,
Cathy Chenevey (AIAA) has provided the topic-area template (attached) for the P&E Forum 2015 call-for-extended-abstracts. AIAA is continuing to converge upon this common format/template for the Forums. As I mentioned in my May 19 email, I’d like to have draft call for the topic areas available in time for our Jul 29 Technical Program Committee meeting at the P&E Forum 2014. So please aim to complete the draft call and send to me by Jul 25. We will have some time to finalize the calls in Aug. Again, it is good to work the call for abstracts with your respective TC and PC membership with a perspective of, What should be emphasized today?
As noted on the spreadsheet, you are free to include a more lengthy/descriptive narrative to support your topic area. If desired, please do so as a Word document. The narrative will be available (electronically) as a .pdf, linked to your section of the call.
I appreciate your patience in waiting for this template, and will appreciate your timely response. Please contact me with any questions.
Please note that I have copied the TC/PC Chairs, and Jason Smith (GE Aviation) and Michael Choi (NASA GSFC), who have graciously agreed to serve as P&E Forum 2015 Deputy Technical Program Chairs for the Aviation and for Energy, respectively.
I hope to see you at our P&E Forum 2015 Technical Program Committee meeting, Tues, Jul 29, 1530-1700 hrs., at the P&E Forum 2014. I will be in touch with additional information as we approach our Jul 29 meeting.
Best regards,Jerry Dr. Gerard E. Welch

Charter
The purpose of the Green Engineering Program Committee
(GEPC) is to promote a holistic, systems approach to improved
energy efficiency, sustainability, renewable energy and ‘cradle-to-
cradle’ design. GEPC serves as the AIAA focal point for all “green”
aerospace-related programs and technologies, and works
synergistically with the appropriate technical committees to assure
that the AIAA membership is adequately informed about all aspects
of this critical aerospace activity.

Update
GEPC Membership Actions• We want to encourage “active” members• Make sure your information is recorded in Membership
Spreadsheet1. Report your technical area (Green Aviation or Green Energy) – to
know who to contact for special technical sessions, abstract reviews, policy issues, educational programs, etc.
2. Select your subcommittee position(s) in the PC organization (see charts that follow)
3. Identify any Liaisons - other organizations that you are involved with or want to coordinate with
• Check attendance and participation and “prune” the list (Marty did some of this) and Danielle Soban will make updates

AIAA Experts Database
Currently, the AIAA Communications Team is updating our Industry Experts Database, found at this link: http://www.aiaa.org/IndustryExperts.aspx?id=4746. The AIAA database lists those members of Technical and Program Committees, by discipline, who are willing to provide technical help to the media and other interested, official, parties (writers, etc.)., or speak to other AIAA members about their fields of endeavor. Recently, for instance, the database was used to find experts willing to talk about how satellites interpret telemetry from commercial airliners to help reporters better understand technical documents put out by the Malaysian government in the wake of their recent aviation disaster. AIAA members regularly use the database to find contact information for subject matter experts to either obtain advice or guidance about research pursuits, or to initiate collaboration between members. Over time, the database has become an important communication tool which has furthered the public’s knowledge about aerospace. To be in the database, you should be willing and able to speak with the media, or with other interested parties; be a subject matter expert in a particular discipline; and allow us to list you in the database. If you would be interested in being listed in our database, please contact Duane Hyland at [email protected] with your name, e-mail, and subject area you wish to be listed as an expert in. If you are currently in our database and would like to be removed, please let Duane know as well. Thank you for helping the Institute maintain this critical tool. Sincerely, Duane Hyland Communications Specialist STEM/Workforce Portfolio Manager www.aiaa.org [email protected] 703.264.7588 (direct) 703.835.4867 (mobile) 32

New Standard for ReviewDear TC/PC Chairs and Vice-Chairs:Please see the below notice concerning the new standard available for public review. If appropriate, please forward to members on
your committee. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Barrett at [email protected]__________________________________________________________________________________________New Standard Available for Public Review: Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells
The AIAA Solar Cells and Solar Panels Committee on Standards has revised the standard Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells and it is now available for public review and comment. The original standard was published in 2005. Key revisions include the option of using displacement damage dose methodology to define radiation effects, qualification of cells for any trajectory as opposed to separate tests that confined qualification to just low earth orbit or geosynchronous earth orbit, definitions of minimum success criteria for each test, and characterizations to collect sufficient data to predict electrical performance at a given stage of mission life. As with the previous version, the standard defines terminology and establishes uniform processes, procedures, and systematic methods for verifying the capability of a photovoltaic device to operate in a relevant space environment. This standard applies to all solar cells which operate in space. If interested in reviewing this document, please visit the link below. Congressional Visits Day
53
Make Your Voice Heard – It’s time for CVD 2014 Joaquin Castro On Wednesday, 12 March, AIAA members from all corners of the US, led by members of the Public Policy Committee (PPC) and AIAA Staff, will be converging on Washington DC to carry the AIAA Message of relevance and value of the Aerospace Industry and discuss critical industry issues in civil aeronautics, civil astronautics, and defense with members of Congress, the Administration and their staffs. Through these face-to-face meetings with decision makers, Congressional Visits Day participants raise awareness of the long-term value that science, engineering, and technology bring to America. Even in today’s fiscally austere times that resulted in reduced AIAA financial support to the CVD participants; two week before the event, we have 83 registered participants representing all six AIAA regions in the US. Our goal is to exceed 100 participants and YES there is still time to learn more about CVD and participate (just go to the AIAA CVD website and select “Register Now”).
This year the AIAA Board of Directors has approved seven key Issues (KIs) that shape the AIAA message to congressional members:
Long-term Investment in Technology Development and Transition
Assuring the Viability of the U.S. Aerospace and Defense Industrial Base Developing a Seamless National Cybersecurity Policy Access for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in the National Aerospace System Ensuring a Robust U.S. Human Spaceflight Program
Addressing the Growing Threat of Orbital Debris Building Our Competitive Foundation: Supporting K–12 STEM Education
The issues are expanded with their respective background and recommendations, and the participants are guided by PPC members and AIAA Staff on how to deliver their message.
More detailed information on these issues can be found in the AIAA website.
