You can make a quilt with one of your stitch groups, go together with a friend or two, finish a UFO, or try a new technique. This is a super fun event held at our show, plus a great way to help make money for the guild. The form below is also on the website - 2018 Quilt Auction. If you have any questions, please email, text or call: Kate Meyers, [email protected], 918-200-5859.

Change can be good and we’ve made some changes to the Quilt Auction ... formerly known as the “Small Quilt Auction” at our annual quilt show. Quilts now need to be a minimum of 120” and a maximum of 260” around - or “lap size.” We are only accepting 75 quilts, so you need to get yours in as soon as possible!

Have You Heard of the Quilt Index?

If you have questions about a quilt or artist, a random internet search engine might offer you an unlimited list of websites to explore. But, there's another way to do your research. The Quilt Index represents years of research and development to bring together quilt information in a central- ized online tool for education, research, and public access. With essays documenting exhibitions, galleries curated by invited experts, and lessons plans for educators, the Quilt Index has answers for your quilt history questions. !

As you celebrate National Women's History Month, type in some of the textile artists you've come across! Need sugges- tions? Use the search box in the upper right corner of the Quilt Index and explore: Suzanne Marshall, Laura Wasilowski, Elsie Campbell, Barbara Brackman, Faith Ringgold.

During the Q&A segment by the Acquisitions Committee at the

March guild meetings, members were reminded about the following:

• All quilts and other items must be submitted in a cloth pillowcase

with the entrant’s name and contact information visible on the

pillowcase. • Be sure to get all quilting technique information from your quilter

(stitch-regulated, computer-assisted, etc.) and check on the entry

form all techniques used. (NOTE: If the quilting is computer-

assisted, that automatically includes “stitch-regulated.”) • You must choose a category in which to enter your quilt (see

“Divisions and Categories” sheet), and the number of that

category must be placed in the box at the lower left-hand corner

of the entry form.

All entry forms must be postmarked no later than April 15th. No forms will be accepted after that date. !

If you have questions, please contact a member of Your Acquisitions Committee: Karen Scharf (chair) • Linda Hertensteiner

You may also call me at (918) 407-6177 to volunteer for any of the days. Please leave a message and I will call you back if I’m not able to answer when you call. We are going to have a great show and look forward to seeing all our quilting friends from everywhere.!

Suzanne Marshall in April

We loved the programs provided by Dianna LeClair for March. So many quilts to give us ideas! Our April programs, "Evolution of a Quilter,” are by Suzanne Marshall. The Friday afternoon workshop will be "Wacky Birds Appliqué" with Suzanne showing us how to appliqué a pieced design with-out use of an overlay. Saturday morning will be "Hand Quilting Without a Frame or Hoop.” Because Suzanne’s travel plans have changed, she will be avail-able from 12:30 until 4:00 to help participants from either class at no additional cost who would like to sew with her some more! Please come to the programs and take advantage of the classes offered by this International Award Winning Quilter. You can find her website at suzannequilts.com and look at her great quilts and patterns. Below is the workshop registration and at right are the supply lists for both classes. They are very basic and short so it doesn't take long to get ready for these great classes!

We still have openings for both classes.

Your Program Committee: Linda Weatherly, Aline Dillahunty & Cathy Cheney

Wacky Birds Friday Workshop at Kirk of the Hills Church, April 20th, 1:00 to 4:30

• Scissors for fabric and for paper • Several sheets of lined notebook

paper at least 8" x 11"in size • Scotch tape • Straight pins • Embroidery and appliqué needles • Regular pencil and fabric marking

pencil • Embroidery floss that

compliments and contrasts with your fabrics

• Thread to match appliqué fabrics • Piece of foam board

approximately 8" x 10" in size. • Fabrics: 11" square of

background fabric and fat quarters or scraps of fabric for bird feet, beak, body, wings, small pieces for twigs and leaves.

Hand Quilting Without a Frame or a Hoop

Saturday Workshop at John Calvin

Church, April 21st, 8:45 to 12:30

• 18" x 18" square of fabric basted with thin batting (Polyester preferred) and backing. Use your own method to baste the layers together, but do not use pins. If a student is in the process of hand quilting something, that can be brought along instead of the square of fabric.

FiberWorks 2018 - Oklahoma’s largest and best-known juried fiber arts show will celebrate its 40th year in 2018. This year’s show opens June 15, 2018 at the IAO gallery in Oklahoma City with David B. Brackett as juror. Entry period for digital submissions runs from May 1-20, 2018. Online digital entry forms can be obtained on the FAO website beginning May 1st. The exhibition is open to current residents of Oklahoma and work must have been completed within the last two years. FiberWorks features the best of fiber art from Oklahoma artists, including quilting, weaving, basketry, beading, needlework, and other artistic uses of fiber or fiber work processes. This eclectic show honors quality workman-ship and original design; and is an opportunity for the artists to showcase their work. Eight of our members were accepted last year and their work was very well-received, with several winning awards. Juried in were: Sarah Daneke, Brenda Esslinger, Jan Hawks, Charlotte Hickman, Paula Klaassen, Denise Paglio, Debi Pickens, and Sharon Thompson.

“My Bad” Prize!!

March’s prize for being the first to report a typo or needed correction in

the newsletter went to Teresa Marler!

Thank you and you will now be known as

“Eagle Eye” until the next recipient!

Teresa won a hand-made dress for Eliza.

The next winner will get something

equally not necessarily quilt related!

Page 9: Green Country Quilter · Green Country Quilter ... Come “check ‘em out”! Linda Hertensteiner - Guild Librarian ... Donna Dickmann on the death of her daughter.

Hi, EVERYONE! We NEED you to: l. Register your quilts! We have promised our visitors at least 330 quilts to view. As of last week's meeting, we only had 70 quilts signed up. If you are hesitant, please realize that your quilt will be admired and appreciated by all. 2. Sign up for volunteer jobs. We can't produce a quality quilt show without your help! It is so much fun getting to meet quilt fans . . . to see the delight in their eyes when viewing our quilts . . . to get to meet people who are as obsessed with fabric as much as we are . . . to soak in all the positive comments that you will hear . . . and, most importantly, you get free admission into the show when you sign up to work at least four hours. What a deal!

3. Donate a quilt for the Quilt Auction. Remember that the minimum size is 120 inches around and a maximum of 260 inches. 4. Loan items to the Photo Booth that our visitors can use to take pictures to remind them of the fun they had at Quilt Tulsa 2018. 5. Purchase a sponsorship ribbon for $25.00 that you will award to your favorite quilt. The form can be found in the Quilt Tulsa area on our website. This should be done by April 15 so that we can include your information for printing on the ribbon. 6. Donate new items to the Basket Walk. You may have received a duplicate of a quilting item you already have, and we can give it a good home. 7. Be sure to sell at least $20.00 worth of tickets for our raffle quilt. We are asking each member to sell chances. Won't it be fun to have one of your ”customers” win our gorgeous quilt? 8. Don't forget to get your ticket for Thursday night's Preview Night to view the quilts and find out who won awards. This event is for our members, since you will be so busy during the quilt show. The cost is $5.00. 9. Sign up for a workshop to learn a new skill. Our teachers are from Oklahoma, and several are our guild members. There are some exciting classes to take; I wish I could do them all. 10. Display a quilt that fits our theme of "All Roads Lead To Oklahoma.” It can certainly be one with an Oklahoma reference or one with a state that has special meaning to you.

As your Quilt Tulsa 2018 Co-Chairs, we are excited about the coming quilt show. We know everyone will have a great time at our quilt show because of all you do! By the way, we are in need of a new chairman for the Boutique committee. Rochelle Rice has had to step down

because of a family celebration out-of-state. We also need someone to help sell ads for the quilt show booklet. Please contact one of us if you are interested in one of these jobs. !

Here is the beginning of an article by Teri Christopherson of Black Mountain Needleworks (used with her generous permission). It is so interesting and contains a lot of “wooly” information! This piece will continue in the newsletter for a few months, but stick with us and you will gain a wealth of knowledge! “Working with felted wool or wool felt (yes, there's a difference) is easy and addictive. Felted wool doesn't fray, so you don't need to turn under the appliqué edge. Keep in mind that some projects are meant to be precious heirlooms, worthy of the expensive stuff, while some projects are just for fun. I frequently use pricey, felted wool for the main body of a project with budget-friendly felt for the appliqué. Not just to save money, but because I love the clean appliqué edge you get with felt.

Felted Wool: • Woven wool fabric that's been felted (shrunk), like the

sweater you accidentally threw in the dryer. • This is the good stuff, the expensive stuff, the luxurious stuff.

There's no matching it's lovely texture and drape. • Make your own by throwing wool fabric in the washer and

dryer. But be warned, your house will smell like a wet dog. • You can buy it in many

gorgeous colors, often over-dyed for a variegated look.

• Thicknesses and weaves vary. Smooth, nubby, thin, thick, solid, plaid, or herringbone, whatever appeals to you.

• For appliqué, it gives a rustic, imperfect edge (like this bee).

• I use it when I want the project to drape nicely (not be stiff), or I want the appliqué to have a textured, natural look (like the bee).”

* * * * * Now, let's talk about FELT. Felt is made of bonded fibers and has a flat, consistent thickness, which makes it easy to work with. Zero fraying. Inexpensive, so you can stock up on colors — and it comes in a hundred. I've worked with two types of wool felt: wool blends (usually wool/rayon) and 100% wool felt. I'll explain the differences below. Note: this is not the synthetic felt you find in most craft stores. Wool felt is sold at some quilt stores, higher-end craft stores, and online. From my experience, the wool-blend felts are better at draping and not stretching but look and feel a little “fake,"

while the 100% wool felts have a richer look and feel but are a little stiffer and stretchier.

Wool-Blend Felt (usually wool/rayon):

• Made of bonded wool/rayon fibers. The rayon adds pliability (drape).

• Consistent thickness, smooth finish, zero fraying. • Very inexpensive, so you can stock up on colors. • Gives a perfect appliqué edge. I love it for appliqué. • Looks and feels a little “fake," which isn't noticeable on

small or medium pieces. • Doesn't drape as nicely as felted wool, but drapes well

enough — and drape doesn't matter on some projects. • More pliable (less stiff) than 100% wool felt. • No stretching.

100% Wool Felt: • Made by bonding 100% wool fibers. • Consistent thickness, smooth finish, zero fraying. • Low price, so you can stock up on colors. • Gives a perfect appliqué edge. I love it for appliqué. • Looks and feels better than the blends. Rich color and

buttery soft. • A little stiffer and

stretchier than the blends, which only matters on some projects. (The fuchsia flap on the cover at right is 100% wool felt, so it doesn't fold as softly as felted wool).

• I love it for appliqué (like the fuchsia butterfly at right), where its stiff drape or slight stretchiness will be a problem.” !
