Green Computing

• Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally

sustainable computing or IT.

• It is "the study and practice of Designing, Manufacturing,

Using, and Disposing of computers, servers, and associated

subsystems efficiently and effectively with minimal or no

impact on the environment.

Need of Green Computing

• Today, the main problem of the world is Global warming.

• The atmosphere is becoming hot & is causing many problems

to living organisms.

• Computers also play a major role in polluting the world.


Impact of Computing On

Environment

• Increase in power, cooling and space for data center.

• 2007-$4.5 billion of electricity

• 2011-$7.4 billion of electricity(25 power plants)

• 2011-Double CO2 output ( 62 million metric tons)



Environment• By electronic appliances.

• Desktop requires 85 watts just to idle(Monitor off)

• Left on 24 hrs/day-1,500 pounds of CO2 per year.

• A tree absorbs between 3 and 15 pounds of CO2 each year.



Environment

• According to reports from the German Federal Environment

Office, devices consume around 17 billion (kWh) in a year in

standby mode.

• The CO2 dissipated from ‘sleeping’ devices = 1/7th the CO2

emitted by an automobile.

• Manufacturers do not provide a proper shut-off button in

devices.

• Windows Vista’s default shut down mode is a deep sleep mode

that requires power.



Environment• Hazardous materials inside computers.

• These contain

– Cadmium(damage your kidneys)

– Mercury(neurological damage)

– Lead(disrupt brain neurotransmitters).


Origin

• In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

launched Energy Star, a voluntary labelling program

which is designed to promote and recognize energy-

efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment,

and other technologies.

– Saved $14 billion in energy costs in 2006 alone.

– Widespread adoption of sleep mode

• EPA, is focused on promoting energy efficient

products.

IT Equipment Recycling:

• If you can extend the working life of your IT products, you

reduce the environmental consequences of mining,

manufacture, packaging, shipping and disposal.

• Many organizations, including some manufacturers

themselves, are willing to take equipment back and recycle the

components into new products.

Simple Tasks for Go Green

• Turn your computer and monitor off when you are not using it.

• Enable hibernation using the power management settings.

Standby does not save as much power.

• Replace your CRT screen with an LCD screen.

• Save Your Paper.

• Use Linux (such as Ubuntu), which requires less

resources than many other operating systems on an

older computer as a spare or a file server.

HISTORY OF BPM:-

• Business process management originated from the

domains of total quality

management .

• Business process re- engineering in the 1980s.

• Life cycle management research started during the 1990s

and is still a discussed topic.



DEFINITION OF BPM:-In the BPM, we focus on

“Business processes, combining differentperspectives and their artifacts.”

For example,

A process, its assigned IT resources, and itsintegration into the organizationalstructure—to generate a feasible proces performance.



DEFINITION OF BPM:-For the management of business processes, there

are -

• Number of different process models

• Maturity models

• Languages

• Graphical notations



DEFINITION OF BPM:-“De Bruin et al.” developed a maturity model to evaluate theability of an organization to perform their processmanagement.

This maturity model uses the evaluation criteria: -

•strategic alignment

•Governance methods

•Technology

•people

• culture.



DEFINITION OF BPM:-One of the most widely used language that come with a

graphical notation to represent processes is the –

•Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) .

The main challenge lies in the integration of different

concepts with a holistic approach for Green IT and

Green IS that finally supports the management.

HISTORY OF GREEN IS and IT :-

• Green IS and Green IT first appeared on

“The Research Agenda in 2006/2007”

But has lost some heat in recent years.

•The first article on Green BPM with a

definite impact was published in 2009


Green IS and IT

Green Information System:-•The green information System is defined as “Development that

meets the needs of

the present without compromising the ability of

future generations to meet their own needs”.

•Green IS which includes Green IT encompasses all

IS-based initiatives that support sustainable business

practices.

• In addition the concept of IT greening exists, which

encompasses the design, manufacture, use, and disposal of

computers, servers, and associated subsystems efficiently and

effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment.


Green IS and ITGreen Information Technology:-• Green IT is used as a generic term and multifaceted construct formeasures and activities that aim to increase the energy efficiency of IToperations and enhance the sustainable use of material resources.

• Green IT is part of a fundamental change in the economy andsociety.

• It is a subset of the larger green business trend, which reconcilessustainable business practices with profitable business operations .

From an IS researcher’s perspective

“Green BPM is the sum of all IS supported

management activities that help to monitor and

reduce the environmental impact of business

processes in their design, improvement,

implementation or operation stages, as well as

lead to cultural change within the process life

cycle.”

From Green BPM research developed definition, we can identify three dimensions:-• Dimension one contains management activities, such asplanning, doing, controlling/checking, and acting. It is basedon the four phases of the Deming Cycle , ‘Plan,’ ‘Do,’‘Check,’ and ‘Act.’

• Dimension two contains all stages from the processlifecycle: design, measure/monitor, improve/change, andoperate.

• Dimension three contains the identified goals of GreenBPM: reducing the environmental impact and helping withcultural change within the process chain.

Conclusion

• Green computing can lead to a lot of energy savings, reduction

in emission of CO2 & CFC’s which leads to environment

protection.

• It also leads to serious cost savings overtime.

• Literature review demonstrated that, while there is plenty of

qualitative literature published, most articles contain informal

concepts or ideas.


Initial research question of this paper is :-What defines Green Business Process Management?- Based on our structured literature review we assert that from an IS

researcher’s perspective Green BPM is the sum of all IS-supported

management activities that help to monitor and reduce the environmental

impact of business processes in their design, improvement,

implementation or operation stages, as well as lead to cultural change

within the process life cycle.

Second research question of this paper is:-Which fields of action exist and how can research gaps be

closed?

- For this matter we were able to identify three dimensions from the

body of literature: management activities, process stages, and Green

BPM goals.
