Introduction..
Need of the Hour: Use & Manage Water Better
Water Vital Resource
•Major component for most industrial processes
•Critical for sustaining life – Human consumption,
food security
•Increasingly scarce and polluted
• Conventional Sources :
• Surface Water
• Ground Water
• Non Conventional / Alternate Sources
• Recycled Waste Water
- Industrial Waste
- Domestic Sewage/Sullage
• Sea Water

Water Crisis – In India
India expected to be severely water stressed by 2025.
This also relates to food.

SESSION OBJECTIVE
To share our experience & capabilities in creating new sustainable sources
of water through Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems
HOW WATER EFFICIENT IS INDIAN INDUSTRY?
Country Industrial water use (billion cubic metres)
Industrial productivity ( million US$)
Industrial water productivity (US$/cubic metres)
Argentina 2.6 77,171.0 30.0
Brazil 9.9 231,442.0 23.4
India 15.0 113,041.0 7.5
Republic of Korea 2.6 249,268.0 95.6
Norway 1.4 47,599.0 35.0
Sweden 0.8 74,703.0 92.2
Thailand 1.3 62,800.0 48.9
Water use efficiency in Indian Industries continues to be much lower when compared to some other developing countries in the world

COMPARATIVE WATER USE BY INDUSTRY
Waste Water Recycle &
Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)
- Raw water scarce
- Raw water cost high
- Strict discharge regulations
- ISO 14001
- Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
SELECTION CRITERION
• Complex & difficult to treat waste water
• Completely integrated solution
• High recovery systems (≥85%)
• No liquid discharge
CHALLENGES
• Water intensive industry
• Water stressed area
• Little availability of raw water
• Cost of raw water high
• Strict discharge regulation
• Customer wanted assured supply of raw water with consistent quality

RESULT
• Assured availability of water for process and other use
• Low dependence on fresh water supply
• Reduced requirement of fresh water resulted in savings
• Consistent quality
• Compliance with effluent discharge norms
• Enhanced corporate image
How much water is needed/person ?
• Bathing – 55 ltrs
• Toilet flushing – 30 ltrs
• Washing of cloths – 20 ltrs
• Cooking/Drinking/washing utensiles -30 ltrs
• Total 120-150 Ltrs/Person/Day
Alternate Sources
• Waste Water can be an sustainable source of Water
• Community Sewage can be effectively recycled for Industrial as well as secondary uses in Communities
• Industrial waste water is an excellent resource for Industrial uses

TREATMENT PLANT (NGPSTP)
• FLUIDISED MEDIA REACTOR (FMR)
• MEMBRANE BIO-REACTOR (MBR)
OBJECTIVE OF BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT
OF WASTEWATER
• Main objective is to remove organic matter from
wastewater in a natural way without using toxic chemicals
• Other objective can be to remove other than organic matter
such as ammonia/ heavy metals/ toxic organic chemicals
like cyanides, phenols, etc.
• ORGANIC MATTER in wastewater is measured in terms of BOD
(biochemical oxygen demand) or COD (chemical oxygen demand).
• BOD is defined as the amount of oxygen required for the biological
decomposition of organic matter under aerobic conditions at a standardized
temperature and time of incubation.
• COD is the amount of oxygen required for complete oxidation of organic
compound into carbon dioxide and water with the help of strong oxidizing
agents such as potassium dichromate.
TERMS USED IN BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT
BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT CAN BE
AEROBIC which requires oxygen for their activity
OR
ANAEROBIC which does not require oxygen and produces
methane as a by-product for possible use as energy
