Reduce Reuse Recycle

We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us

Sir Winston Churchill

Objective:

Endeavour to Zero pollution building and not to increase

Global warming

Global warming

Increases in average temperature of the air and sea at Earth's surface.

Most of global warming is being caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities.

A greenhouse gas ( GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect.

Percentage contribution to the greenhouse effect on Earth the four major gases are water vapor 36–70%carbon dioxide 9–26%Methane 4–9%ozone, –7%

The most largest driver of global warming is Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion Cement production and land use changes such as deforestation.

Objective:

Ensure shelter safety against Flood, Fire, theft, Earthquake , etc..

Effort to build sustainable homes

Objective:

Self-reliance building in Energy (Zero Energy Building)

Optimum utilization of Land & Building

In India 40% of total pollution are made from Construction Industries only.

A green building is one which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building

System Analysis

Decentralized system

Energy – Electricity Produced at site. Avoid Transmission loss.

Waste – Solid waste recycled. Avoid transportation.

Water – Water taken at site and wastewater recycled.

Mo(u)ldMold is a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae, produce mycotoxins that can pose serious health risks to humans such as watery, itchy eyes, a chronic cough, headaches or migraines, difficulty breathing, rashes, tiredness, sinus problems, nasal blockage and frequent sneezing.

Mold growing on a Clementine

Mold in the home can usually be found in damp, dark or steamy areas e.g. bathroom or kitchen, cluttered storage areas, recently flooded areas, basement areas, plumbing spaces, areas with poor ventilation and outdoors in humid environments.

To reduce moisture levels that

can facilitate mold growth. Removal of affected materials after the source of moisture has been reduced and/or eliminated may be necessary for remediation.

BUREAU OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Embodied energy

Embodied energy is the total energy required for the extraction, processing, manufacture and delivery of building materials to the building site.

Energy consumption produces CO2, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, so embodied energy is considered an indicator of the overall environmental impact of building materials and systems

Example: Material - E.E inMJ/Kg - E.C in Kg

Cement 4.6 0.83 Steel 24.4 1.77 Bricks 8.4 0.62 Aluminium 155 8.24 Timber 8.4 0.46 Glass 15 0.8 Paint 20 1.0 E.E - Embodied Energy

E.C - Embodied Carbon

Procurement materials nearby and avoid long transportation

Alternate to Clay Bricks

The clay brick kilns emit high concentration of carbon monoxides, NOx (nitrogen oxides) and oxides of sulphur (SOx) that are harmful to eye, lungs and throat. These air pollutants stunt the mental and physical growth of children.

Also, nearly 25 to 26 per cent of the country’s wood production are used for burning bricks every year, causing deforestation.

Digging the clay (approximately 3.5 kg per brick) from land affects the agriculture and mass imbalance.

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (ANALYSIS)

LCA is a technique to assess environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product's life from-cradle-to-grave i.e. Construction to demolition.

Here we assume life of Building for 40 years.

PRE OCCUPATION

1. Procurement - Embodied Energy

We can't build without E.E, but we can reduce and save.

2. Construction – Operational Energy

We can't construct without O.E, but we can reduce and save.

POST - OCCUPATION

1. Post occupation – Operational

Energy We can control O.E after client occupation by replacing renewable sources.

2. Renovation and repair works– Operational Energy

We can’t eliminate but we can limit the scope of works.

3. Demolition Energy –Operational Energy

We should spend some amount of energy.

Tangible Benefits

Energy-Electricity

Approximately we can replace and save electricity 10 unit per day -3650 unit per year

And save transmission loss approximately 1564 unit (30%) (5214x0.7=3650)(5214-3650=1564)

Energy-Fuel

Replace 3 LPG cylinders per year

Water

Save 4380 Liters per year and replace 1 person water consumption for 32 days or 4 persons for 8 days

Approximate calculation

For 1 person each flush save 3 Liters per day

For 1 year 3 x 365 =1095 Liters For 4 persons 1095 X4= 4380 Liters per year

Per capita 135 LitersFor 1 person 4380/135= 32 daysFor 4 persons 32/4= 8 days

Water

Save 40,000 Liters of water from pumping to take coal per year

Indirectly we can save water.

(0.0005925 metric tons CO2 per kWh) ie for 1 KWh power production 0.5925 Kg coal required. ( For mining one tonne of lignite, about 13 tonnes of water has to be pumped out) ie for 1KWh power production 7.7 litres to be dewatered.

Solid Waste disposal

Approximately reduce 250 Kg Solid biodegradable waste disposal per year (0.7 Kg per day) and avoid transportation.

Rain Water Harvesting

Save 22,275 Liters per year and fulfill 1 person water consumption for 165 days or 4 persons for 41 days

Approximate calculation

Roof top Area – 55 SqmAnnual Rain fall – 900 mm avg Assume 50% ProbabilityAnnual Rainfall -450mm Co efficient 0.9Total Rain water Harvesting -55x0.9x450 =22,275

LitersPer capita 135 LitersFor 1 person 22275/135=165 daysFor 4 persons 165/4= 41 days

Wastewater disposal

Approximately reduce 1,00,000 Liters waste water disposal per year

Approximate calculation

Assume Per capita 70 Liters per day

For 1 person for 1 year 70 X 365 = 25,550 Liters

For 4 persons 25,550 X 4= 1,02,200 Liters

Financial

Save Rs 25,000 per year

Earn Rs 5,00,000 after 30 years and maximum of Rs 20,00,000

Approximate calculation

Electricity 3650x5 =Rs 18,250 LPG cylinders - 450x3 =Rs 1,350Vegetables approx-150x12 =Rs 1,800Drinking Water -120x30 =Rs 3,600Total =Rs 25,000 per year

Teak wood after 30years 1 tree 20 cft X Rs 2,500/cft = Rs 50,000For 10 trees = Rs 5,00,0001 tree 20 cft X Rs 10,000/cft = Rs 2,00,000For 10 trees = Rs 20,00,000

Intangible Benefits

Health

House owners ensure oxygen supply from garden trees (10 Nos) and plants

Approximate calculation

Demand 550 liters per day per person

Supply 210 liters per tree per day 2.5 trees fulfill one person

requirement A family of 4 persons can be supplied

enough supply of Oxygen in daytime by 10 trees

Food

House owners get organic fresh vegetables and fruits

Top soil preservation (anywhere)

For one brick digging the clay

approximately 3.5 kg. For one ordinary residential building 15,000 Nos. x 3.5 Kg = 52,500 Kg

or 52.5 tonnes.

Environment Approximately we can control 2.5 tons of Equivalent CO2 emissions per year by Solar panels, windmill, solar water heater, etc

Satisfaction of # Constructed Green

building with less pollution.

# Got a Healthier space to occupy.

# Contributed not to increase global warming.

# Got Opportunity to

serve society ( Rain water harvesting, tree plantation, control CO2e emission etc…)

# Gained Peaceful and Happy

Life

HAPPY FAMILY

Thank you
