Dear Potential New Members,Welcome to Panhellenic Membership Recruitment 2015! We are extremelyexcited that you have decided to begin your journey into our sisterhood. TheSalisbury University Panhellenic Association is here to help guide you throughthe sorority recruitment process. We have been busy making preparations forthis week since your arrival on campus in August. It is our hope that you takethis opportunity to learn as much as you can about all of our wonderfulsororities and make some great friends along the way.

With just over 250 undergraduate sisters and thousands of successful alumni,the Salisbury University sorority community is steeped in tradition andexcellence. Year in and year out, our chapters produce some of the best andbrightest student leaders and provide a critical support network for collegiatesuccess. As value-based organizations, our sororities exist to promote highacademic achievement, citizenship, leadership development, friendship andpersonal growth.

Be sure to read all of the information included in this MembershipRecruitment Guide. It should answer many of your questions and explain theentire process from registration through Bid Day. As stressful andoverwhelming as recruitment may seem, it is designed to help you make aneducated decision. Remember that in only a few days time, you will bechoosing lifetime membership in only one sorority. Participate in recruitmentwith an open mind and decide for yourself where you feel most comfortable.This week is all about you!

Academic EligibilityIndividual sororities may have higher GPA eligibility standards than the Salisbury UniversityPanhellenic Association.

The Salisbury University PanhellenicAssociation practices a deferredjoining policy, meaning that the first-semester freshmen are ineligibleto affiliate with a sorority. In order toparticipate in membershiprecruitment, you must:• Be a regularly enrolled, full-timeSalisbury University student taking atleast 12 college credits this semester

• Have earned at least 12 collegecredits

• Have earned at least a 2.5 GPAYour academic eligibility will be

verified prior to the beginning ofmembership recruitment.

Students with transfer credits maybe required to provide a copy of theirSalisbury University Transfer CreditReport to verify their GPA. Thesepotential new members should bringthis documentation with them thefirst night of recruitment.

Recruitment CounselorsYour recruitment counselor, alsoknown as “Rho Delta,” will be one ofthe most important women who youwill meet during membershiprecruitment. Your Rho Delta isprepared to assist you throughout

the recruitment process, provideinformation regarding event time andscheduling, and answer any questionsthat you may have about Greek life.Never hesitate to ask her a questionor discuss your feelings with her.Keep in mind that your Rho Delta is arepresentative of the PanhellenicAssociation. She is completelydisaffiliated from her sorority,meaning that she attends norecruitment events and is completelyunaware of the individual women whoher chapter is recruiting. She hasbeen trained to provide you with fairand unbiased advice. Take time toget to know your Rho Delta. Not onlydoes she possess valuableinformation and insight about themembership recruitment process, butalso she is eager and willing to helpwith whatever you need.

Bill of Rights for Potential New Members• The right to be treated as anindividual.

Recruitment Guidelinesfor Potential NewMembers• A potential new member isineligible for membershiprecruitment if she has already been initiated into a NationalPanhellenic Conference sorority.

• A potential new member is ineligiblefor membership recruitment if shehas been a new member of aNational Panhellenic Conferencesorority at Salisbury Universitywithin the past calendar year.

• A potential new member mustprovide her own transportation to and from membershiprecruitment events.

• A potential new member shouldcontact the Panhellenic Associationand her recruitment counselor if shedesires to withdraw from themembership recruitment process.

• No sorority member may buy orgive anything to a potential newmember.

• If a potential new member acceptsan invitation and fails to attend arecruitment event withoutsubmitting an absentee form priorto the event, she will be ineligibleto continue in membershiprecruitment. In the event of ascheduling conflict, illness oremergency, it is the potential newmember’s responsibility to notifythe Panhellenic Association and herrecruitment counselor.

• Throughout the entire membershiprecruitment process, the potentialnew members may only visit andhave contact with each sororitywithin the designated recruitmentschedule.

• Casual conversations betweenpotential new members andindividual sorority members outsideof the designated recruitmentschedule shall be kept friendly, briefand off the topic of membershiprecruitment. Only sorority memberswho currently live with a potentialnew member may be in her place ofresidence during membershiprecruitment, and vice versa.

• All recruitment-related questions orissues should be directed to eitherthe Panhellenic Association or arecruitment counselor only.

• A potential new member should notgive a promise, either verbal orwritten, to join a certain sororitybefore bids are issued through thePanhellenic Association.

• A potential new member willcomplete the MembershipRecruitment AcceptanceAgreement after the PreferenceRound. This is a binding contractonce it has been signed, and nochanges may be made.

• Any potential new member whosigns the Membership RecruitmentAcceptance Agreement and receivesa bid at the end of membershiprecruitment will be bound by theagreement for one calendar year atSalisbury University.

• At no point should a potential newmember be encouraged to“intentionally single preference.”This is defined as failing to acceptany invitation for a membershiprecruitment event for which therewas room in her recruitmentschedule or failing to list all sororitiesattended during Preference Roundon the Membership RecruitmentAcceptance Agreement.

Recruitment Tips for Potential New Members• Manage your time wisely. It’s a busyweek for everyone, so make surethat you’re not neglecting otherareas of your life.

• Be courteous by being prompt.Recruitment events are scheduledto begin and end at certain times,so please be on time.

• Be yourself. Our sisters are interestedin getting to know the real you. Don’ttry to adopt a different personalityduring recruitment. Be honest withyourself and the sisters.

• Meet as many of the sisters aspossible. There will be severalrounds of voting throughout theweek, so you’ll want to make alasting impression.

• Ask lots of questions! Learneverything that you can about theexpectations and responsibilities of sorority membership. This is abig commitment and you need toknow exactly what you’re gettingyourself into.

• Think about why you want to join asorority. Be able to summarize howyour unique background and skillscan benefit the organization.

• Think about how you can contributeto the sorority. Be able tosummarize how your uniquebackground and skills can benefitthe organization.

• Go into recruitment with an openmind. While you may have oneparticular sorority in mind, weencourage you to keep all youroptions open. Get to know eachorganization so that you can makean educated decision. Alwaysremember that this is a mutualselection process.

• Follow your instincts and trust yourown judgment. The sorority that isbest for your friends may notalways be the best one for you.Find the sorority in which you feelmost comfortable.

• Relax and have fun! Recruitment is a time to make new friends andexplore the many opportunities thatGreek life has to offer.

Hazing PolicyHazing is defined as any intentionalor unintentional action taken orsituation created, whether on or offcampus, to produce mental or physicaldiscomfort, embarrassment, harassmentor ridicule for the purpose of initiation,admission or as a perceived conditionof continued membership into anystudent organizations, including sportsclubs, athletic teams, fraternities orsororities that operate under thesanction of Salisbury University. Hazingis also defined in accordance with anylocal, state or federal law or UniversitySystem of Maryland or SalisburyUniversity policy.

Such activities and situations mayinclude, but are not limited to:• Any activity that causes or requiresthe student to perform a task thatinvolves violation of the UniversityCode of Conduct, or local, state orfederal law.

• Any activity requiring the consumptionof food, alcohol, liquid, drugs orother substances.

• Any type of physical activity such assleep deprivation, exposure toweather, confinement in a restrictedarea, required calisthenics, exerciseor other games requiring physicalexertion, or other activity thatsubjects the student to a risk ofharm or that adversely affects themental or physical health or safetyof the student.

• Any activity that intimidates orthreatens a student with ostracism,that subjects a student to mentalstress, embarrassment, shame orhumiliation, or that adverselyaffects the mental health or dignityof the students, or discourages thestudent from remaining in school.

• Any type of physical or mentalbrutality including, but not limited to,whipping, beating, striking, branding,electronic shocking or placing aharmful substance on the body.The expressed or implied consent

of the victim will not be a defense.Even if the victim of hazing consentsor willingly participates, the behavioris still considered an act of hazing andis a violation of the Code of Conduct.

Failing to either intervene, prevent,discourage and/or report those actsmay also violate this policy.

During this time, you may ask any questions you have about formal recruitmentand it’s process. You also will beintroduced to the Rho Deltas who will be helping to guide you throughyour recruitment process.
