striking change appears in Greek art of

the seventh century B.C., thebeginning of the Archaic period. The

    abstract geometric pattern that was

dominant between about 1050 and700 B.C. is supplanted in the seventh

century by a more naturalistic style

    reflecting significant influence from

    the near east and Egypt

    In addition to numerous marble

    figurines, the Keros-Syros culture

    (ca. 27002400/2300 B.C.) in the

Cyclades produced particularly finemarble vessels that reveal a

mastery of the material and an

    appreciation of form.

    This marble spouted bowl is

    distinguished by its unusually large

size, the thinness of its walls, and thedelicate articulation of the spout in the

front and the horizontal lug in the

back. It stands securely but also fits

the hand perfectly for pouring water,

oil, or perhaps even paint, since tracesof color remain on some of the forty

    preserved examples.
