• Characteristic of the “heroic” age of battle – this formation emphasizes 1-on-1 battles and glory
Phalanx FormationHOPLITE FORMATION: • Greek generals trained their
soldiers to fight in lines, shoulder to shoulder.
• In this way each man was protected by the shield of the man standing next to him.
• When they all marched forward together, no enemy spears or arrows could get through their wall of shields
• forward momentum breaks through lines (think “scrum” in a rugby match)
How to Make Your Own Phalanx
1. Train your soldiers well. They must never flinch or run away. A single man leaving the line will collapse the entire formation
2. Equip them properly, everyone needs a shield and a spear at least!3. Practice the formation. Timing each move is essential, no one can move ahead or
fall behind4. No Heroes! Emphasize to your men that there is no “I” in team5. Enjoy your new, unstoppable formation and the spoils of war
