Greece, Turkey & Croatia Overview

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed they received the Mediterranean as a gift from the Gods. The area offers a beautiful temperate climate, gentle landscapes, glorious beaches and a sparkling sea, making it hard to resist the lure of the Mediterranean and everything this famous region has to offer. Nowhere else on earth is there such a density of archaeological and religious sites, along with some of the World’s most glorious and prized architecture.

The Mediterranean offers thousands of islands with sun drenched beaches and warm waters in a rainbow of paradisiacal settings, famous gastronomy, shopping and nightlife. The Mediterranean diet is very healthy and is prized for seafood, olives, capers, cheeses, lamb and a huge variety of fruit. Marine life includes dolphins and whales, sea turtles and rays and a wonderful array of colorful fish.

The Mediterranean is home to one of the most culturally and geographically diverse regions of the world with everything from mountainous terrain to a perfect mixture of Aegean and Mediterranean water, sun and culture, a country where forests meet the sea.

From the rugged hillsides of Crete with its long sandy beaches and fertile valleys to Rhodes with a virtual treasure trove of art and history, the Mykonos sun will astound you. Athens remains a city of contrasts, being the oldest city in Europe, with an undeniable soul.

Imagine a country modern yet with a healthy oriental flavour, where the beaches are picture perfect and backed by ancient ruined cities, where you can kayak over sunken cities, discover great cuisine and friendly people – welcome to Turkey!

Be captivated by the pureness and glamour that is today’s Croatia. Cities that blend tranquility with the finer aspects of city living, with clean and untouched nature, rich in culture and history. Explore the many hidden corners, green parks, picturesque open-air markets, theatres, museums and sample the bohemian cafes and bars.

Cruising is a fantastic holiday option for the Mediterranean. It is also a great choice for people who want to relax and rejuvenate. When you cruise, you are able to enjoy world-class facilities, excellent service, fabulous food and exciting ports of call. The variety of ships and itineraries on offer is endless.

Like all great expeditions, adventures and legends, the most memorable voyages always begin at sea. A cruise is so much more than simply taking a much-needed break from our everyday lives - but is an ultimate opportunity to gain a wealth of experiences. Each moment aboard and on shore leads to the discovery of something new and exciting.

There are many different learning activities you can participate onboard a Mediterranean cruise. Wine tasting, art, lectures and cooking classes are just a few experiences you can benefit from. Or if you prefer, laze by the pool or stroll under the stars all while enjoying the refreshing sea breeze.

When you go to sleep each night you can dream about the exciting place you will wake up in the following morning. It doesn’t matter where you are, you will be sure to have a cultural, interesting experience all filled with the beautiful sights of the Mediterranean.

Explore the Mediterranean your way.

Greece Overview

There is something mystical and magical about Greece that makes it one of the most popular destinations on the planet. The alluring combination of history and hedonism attracts all sorts. Within easy reach of magnificent archaeological sites are breathtaking beaches and relaxed tavernas serving everything from octopus to ouzo. It’s a combination that makes for guilt-free travel – throw in welcoming locals with an enticing culture and captivating music, and it’s easy to see why most visitors head home vowing to come back.

Adrenalin-focussed travellers can mountain climb, hike, windsurf, dive and even hit the ski slopes. Party types can enjoy pulsating nightlife in Greece’s vibrant modern cities and on islands such as Mykonos, Ios and Santorini. Wanderers can just island-hop to their heart’s content.

Perhaps, though, the true allure of Greece is due to less tangible attributes – the dazzling clarity of the light and the Aegean waters, the floral aromas that permeate the air, the spirit of the place – for there is hardly a grove, mountain or stream that is not sacred to a deity, and the ghosts of the past still linger everywhere.

Among the myriad attractions, travellers to Greece inevitably end up with a favourite site they long to return to – get out there and find yours.

OUR TOP PICKS FOR GREECE1 The Acropolis The most iconic monument of ancient Greece.

2 Santorini World-famous destination where a sophisticated lifestyle and Greek culture merge with spectacular landscapes.

3 Rhodes Meander through the atmospheric streets of the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe.

4 Delphi Navel of the ancient world and home to the famous oracle that influenced the course of Greek history.

BEST TIME TO TRAVELSpring and autumn are the best times to visit Greece; specifically May, June, September and October. Most of the country’s tourist infrastructure goes into hibernation during winter, particularly on the islands (and in some places you’ll be hard-pressed to find a hotel or restaurant open). Some of the smaller islands close completely as islanders head off to alternative homes on the mainland for a few months. Many hotels, seasonal cafes and restaurants close their doors from the end of October until mid-April; bus and ferry services are either drastically reduced or cancelled.

The cobwebs are dusted off in time for Orthodox Easter (usually in April), when the first tourists start to arrive. Conditions are perfect between Easter and mid-June, when the weather is pleasantly warm in most places; beaches and ancient sites are relatively uncrowded; public transport operates at close to full schedules; and there’s a bigger variety of accommodation options to choose from.

Mid-June to the end of August is high season, when everything is in full swing and the majority of festivals take place. The high season starts to wind down in September and conditions are ideal once more until the end of October.

By November the endless blue skies of summer have disappeared. November to February are the wettest months and it can get surprisingly cold. Snow is common on the mainland and in the mountains of Evia and Crete; it even occasionally snows in Athens. But there are also plenty of sunny days and some visitors prefer the tranquility that reigns at this time of year.

Island hopping is the best and easiest way to explore the Greek islands, especially if you are a first time traveller to the region. Island hopping provides variety and showcases the diversity of each of the islands – expect to see stunning natural vistas, picturesque towns, white-washed villas and postcard-perfect beaches as you explore.

Use Adventure World's expertise or opt to build your own itineraries. Below are some of our best selling combinations, but feel free to mix and match to create your own perfect Greek island hopping experience.

Our map below shows you the geography of the islands and helps you plan your trip with ease. It is generally considered easiest to travel between islands belonging to the same ‘group.’ The most popular group of islands is the Cyclades, including Mykonos, Santorini and Naxos, amongst others. The Dodecanese islands include Patmos, Kos and Rhodes.

Adventure World will always book hydrofoils unless only ferries service your specified route. Hydrofoils offer a quicker service, allowing you maximum time to enjoy the islands. In the case of overnight ferries, we recommend cabins for a more comfortable journey.

HYDROFOIL/FERRY TIMESSchedules are released in advance, but not confirmed until one month prior, meaning advance timetables can change without notice or even be cancelled. Your hydrofoil or ferry will be booked for your requested dates, and you will find out exact times on your arrival in Athens. Our local operator will be on hand if there are any last minute changes. Below are approximate durations for hydrofoil and ferry services.

Turkey’s charms range from sun-splashed Mediterranean and Aegean beaches to Sultanahmet’s mosques, and while these gems fi t its reputation as a continental meeting point, the country can’t be pigeonholed that easily. Many of its attractions are completely unlike anywhere else on the planet, such as Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys and Pamukkale’s white travertine (calcium carbonate) shelves and pools. The ethereal beauty of Mt Nemrut, littered with giant stone heads, and Olympos, where Lycian ruins peek from the undergrowth, is quintessentially Turkish.

Such potent mixtures of natural splendour and ancient remains result from millennia of eventful history, during which Middle Eastern empires such as the Hittites and the Seljuks establish capitals in Anatolia (Asian Turkey). So many names here are familiar from history lessons and Hollywood blockbusters, from Troy and Ephesus to Gallipoli, where Atatürk repelled Anzac and British forces. Travelling Turkey’s beaches and plains is like turning the pages of a historical thriller, with mosques and medreses, hamams and hans (caravanserais) never far from view.

When it’s time to close the book and seek worldly pleasures, Turkey shines as brightly as its red-and-white fl ag. This is, after all, the land that introduced the world to the kebap (and, less famously, the cherry). Vegetarians, meanwhile, can tuck into meze, ideally consumed on a panoramic terrace with rakı (aniseed spirit) or a tulip-shaped glass of çay (tea). And that’s before you lace up your hiking boots or pull on a dive mask…

OUR TOP PICKS FOR TURKEY1 Istanbul Visit Topkapî Palace, the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofya.

Haggle like mad in the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar. Float along the Bosphorus. And that’s just for starters.

2 Cappadocia Balloon over Cappadocia and admire the extraordinary fairy chimneys, then delve deep to explore the unique underground cities.

3 Selcuk Kick back in the best pensions on the coast, near awesome Ephesus and the site of St John’s tomb.

4 Gallipoli Peninsula Wander through the Anzac battlefi elds, at once poignant and peaceful.

BEST TIME TO TRAVELSpring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit, since the climate will be perfect for sightseeing in Istanbul and on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. It will be cool in central Anatolia, but not unpleasantly so. If your primary drive is for beach-bumming, mid-May to September is perfect for the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, if a little steamy out of the water. The Black Sea coast is best visited between April and September – there will still be rain but not as much of it. Head to eastern Turkey from late June to September.

With the exception of Istanbul, Turkey doesn’t really have a winter tourism season. Most accommodation along the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea and in some parts of Cappadocia is closed from mid-October until late April. These dates are not set in stone and depend on how the season is going. High season is from May to September, and prices are at their peak; many western Mediterranean businesses double their prices during the period.

Originally fi shing boats, these have evolved into sailing yachts with full amenities, and remain a popular way to explore the region. Croatia Overview

CroatiaCroatia’s rare blend of glamour and old-fashioned authenticity make this Europe’s ‘it’ destination, where beaches and sunshine vie for attention with cultural treasures, ancient architecture and time-tested folk traditions.

This country in transition, on the brink between Mitteleuropa and the Mediterranean, offers good news for visitors on all budgets: Croatia is as diverse as its landscapes.

There’s a buzz and undeniable star appeal to Croatia’s coast. You’ll get plenty of glitz and glamour in Dubrovnik and Hvar, where night action and celebrity-spotting, designer cocktail in hand, is de rigueur, and fancy yachts dock in droves. For those wanting peace and quiet, hideaways aplenty wait to be discovered, including remote lighthouse islets, fetching fi shing villages, secluded coves and Robinson Crusoe–style atolls. Families fl ock to the string of safe beaches, and there are activities galore for all ages.

Everyone visits the nearly 2000km-long coastline, with over 1000 islands, but most people skip the unsung beauties of inland Croatia. Enjoy a slice of pristine farmland in one of the rural hotels or ‘agro-tourisms’, roam rugged wilderness or get active – hike, bike, abseil, paraglide, raft and canoe. Zagreb may play second fi ddle to nearby Vienna, but this pocket-sized capital has an attractive cafe life, a brand-new contemporary art museum, ancient attractions and a jam-packed roster of festivals and events.

OUR TOP PICKS FOR CROATIA1 Dubrovnik Get knocked out by Renaissance architecture.

2 Hvar Town The Venetian architecture and vibrant nightlife are what keeps travellers returning to one of Croatia’s most stunning islands.

3 Split Stroll around Diocletian’s Palace, laze on Baovice beach, go shopping and explore the zillion bars .

4 Zadar Discover Zadar’s Roman architecture, great bars and clubs, and a fantastic summer festival.

5 Plitvice Lakes National Park Find peace among tranquil lakes and forest paths, and watch the spectacular crashing of waterfalls.

BEST TIME TO TRAVELAlthough Croatia’s peak season is in July and August, the coast is gorgeous in spring and early autumn: the Adriatic is still too cool for plunging into in April, but it can be good during a warm May, especially in Central and Southern Dalmatia, and in September it is almost guaranteed that the sea’s temperatures will climb up to 23°C!

May and June are great months for most outdoor activities (skiing aside, of course). September is perhaps the best month in Croatia. The sea is warm (the weather too), the crowds are sparse and everything becomes cheaper.

After lunch in the Martuljek Gorge, stroll through meadows dotted with orchids, narcissi and blue gentian as you head back down to Kranjska Gora at the entrance to the Triglav National Park.

Days 3- 4: Kranjska Gora – BovecToday starts with a breathtaking drive up the Vrsic Pass from where your path follows the turquoise crystalline Soca River as it cascades through limestone gorges. There’s a historical trail past the old Austro-Hungarian defences and Italian war memorial offering breathtaking valley views.

Days 7 – 8: Kobarid – BohinjTravel to Bohinj with the choice of two travel options – the easy option is to take a panoramic railway journey with views as far as the Gulf of Venice and follow a circular path around the lake. Or you can take the high mountain path to Mt Globoko for a panoramic picnic overlooking Lake Bohinj shimmering below. Whilst in Bohinj, maybe hire a row boat or swim in its clear azure waters. Project Overview:This conservation project is located at the Bay of Lakonikos which can be found at the southernmost part of mainland Greece, otherwise known as the Peloponnese. Lakonikos is perhaps best known as an important nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean. It was also the fi rst area where collaboration with fi shermen started in order to reduce turtle mortality as a result of their capture in fi shing gear. Volunteers play a key role in the daily routine of this project. Participants will engage in daily morning surveys to record nesting activity and protect turtle nests against predation by mammals and inundation by sea water. Volunteers will also provide conservation information to overseas visitors and the local community.

Having been inhabited since the Neolithic period, the area is rich in history and culture and owing to its location near the River Evrotas the area is also rich in bird life and other fl ora and fauna.

Typical DayEach morning you will wake up as the sun is rising over the mountains, approximately 7:00am, to conduct morning survey. Duties for morning survey generally include patrolling the 5km beach and locating any new turtle tracks and/or nests, recording data and measurements, and installing protective grids around the nests. Morning survey may take anywhere from 1-4 hours, depending on the number of nests that require attention. A kiosk, located on the beach near the camp, is manned by volunteers from 11:00am-8:00pm daily, divided into three 3 hour shifts. Volunteers educate the public about the project. Volunteers also participate in evening public awareness presentations conducted

in campsites along the beach. A couple of times each week a group of volunteers will be required to harvest bamboo which is assembled into bamboo grids used to mark and protect the nests.

Field ConditionsAccommodation is provided within one of the campsites along the beach of Mavrovouni. Project participants live communally in a designated area within the campsite. Basic camping material (tents, mattresses, etc) are provided. Cooking, cleaning, survey, kiosk, and other duties are on a rotating basis and are shared by all volunteers. In addition to the daily work, volunteers enjoy plenty of down-time during the hottest parts of the day.

This program is operated by Global Vision International (GVI), who run responsible volunteering programs in over 40 countries around the world. GVI offers volunteers the chance for a hands-on experience by personally contributing to important conservation initiatives and community projects. Volunteer programs run from one week to 2 years.

Should these costs change it may be necessary to make a surcharge on the price of your holiday which will be advised to you at the time you book. However no surcharge in respect to cost or currency fl uctuations will be made to the arrangements of your holiday once full payment has been received by Adventure World, unless any changes are made to your booking in accordance with these terms and conditions. This price guarantee does not apply to: (i) fares, charges or levies imposed by airlines up until ticketing; or (ii) any taxes, charges or levies imposed by any government or their agencies.

4. AMENDMENTSOne change per booking is permitted free of charge. Each subsequent change will incur a fee of NZD75 per amendment to cover extra administrative and communication costs. In addition, cancellation and/or amendment fees may also be imposed by service providers such as accommodation providers and other service providers depending on the nature of the change. To the extent we are able to do so, we will advise you of all applicable cancellation and/or amendment charges at the time of confi rmation of your booking. Separate conditions apply to air arrangements and are set out in Section 9 of these terms and conditions.

5. LATE BOOKINGSA fee of NZD75 per booking will be levied for bookings made within 10 working days of departure from New Zealand. Any booking request made within 10 working days or within any relevant supplier’s cancellation period cannot be processed until full payment has been received by Adventure World.

6. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS – LAND ARRANGEMENTSIf you decide to cancel your holiday or you are unable to travel Adventure World will refund the amount you have paid less (i) our reasonable costs and (ii) any cancellation fees imposed by other suppliers.

It is likely that other suppliers’ cancellation fees (which we will pass on to you) will be greater when cancellation takes place closer to the departure date. If you notify us of cancellation more than 60 days before departure, then the cancellation charges are likely to only be the loss of your deposit. If you notify us of cancellation less than 60 days before departure, the cancellation charges may be up to 100% of the total booking cost. Regrettably cancellation charges cannot be waived. No refunds are available for unused services after departure from original city.

7. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS – AIR ARRANGEMENTSCancellation fees will apply as required by airlines regulations and will vary dependant upon the type of airfare utilised. Airfare prices and conditions are subject to change or withdrawal without notifi cation until ticketed. Full payment is required before tickets can be issued. Adventure World cannot be held liable for any increases in prices or changes in any airline regulations. Foreign currency airfares and airport taxes may fl uctuate and are subject to the rate of exchange on date of ticket issue. Increases in airport taxes are not the responsibility of Adventure World and can be imposed up to departure. To the extent we are able to do so we will advise you of any increases of which we are aware at the time of confi rmation of your booking.

8. CONSUMER CLAIMSShould you encounter any problems on your holiday it is always better to try and solve it directly with the supplier. If it is not possible to do so and you wish to lodge a complaint please do so in writing within 30 days of completing your Adventure World arrangements.

9. NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR COSTVisas, insurance, excess baggage charges (over applicable airline allowances), extra meals, laundry, drinks, souvenirs, and items of a personal nature are not included in the tour cost. Any pre-paid airfare taxes and surcharges are clearly identifi ed in your booking confi rmation if not included in the tour cost.

10. VARIATIONSConsiderable care has been taken to compile the information in this brochure but circumstances not within Adventure World’s control may necessitate changes in itineraries, accommodation and costs in which case you will be informed as soon as possible. When it is necessary to change a hotel Adventure World reserves the right to substitute accommodation of at least a similar standard.

Adventure World cannot be held responsible for any changes which may occur and reserves the right to increase the price of any travel arrangement up to the date of payment in full (or the date of ticketing in the case of airfares). This includes adjustment for fuel surcharges, airfare increases as well as international exchange rate fl uctuations. To the extent we are able to do so, we will notify you of any applicable change in price prior to you making payment in full.

Adventure World may update these terms and conditions at anytime. Any changes to these terms and conditions made after booking will be advised to you. The current version of terms and conditions will always be found on the website www.adventureworld.co.nz

If as a result of any of these variations either: (i) there is a material increase in the cost of your holiday during the period between confi rmation of your booking and the date on which you pay for your holiday in full; or, (ii) you will suffer a material detriment, then you may cancel your holiday, in which case Adventure World will refund the amount you have paid less any cancellation fees imposed by other suppliers.
