Welcome to Springfield.
We’re thrilled to extend
greetings and invite you
to learn about our community. Whether you
are locating a business here, experiencing our
many attractions and events while visiting or
establishing your home in our community,
we’re happy you’ve chosen to live, work and
play in Greater Springfield –whether it’s for the
day or many years to come.
Once you spend some time in our
community, you’ll see that we’re on our way
to greater things. Downtown Springfield is in
the midst of a major transformation that
has already fostered two hospitals, a

restorations. New businesses are settling in
and entertainment venues, including an indoor
ice arena, are in the works. Locally-owned
restaurants offer fine dining in a friendly,
welcoming atmosphere without the long drive
to neighboring larger cities.
The Springfield area is home to an arts
community normally found in much larger
cities. We’re home to the Springfield
Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Museum
of Art, Clark State Performing Arts Center
and our outdoor Summer Arts Festival, which
celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2011. The
Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts & Conference
Center opened in 2011, giving Springfield the edge
in garnering regional and national conferences.

We are one of only a few communities in
America that can boast a home designed by
Frank Lloyd Wright and a golf course designed
by Donald Ross, who designed some of the
country’s best-loved courses. Our natural
resources, recreation areas and bike trails are
among the finest in the region. Top that off with
a 2,120 acre lake and state park just 10 minutes
from downtown and you’ll see why Greater
Springfield is a great place to call home.
Everywhere you go in our community
you’re bound to run into our greatest asset –
our people. Together we welcome you
and invite you to live, work and play in
Greater Springfield.

If you’re considering Springfield as a potential home for your new or established business, you’re in
good company. Among metropolitan areas of similar size, we rank second in the country when it comes to economic development that results in capital invest-ment, according to Site Selection maga-zine’s March 2012 issue. We’ve ranked in the top five for the past six years. That success comes as no surprise to area business owners. Located on I-70, between I-71 and I-75, Springfield has its own public airport and is situated less than an hour from international airports in Dayton and Columbus. In addition, our

community is less than a day’s drive to nearly 60% of the population of the U.S., making Springfield the ideal location for companies that need to move products quickly and transport key personnel across the country efficiently. And we offer a much better value when it comes to costs for facilities and labor. There are existing facilities for a range of businesses and industries while new construction, especially for technol-ogy-based businesses, is taking place all over Clark County. Skilled labor to staff your company is readily available, thanks to the workforce development partnership between the

Anchored by our beautiful city hall plaza, downtown Springfield has established
itself as a regional destination for entertainment, recreation, history and the arts. Today, it has added state-of-the-art medical centers, new green spaces and downtown offices and convention space to the mix. In the last three years, downtown has seen the completion of the Springfield Regional Medical Center, Ohio Valley
Surgical Center, Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts & Conference Center, National Road Commons, and the renovation of the historic Bushnell Building, which is the new home for Code Blue. New retail, restaurant and office space have followed, including a general store, an arts collective in the historic heritage center, and a children’s specialty boutique. Add to that our first-class performing arts center, historic museums, restaurants, lodging and our

New construction, including a new indoor ice arena is in the works. Early in its history, all roads led to Springfield. Literally. For more than a decade, we were
the final stop on the National Road, which brought thousands of bright, enterprising individuals here and resulted in our community becoming home to their ideas and innovation. From the world-famous Champion reaper to the world’s largest developer of new rose varieties, our community was founded on great ideas. And, we made sure those ideas were safeguarded – Harry Toulmin, the most prominent patent attorney in the early 20th century, had his offices in the beautiful
Bushnell Building located in the heart of downtown Springfield. The Wright Brothers secured seven patents for their flying machine in Toulmin’s office. The architecture in our historic districts, most notably East High Street and South Fountain Avenue, are tangible evidence of the wealth and innovation that are a vital component of our his-tory. Visitors can tour the South Fountain Historic District to view late 19th century homes. East High Street – known as “Millionaires Row” for its opulent Victorian and Queen Anne mansions – was once home to luminaries such as Ohio Governor Asa Bushnell and automotive

industry legend Burton Westcott. Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Westcott House, which is now one of the premier Frank Lloyd Wright house museums in the United States. A $5.8 million restoration in 2005 returned the Westcott House to its original splendor and sealed its status as one of his greatest works. The Pennsylvania House, commonly known as “The Inn at the End of the Pike,” opened in 1839 and provided welcome relief for pioneers heading west on the
National Road. This beautifully restored 24-room house is now open to the public, displaying historical artifacts collected and maintained by The Daughters of the American Revolution. In 2011, the DAR gave its blessing to the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce to move the circa-1928 Madonna of the Trail statue from its long-time home at Springfield’s western edge to a new downtown park, National Road Commons. The statue – one of 12 commissioned by the national DAR
organization in 1927 – honors the courage and sacrifice of the country’s founding mothers. The 12 statues were placed along the National Road from Maryland to California. The beloved statue’s new downtown location is just a block away from the keeper of our community’s history – the Heritage Center of Clark County. Acclaimed as one of the nation’s finest regional museums, the Heritage Center chronicles life in Springfield through some 200,000 artifacts and interactive displays. Just one trip through the museum and you’ll understand why we are passionate about preserving our history as we move our community into the future. The Springfield Preservation Alliance works to preserve our existing architectural resources and raise public appreciation of these treasures through tours, lectures and special programs. Their walking tours are a must for any visitor or resident. Our past still shines through as we move toward a bright future. While we draw on the great ideas from our past, we’re nurturing great ideas from our residents, whether those ideas are in business, the arts or technology. Our innovative spirit is the driving force in the reinvention of our downtown and is helping expand our notion of business. The exquisite collections and beautiful backdrop of the Springfield Museum of Art earned it a prestigious Smithsonian Affiliate designation in 2012, making it the only Smithsonian Affiliate Art Museum in Ohio. With a coveted American artists permanent collection, the museum features Smithsonian and other traveling exhibits - such as the recent “Full Deck” skateboard art exhibit - for art lovers of all ages. In the mid-1850s, a local man invented a harvesting machine that, by virtue of winning so many
competitions at state fairs, became known as “the Champion reaper.” William Whitely’s machine became so popular that Springfield became known as the “Champion City.” Whitely’s design made such a dramatic impact on the industry of farming that a patent model of his machine resides in the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to securing a promising title for our city, Whitely and business partner Jerome Fassler created an agricultural implements operation – The
Champion Company – which grew to become the largest facility of its kind in the world. During the 1880s, the company, which employed more than 2,000 workers, was the world’s largest manufacturer of farm implements. Later, The Champion Company became one of the five companies that merged to become International Harvester. International, now known as Navistar and still a business force in Springfield, has long been a part of our community’s history. The farm machinery business spurred the creation of one of Springfield’s most-famed companies,

Mast to produce Farm & Fireside magazine which promoted his company’s farm implements, Crowell-Collier became the publisher of some of the country’s foremost magazines including Woman’s Home Companion, American Weekly, Collier’s Farm News and Household Journal. In the decades that followed, Springfield residents remained convinced that their hometown was a great place to live. That opinion has been showcased on a national level in the pages of Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. Greater Springfield is known throughout Ohio as the home of many of the state’s finest
festivals and events. From South Vienna’s Corn Festival to Springfield’s CultureFest these family friendly events are a fitting celebration of all the things that make Greater Springfield a special place to live and raise a family. Perhaps our best-known event is the annual Summer Arts Festival, which has been bringing top-quality entertainment to our area for more than four decades. For six weeks, spanning June and July, regional and national artists and acts – including local musical sensations John
Legend and Griffin House – take the stage at the recently-renovated Veterans Park. A lawn chair or blanket is the only admission required. Verdant and historic George Rogers Clark Park is the setting for our nation-ally-recognized festival, The Fair at New Boston. The event, now in its 30th year, attracts families and history buffs from across the country. The fair takes place in a recreated 18th century village, replete with artisan craftspeople, food vendors and entertainers who show off their love and knowledge of a time long ago. You might even do a double-take as you see a George Rogers Clark look-alike ride by on his trusty steed.

After the fair is over, there is no shortage of exciting events held year-round at the Clark County Fairgrounds, home of the regionally acclaimed Champions Center. The venue hosts national horse competitions, national trade shows, regional conferences and events and some of the area’s most beautiful weddings.
The world comes to Springfield in late summer when CultureFest takes over City Hall plaza. Featuring tasty ethnic food, brightly-colored traditional dress and music and dance from all over the world, the annual event celebrates our community’s diversity in a fun and tasty way. During the spring and summer months, the grounds around the Heritage Center are transformed into the site of our outdoor Farmers Market, which showcases a rainbow of Ohio’s best fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses fresh from local farms. Lingering a little longer will provide an opportunity to enjoy the dozens of beautifully crafted items and gifts created by local artisans who also set up shop at the Saturday morning event.
Everybody loves a parade and we are no exception. Springfield’s Memorial Day Parade – the largest in the country – and the New Carlisle Heritage of Flight Festival featuring the Flying Angels Parade of Planes are two of the region’s finest. Witnessing our parades offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the personalities of our cities, townships and villages from spring through winter. Our activity-packed year wraps up with the highlight of the season, Holiday in the City. Held the Saturday after Thanksgiving and attracting some 15,000 people, Holiday in the City features a music-filled parade, fireworks, Santa’s arrival and the lighting of the community Christmas tree. Children of all ages will be wowed as they view vintage store window displays from Lord & Taylor in Manhattan and Marshall Fields in Chicago. A stop at the larger-than-life Santaland in the Heritage Center – Santa’s home for a few weekends before Christmas – will cap off a wonderful family experience. We guarantee being part of our “Holiday” magic will put you in the spirit like nothing else.

A source of pride in our community is the educational opportunities available to
children in grades K-12. You will find this exemplified in the city where, thanks to voters’ support in 2000, all existing buildings were replaced. Springfield City Schools now holds class in its new facilities that include 10 elementary schools, three middle schools, Keifer Alternative School and Springfield High School. Advanced placement offerings at the high school level result in an impressive degree of student success on AP college-placement tests. The district also
offers the well-respected International Baccalaureate program, which brings rigorous college-level instruction into the high school classroom. By implementing the highly successful small school concept, Springfield High School offers students five academies with distinct concentrations: Preparatory Academy, Exploratory Academy, STEM Academy, Health and Human Services Academy and International Arts and Communications Academy. With two technologically advanced hospitals recently opened in
downtown Springfield, it’s no surprise that our universities and colleges offer numerous health-related educational programs. The 100 year-old Community Hospital School of Nursing became part of the Clark State Community College network in 2012. Renamed the Clark State Community College-Springfield Regional School of Nursing, the school offers an accredited, four-semester Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree, an LPN to RN transition program
and a paramedic to RN transition program. The college offers a 10-month LPN program and is developing allied health partnerships with other community colleges for programs such as respiratory therapist and radiology technician. Graduates of Clark State’s nursing program can continue their educations through Cedarville University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or Urbana University’s Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nursing programs. Urbana offers classes at its Urbana and Springfield campuses.

With more than 6,600 acres of park land at your disposal, the
options for outdoor entertainment are seemingly endless. The centerpiece of our outdoor recreational amenities is Buck Creek State Park, a joint effort between the Army Corps of Engineers and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which includes nearly 1,900 acres of land and a 2,120 acre lake – C.J. Brown Dam and Reservoir. The park in-cludes a sand beach and swimming area; walking, bicycling and horseback riding trails; playgrounds; picnic and camping areas; and a full-service marina, making
it a haven for fishermen, bikers, boaters, campers, hikers and runners. Water adventures continue down-stream with canoeing on Buck Creek and white-water kayak sports at the new ECO Sports Corridor. The Buck Creek White-water Project, the idea that gave life to ECO Sports, has developed two sites – at the Springfield Museum of Art and Snyder Park – where thrill-seekers can kayak through the rapids. When completed, the project will feature six miles of waterway fun. If golf is your game, we have some ideal spots. Greater Springfield boasts nine regulation golf courses including the

Springfield Museum of Art, the only Smithsonian Affiliate art museum in Ohio, and hosts our annual Summer Arts Festival at its Turner Pavilion. The park also boasts a playground, hiking trails and amateur bouldering on its scenic cliffs. Reid Park is home to two 18-hole golf courses. The Clark County Parks District includes several local area parks including: George Rogers Clark Park, Hertzler House, Davidson Interpretive Center, Estel Wenrick Wetlands, Little Miami Scenic Trail and Prairie Grass Trail. The mission of the CCPD is to preserve our nature and history through active stewardship of the assets in Springfield and beyond. Spending the day at George Rogers, which is the site of the Hertzler House and is adjacent to the Davidson Interpretive Center, will transport you to another time in history. The Hertzler House is the restored home of Daniel Hertzler, a mid-19th century entrepreneur and land owner. The Davidson Interpretive Center sits on what was a Shawnee Indian settlement and the site of the Battle of Peckuwe, the largest battle of the American Revolution west of the Allegheny Mountains. American Colonel George Rogers Clark attacked the settlement, driving out the Shawnee and creating opportunities for colonial settlers. Clark County rests at the center of 250 miles of biking and recreational trails stretching across five counties, passing over a variety of terrains. The Little Miami Scenic Trail, which connects Springfield to Yellow Springs, is a popular 10-mile trek that leads to John Bryan State Park and the Glen Helen Nature Preserve. Youth recreational opportunities are almost limitless, from organized sports to not-so-organized fun, such as Splash ZoneWaterPark,MitchellAvenueSkatePark or the Family Indoor Ice Arena planned for downtown. Springfield invites you to come out and play.

The golf course at this 110-year-old club was designed by legendary golfer and golf course architect Donald Ross, whose own golf legacy lives on at Pinehurst.
