This leads to extremely high prices for properties and rentals.

New Towns in England More than 30 New Towns were built in England, Scotland and Ireland by the New Town Act since 1945. The aim of New Towns - based on the Garden City Concept of E. Howard – was the relief of the existing cities. In a first period the cities were realized in a size of 35.000 inhabitants intended to Howard´s idea. The concept was modified several times, the number of inhabitants increased and the multi-functionalism was strengthened.

Many New Towns have been built at the fringe of GLMA, e.g. Stevenage (1946) and Harlow (1947). Milton Keynes (1967) is one of the latest New Towns in England with about 250.000 inhabitants.
Recently the British Government announced the plan for a new Garden City at the mouth of the river Thames, called Ebbsfleet.
