Know Your Contractor’s Responsibilities:

To furnish a written contract, detailing all work to be done. Read it carefully!

To be responsible for all phases of the job from start to nish, including scheduling, labor and materials.

To coordinate all work with various subcontractors to avoid costly and unnecessary delays.

To perform all work according to specications, to obtain building permits and arrange required inspections with subcontractors.

To be familiar with building codes and standard construction practices.

To leave the job site clean and free of construction debris upon completion.

Know Your Responsibilities Make sure the contractor has access to your home in order to complete the work on time and on

budget.

Select one person to be the contact with the contractor, to keep informed of the job progress and to answer questions as they arise.

Avoid confusion and do not visit with workers or subcontractors while they are working. They are not responsible for solving problems; the contractor needs to do so. Do not make verbal requests and changes. Make sure you obtain a signe change order, in order to avoid misunderstandings and “surprises” extra charges.

Consider 3 Types of Contractors

Cost PlusThe contractor and homeowner agree on an estimated cost. The homeowner agrees to pay all actual costs of the job plusa fee to the contractor for his services. Although this type of bid is common, the homeowner assumes the risk of cost overruns and of corrections.

TurnkeyThe contractor commits to a xed price for overruns in the original specications. Changes requested during construction are documented and signed by both the contractor and the homeowner. Payment for changes is typically made prior to the change being made.

CombinationIf the homeowner elects to perform part of the work themselves, a combination of Cost Plus and Turnkey may result. The written contract should be clear as to what work and responsibility each party will accept.

A Little NARI History:

NARI”s roots go back to 1935 when President Roosevelt’s National Recovery Act established the beginnings of NERSICA ( e North East Roong, Siding and Installation Contractors Association).

In 1956 President Eisenhower established Operation Home Improvement, a nationwide eort emphasizing the rehabilitation of existing housing rather than new construction. e National Home Improvement Council (N.H.I.C.) emerged from the eort.

By the mid-1960’s, NERSICA no longer reected the membership of growing industry and its name was changed to the National Remodeler’s Association (NRA).

In 1982, the Home Improvement Council, the National Remodeling Association and NERSICA merged to form NARI. e industry continued to grow and the National Remodeler’s Association and the National Home Improvement Council joined to establish the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Today, NARI has 53 chapters nationwide and has enjoyed a sizable growth period during the past decade. In 2000, NARI moved its national headquarters from Alexandria, Virginia, to Des Plaines, Illinois and as the Voice of the Remodeling Industry, continues to prosper.

NARI’s Goals:All remodelers will want to be part of NARI and customers will insist on contracting with our members. We realize this goal through:

Recognition:NARI will be acknowledged as the only association representing the best interest of the remodelers and their clients.

Reputation:NARI members will be recognized by remodeling consumers as leaders of the industry and the professional of choice.

Quality:NARI members will constantly deliver high quality remodeling projects that ensure housing stock is safer, more comfortable and secure.

Advocacy:NARI will be the driving force for sustained success in the remodeling market characterized by a regulatory environment conductive to successful business, properly licensed professionals, safe and secure house & better communities.
