SHOWINGSFolk Art from Oaxaca: Eight Artists, Eight VoicesSaginaw Valley State University’s Marshall M. Frederick’s Sculpture Museum will ex-

hibit a special collection of native Mexican sculptures, beginning Friday, June 23 and run-ning through September 20. Folk Art from Oaxaca: Eight Artists, Eight Voices exhibition

will consist of 50 sculptures, showcasing the work of eight indig-enous Oaxacan artisans: Four potters with ancestral and unique techniques, and three wood carvers, particularly Alebrijes, which are whimsical carvings depicting animals, people, objects, and imaginary creatures painted with intense colors and intricate pat-terns from Oaxaca, Mexico.Mario Castellanos Gonzalez, one of the exhibiting artists, will

travel to Michigan to give workshops at the Museum at SVSU, the Midland Center for The Arts and Creative 360 in Midland, the Sagi-naw Art Museum, and Studio 23 in Bay City. He’ll demonstrate to students how he carves and paints the wood to make his Alebríjes.Alejandra Munuzuri, a resident of Oaxaca, is the exhibition cura-

tor and will travel to the Museum this June to give a lecture on the work of the artists as well as contemporary Oaxacan folk art in general. The history of the Fredericks Museum is as follows: Honey (Dor-othy) Doan Arbury, one of the founders of what is now Saginaw Valley State University, studied under Fredericks at Cranbrook’s Kingswood School in the 1930’s. They reconnected in the 1970’s through her uncle, Alden B. Dow, one of the foremost mid-cen-tury modern architects of the Midland School, whom Fredericks worked with on professional projects. With their ensuing friend-ship, they created a permanent exhibit of Fredericks’s work within SVSU’s Arbury Fine Arts Center. Hence, the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum. Along with The Spirit of Detroit, some of Fredericks’s most well-

known works are the monumental Cleveland War Memorial; The Expanding Universe Fountain at the Department of State Building in Washington, DC; Freedom of the Human Spirit in Flushing Mead-ows, New York; Levi L. Barbour Memorial Fountain on Belle Isle; and Christ on the Cross at the Indian River Catholic Shrine in Indian River, among others. There’s free admission to the Museum and its exhibits. For more

Hartford Memorial Baptist Church Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Hartford Memorial Baptist Church is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with a huge gala celebration on July 7. 100 years of working and help-ing the community flourish, especially the community sur-rounding Hartford Church. Com-munity development is extreme-ly important to Hartford Church. It was the vision and leadership of Rev. Dr. Charles G. Adams, Pastor HMBC that led the Church to purchase the commercial real estate along W. Seven Mile Rd. that now supports a McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Subway and most recently Hartford Vil-lage - a gated senior residential community.

The church continues to rein-vest in the community it serves. The commitment, hard work and dedication of the people and leadership at Hartford has

not gone unnoticed. In May, 2016 Hartford Memorial Baptist Church was proudly designated a Michigan Historical Site by the Michigan Historical Commis-sion with a historical Marker. The Marker, located on the front lawn reads:

The Hartford Memorial con-gregation was the first African American church on Detroit’s west side. It began under Rev. Edgar Edwards (1875 – 1942) As the International, Interracial, In-terdenominational Institutional Baptist Church in 1917. Under its second pastor, the Rev. Charles A. Hill (1893 – 1970). It was in-corporated in 1921 as Hartford Avenue. In 1924, it built a new church at 6300 Hartford where it remained until 1977.

The church through its minis-tries led civil and equal rights efforts to organize Ford Motor Company United Automobile

Workers, prevent the exclusion of blacks from the WW II era So-journer Truth Housing Project, and support the 1986 Dearborn economic boycott.

Throughout Hartford’s long history it has been a beacon for advancement of the community. In its 100 year history, Hartford Church has only had three Pas-tors. Now with more than 5,000 members Hartford has a huge footprint in this community in all areas, but particularly in the area of music. Well known for its music, in the 1940’s Hartford presented some of the world’s most famous singers.

“As an adolescent I was wor-shiping in a newly completed structure where city wide at-tractions were held in the 1940’s, such as the world famed concert tenor, Roland Hayes and multiple appearances of singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson, said Rev. Dr. Charles G. Adams. “With its many choirs — Senior Choir, Ever Ready Chorus, Young People’s Choir, and Ladies Aid Chorus — and outstanding mu-sic directors; Johnnie Reid, Mar-vin Dupree, Dr. Robert Harris, Hartford was becoming the mu-sic mecca among Detroit African American Churches.”

Rev. Adams comments, “When we became Hartford Memorial

Baptist Church in 1977 we con-tinued the tradition of annual Messiah performances now in its 66th year, conducted alter-nately by Brazeal Dennard and Dr. Robert Harris, professor of choral conducting at Northwest-ern University in Illinois. Under the music ministry of Dr. James Abbington, Hartford built the Petty Madden Pipe Organ which was the largest such instrument built in a black church.”

“Hartford was organized in 1917 as Institutional Baptist Church which meant that it was deeply rooted in its com-munity and heavily involved in the daily life of its members”, says Adams. “Along with the message of Salvation through Christ, we preached human dig-nity and rights. Rev. Charles A. Hill changed the name to Hart-ford Baptist Church and he led the fight for fair housing prac-tices and job opportunities. The UAW was organized in Hart-ford church facilities. Both Rev Hill and I were leaders in the NAACP.”

As only the third pastor in 100 years, I’m proud of the profound legacy Hartford Memorial Bap-tist Church has and continues to build throughout the world”, comments Rev. Adams.

Each step of the way Pastor Ad-

ams has been a proud leader and supporter of the community. He has been invited to preach the Eulogy at the funeral services of some of the great leaders of our time; Coleman Young, Rosa Parks and others.

Most recently on May 9, Wayne State University bestowed upon Dr. Adams an honorary Doc-tor of Laws degree at the com-mencement ceremony. Adams was recognized for his contin-ued commitment to the spiritual growth and development of the church and his service to the city of Detroit.

On April 29, 2017 Dr. Adams was presented with the presti-gious Harvard Divinity School Peter J. Gomes Memorial Honors Award at Harvard University. The same award given to Rihan-na this year. Pastor Adams con-tinues to be a respected strong voice for the church in the news media spotlight for many of the significant events that affect the community.

The 100th Anniversary Cel-ebration will be held on Friday, July 7 at Cobo Center at 5 p.m. Special Performance by Award Winning Gospel singer Shirley Caesar.

Tickets are available at Hart-ford Church or by calling (313) 861-1285.

SYMPHONIC NEWS

Ruth's Music Notes...Ruth Crystal-Zaromp

The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival began on June 10. I always wonder if these events match their past standard of excellence, only to find that they are passing that challenge with flying colors. We are being provid-ed with the most top-notch abilities being brought to our attention, which makes for an incredible experience. Saturday’s performance shone with the Calidore string quartet and James Tocco, piano, in Franck’s Pia-no Quintet. This was followed by

Chausson’s song cycle Chan-son Perpetuelle, sung by Lauren Skuce and culmi-nated with the Calidore and Emerson String quartets together performing Men-delssohn’s masterful Octet. Sunday’s performance at Christ Church Grosse Pointe provided for a totally exhila-rating experience through the efforts of the conductor Scott Hanoian and the excep-tional choir and organ. In addition, the Trio Honore

was amazing in its techni-cal and expression abilities. Some of the featured com-posers were not as well-known but the overall expe-rience was inspiring. The coming week (begin-

ning with Thursday, June 15) is going to introduce us to the composers C. Shaw (First Essay Nimrod) and Stone Composer Sean Shepherd (String Quartet No. 2, and Dust). Shepherd is hailed by the NYTimes as “an exciting composer of the new Ameri-can generation”. David Pop-per’s Requiem will be pre-sented at Temple Beth El on Wednesday, June 21, togeth-er with P. Goldstein’s Anthem Quintet for Solo Cello and String Quartet. Leila Josefo-wicz, violinist, will be join-ing the Festival as well as pi-anist Ran Dank. At Seligman on Saturday, June 24, we will be listening to Janacek’s Sex-

tet for Winds Mladi (Youth). Here in Detroit, we haven’t been hearing that much from Janacek’s repertoire, but the Great Lakes Chamber Festival has presented some of his chamber works within the past few years, which are rich in caliber and complete-ly enjoyable. This Friday, June 16 at 8

p.m., the Kerrytown Concert House Minifest will pres-ent: Beethoven’s Piano Trio in G Major (Variations on Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu), Op. 121a with Trio Honoré, Eugene Drucker’s Madness and the Death of Ophelia per-formed by the Omer Quartet (pictured); Lauren Skuce, soprano, Schumann’s Märch-enbilder (Fairy Tale Pictures) performed by Lawrence Dutton viola and Alessio Bax piano, Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78 per-formed by Eugene Drucker, violin and Alessio Bax, piano. The 8 p.m. program on

Friday, June 23 at Kerry-town Concert House pres-ents from The Magic Flute WoO46 by Mozart, Varia-tions in E-flat major on Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen performed by Clive Green-smith cello and Ran Dank piano, commissioned work by Will Healy performed by the Friction Quartet, Sean Shepherd’s Dust (2008) per-formed by Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu violin/viola and Ran Dank piano, Schumann’s Pia-no Quintet in E-flat major Op.

44 performed by the Friction Quartet and Ran Dank piano. On Sunday, June 26 at 2

p.m., at Kerrytown Concert House, the program will in-clude: Stravinsky’s Diverti-mento for violin and piano from Le baiser de la fée per-formed by Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu violin and Ran Dank pia-no, Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 performed by the Omer Quartet, Faure’s Piano Quartet No. 1, in C mi-nor, Op. 15 performed by Trio Honoré and James Van-Valkenburg viola. All of the exciting details of these up-coming events can be found at greatlakeschambermusic.org.For those, who perhaps are

more interested in orches-tral music, the DSO is alive and well these days. This weekend features the Neigh-borhood concerts on Thurs-day (6/15) through Sunday. Program: Boccherini Sym-phony No. 25, Bach Branden-burg Concerto No. 5, Haydn Symphony No. 101. Next weekend (6/22, 6/23, 6/25), the same series features a collaboration between the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival and the Detroit Sym-phony Orchestra, led by con-ductor Paul Watkins. Solo violinist Leila Josefowicz will perform in the Stravin-sky violin concerto. Also in-cluded are Haydn’s Sympho-ny No. 102 and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3. For exact details, check DSO.org.

CINEMA CULTURE

By Paul Arlon

Furiously Fast Animation, Cars 3: Driven to Win

Cars 3, the latest animated Pixar feature is hands down, the best way to see Owen Wilson on the big screen. It’s not a slam against him, really. It’s just my opinion that Wilson’s quirky and distinctive voice is well suited to a cartoon and in this instance I’d rather hear him than see him.

Wilson voices the main character, the legend-ary champion racecar, Lightning McQueen. Now a little bit long in the tooth, McQueen is chal-lenged by a new generation of racers, especially the egotistical Storm Jackson (voiced by Armie Hammer). Jackson shows up out of nowhere, all decked out with the latest racing technology and newest innovations to create faster speeds on the racetrack. He (Storm Jackson, the talk-ing car, that is) immediately takes over the field, besting McQueen in a series of races.

McQueen, dejected and feeling old, is ap-proached by his old Rust-Eze sponsors, who invite him to their new facility – a completely up-to-date high tech training facility designed to make racers faster. When Lightning McQueen gets there, he's introduced to his new sponsor, Sterling (voiced by Nathan Fillion), who, after buying out Rust-Eze has plans to market the valuable Lightning McQueen brand.

Here’s the twist, though. McQueen is saddled with a trainer, Cruz Ramirez (voiced by Cristela Alonzo), a frustrated racer herself, who intro-duces him to the new methods being used by the Storm Jacksons of the circuit. Not accustomed to such a training regimen, McQueen has lim-ited success in the confines of the new-fangled facility and soon faces an ultimatum – win his

next race, or face retirement. Not willing to give up his passion, Lightning McQueen leaves Ster-ling’s training facility, and with the tag-along accompaniment of Cruz, begins to train on his own.

It’s not long until Lightning realizes that he must get back to his beginnings, see his old friends, Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) and the rest of his clubby pals, and finally, re-visit the original source of his love for racing – his mentor Doc Hudson (voiced by the late Paul Newman). Or, because Doc is gone, at least get as close to him as is possible now, by visiting with Doc’s remaining circle of friends, including the old-timer, Smokey (voiced by Chris Cooper).

Smokey and Doc’s old friends work with Mc-Queen and now Cruz as well, to help him gear up for his all-important next race, which will de-cide his future in racing.

Now, keep in mind, these are anthropomorphic beings, these living, talking cars. But what Pixar, Disney, main director Brian Fee and a half dozen writers have done with this fantastically ani-mated feature is to imbue this story with some resounding incite into human motivation. Light-ning’s passionate drive to succeed, his struggle to overcome his limitations with hard work, and finally, his generosity in helping another suc-ceed in his place, and the satisfaction that genu-inely sincere altruism can bring to one’s own sense of pride, is a very worthy storyline.

Pixar and Disney have come up with another valuable entry in feature films. It’s worth see-ing. And, just because Cars 3 is a cartoon, that doesn’t make it less human.

'Watermark' documentary at Detroit Film TheatreThe DIA's Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) will show the award-

winning documentary Watermark, a global perspective on mankind's relationship with water. The movie by filmmak-ers Jennifer Baichwal and Nick dePencier, and renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky, screens Friday, June 23 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 24 at 4 p.m.Claude Baillargeon, an OU Assoc. will introduce Friday's screening, which will also have a Skype Q & A with the film's image researcher, Jim Panou and China crew producer Noah Weinzweig. Visually stunning photography shot in Ultra HD video

shows massive floating abalone farms off China's Fujian coast and the construction site of its Xiluodu dam, the big-gest arch dam in the world; the barren desert delta where the mighty Colorado River no longer reaches the ocean; and the water-intensive leather tanneries of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Watermark shows the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, CA to India's Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, where 30 million people gather for a simultaneous bath in the Ganges; scien-tists who drill ice cores into the Greenland Ice Sheet, and the pristine watershed of northern British Columbia.Admission is free. Palmer Park's Annual Log Cabin Day CelebrationO n e o f D e t ro i t ’ s m o s t

beautiful parks, Palmer Park, will hold its annual Log Cabin Day on Sunday, June 25, from 1-5 p.m. This is a once-a-year opportunity for Greater Detroiters to tour the park’s 132 - year-old log cabin for free – the only authentic log cabin in the city of Detroit. Guided by actors dressed in period costumes, visitors will see stained glass windows, stone fireplaces, an original kitchen with a wood-burning stove, and other unique architectural features. The cabin was designed by George Mason, who also designed the Masonic Temple, and Zachariah Rice, who, with Mason, designed the Detroit Yacht Club and the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

Other activities include an ice cream social (free ice cream from Guernsey Farms Dairy for

the first 500); live music with the Chelsea House Orchestra youth fiddlers; square dancing; traditional blacksmithing and spinning demos; an exhibit of African American quilts from artists at Detroit Unity Temple and Gee's Bend, Alabama; a Civil War camp with the 102nd USCT Black History group; historians and actors in period attire and hat & bonnet-making with a parade and contest for children.

On Saturday, June 24, PFPP will present two concerts in the historic cabin to celebrate and preview the work to restore the cabin. Jazz, Blues and Motown, a musical journey from the late 1800's to the present will feature widely-recorded, world renowned jazz musicians A. Spencer Barefield (guitarist), Shahida Nurullah (vocalist) and Ibrahim Jones (bassist). The shows are from

4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Both events will include a tour of the cabin along with a reception with wine and refreshments. Tickets are $50-$60 for the

concerts, otherwise Log Cabin Day events are free to the public.

Fo r t i c k e t s a n d m o r e information, go online to

peopleforpalmerpark.org. Palmer Park is located just west of Woodward Ave. between 6 and 7 Mile Roads in Detroit.

Detroit's Only Authentic Log Cabin will be Open During the Celebration
